“Goddess of the Sea” is my first foray into P.C. Cast’s ‘Goddess Summoning’ series about normal women transformed by their willingness to believe in the spark of the Feminine Devine that makes all women magical! But the series is not about witchcraft and crones and spells and such, rather it celebrates the female viewpoint and the joys to be found in the care of tending of beauty in whatever form it’s found, whether it’s nature, art, or humanity.

CC is an Air Force Sergeant who’s afraid of flying and not too fond of water either! So when the C-130 aircraft taking her to Saudi Arabia crashes in the Mediterranean, she’s terrified. She becomes entangled with the sinking plane and is sure she’s about to die. Then she’s rescued by--a mermaid? And the mermaid is asking whether or not she wants to live...well, duh?! Suddenly she’s trapped in the body of the mermaid and there’s a merman after her and another merman who’s really hot and…oh wait, you guys need to read the book to get the rest of the story.

Cast’s story is an enchanting mix of fairy tale, drama, magic, love, and discovery. I probably read WAY more into this tale, but here’s a few things I took away from this book.
-No matter what kinds of physical/physiological changes occur, we’ll still be the same inside.
-There’s no ‘magic bullet’ to solve problems, it takes a combination of innovative thought and the will to try new things and maybe even look silly doing so!
-Not even a whole group of men is a match for one determined woman ***big grin***.
-Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder and what’s inside will never fade or wither (stole part of that phrase from the Bible).
-We are always stronger when we lean on our friends.
-Love is worth sacrificing for. Sometimes the sorrow of love lost seems unbearable, but there’s no telling what’s around the next corner.
I could go on, but I think these were the ‘biggies’.

It’s obvious that Cast has done her homework regarding the USAF. As a proud veteran, I appreciated her attention to the terminology, names, and places that give this story it’s ‘real’ contemporary feeling. I also appreciated that the heroine is enlisted, yet still a strong, feminine woman with ethics and morals. The threads of this tale were woven together skillfully and it was a very smooth read. Although the romance and passion were fairly quick, it was necessary to the author’s plot and this is a kind of fairy tale! And speaking of passion, if you’ve ever wondered how merpeople ‘do it’, you’ve really got to read this one. She did a grand job of depicting sensual lovemaking with legs AND fins!

“Goddess” of the Sea” is a love story. It also imparts a message of feminine empowerment and strength without denigrating the male gender and that’s not so easily done. P.C. Cast has penned a tale that will entertain you. It will also make you laugh and make you cry…but end with a smile on your face.(less)

As primeiras 40 páginas foram de um profundo e completo disparate.
Ao lê-las só pensava para comigo - mas o que é isto?
Está bem que este dito disparate advém muito do facto da personagem principal se embebedar.

Mas havia melhor forma de escrever isto.

Mas quando cheguei à página 172, não pude deixar de pensar que muitas vezes se desiste por causa de umas primeiras páginas desastrosas e se perde um bom livro. Porque agora começa a coisa a aquecer e a tornar-se deveras interessante!

Semplicità…questo è il tuo nome!
…e anche banalità?!
Non è da me dirlo, dato che sono anni che leggo romance e ogni volta che leggo in un commento “Ah, è un harmony!” mi irrito particolarmente. Ma stavolta non posso esimermi dal dirlo io (e penso a giusta causa) che questo romanzo è un vero harmony nella peggiore accezione del termine.
Storia che potrebbe (e avrebbe) buoni spunti e possibilità per essere carina e originale, ma che mi scade nel banale e sciocco.

Ogni volta che un libro non mi piace io mi fermo prima ancora della metà, se non proprio le prima 150 pagine. Massimo.
Ecco, questo libro non mi è piaciuto.
Per carità, io adoro i libri sulle sirene, e mi piacciono sempre, dico sempre quando le sirene sono un po' arroganti, diciamolo. Aò, mi sa che sono rimasta alle sirene cattive di non so quale film.. Peter Pan, forse?

Yeesh. You don't have to beat me over the head with a stick. I get it. Women are divine, we are all goddesses, we rule and woe to the man who thinks otherwise. According to the synopsis on the back of the book I had assumed that the knight in shining armor was going to be a dream come true, not the nightmare from hell. Ugh.

There actually wasn't a whole lot of romance in this book, it was mostly all about woman power and the mystical bonds of sisterhood and the age old fight of church vs females. Modern woman and men from the Dark Ages were never meant to interact and this book set my teeth on edge when they are forced to do so.

Christine is alright. I didn't care for her very much. I understand the pull the sea held over her but her constant escape attempts to go see Dylan kept getting her in trouble and that reckless disregard annoyed me. Plus in the beginning of the story she was celebrating her birthday with buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken which she chased with champagne. That's a gross combination and I can't respect someone who would do that. What saved the book for me was Dylan. He was a shining beacon amidst this dreary story and I loved him. When his fate unfolded, I felt like screaming. I know I said that I enjoyed the ending from P.C. Cast's Goddess of Light, but this ending sucked. He was the best thing in this book and he didn't deserve what he got. It will all work out in the end of course but I hate that kind of deux ex machina cop-out. Even though it's still him at the end, it didn't feel like it. This was definitely not my favorite of P.C. Cast's Goddess Summoning books, but this was still an imaginative read. (less)

Ahimé, non è andata così!
Christine Canady è una ragazza venticinquenne arruolata nell’Aeronautica Militare Americana che, dopo un compleanno festeggiato in solitudine all’insegna di champagne, pollo fritto ed un’invocazione alla dea Gea pronunciata sotto l’influsso dell’alcol, scambia la sua vita con la sirena Ondina. E non solo, si ritrova nel Medioevo!
Ovviamente capisce fin da subito che la vita nella quale si è ritrovata non è così semplice, anzi, fin dall’inizio si ritrova ad affrontare un fratellastro deciso ad averla in sposa con qualsiasi mezzo. E per fuggire da lui si ritroverà in altri guai, dovuti soprattutto ad un abate alquanto sospettoso nei confronti delle donne e della bellezza. In mezzo a tutto questo trova il tempo per innamorarsi di un bel tritone, Dylan, che a differenza di Sarpedonte (il fratellastro sopracitato), è gentile e molto sexy.
Secondo me, c’erano tutte le premesse perché fosse una bella storia, magia, creature affascinanti come le sirene e amore. Purtroppo l’autrice si è persa per strada e non ha sviluppato al meglio gli elementi presentati.
Uno dei punti dolenti è proprio Christine. È una ragazza forte, ma allo stesso tempo poco sicura di sé (è convinta che il suo vecchio corpo non fosse attraente, mentre si sono avuti molti indizi che in realtà è solo una sua percezione); nel corso della storia matura, c’è un certo sviluppo nel suo personaggio, ma il problema di fondo è che dovrebbe avere venticinque anni, ma molto spesso ne dimostra quindici; soprattutto per certe sue reazioni ed atteggiamenti.
E poi l’innamoramento fra lei e Dylan…un colpo di fulmine! Più veloce della luce! Si vedono ed è amore. E ci sarebbe anche potuto stare, se non fosse che lui era innamorato di Ondina, quella vera, e si accorge parlando due secondi con Christine che lei è diversa e che gli piace di più dell’originale. Una cosa del genere non può capitare così velocemente, devono avere il tempo di interagire in modo più profondo…e invece la seconda volta che si incontrano già si dichiarano amore eterno (o almeno lui lo fa) e si saltano addosso.
Questi sono solo i punti salienti che mi hanno indispettito, ma ci sono altre sbavature e incongruenze che hanno ridotto il piacere della lettura. Il finale in particolare mi ha un po’ deluso, mi aspettavo una soluzione diversa, ma non voglio andare nello specifico per evitare spoiler (che detesto!).
Per fortuna è un libro che mi hanno prestato, altrimenti avrei avuto qualche problema a superare questi difetti. Stando così le cose, credo sia un libro carino, una lettura piacevole, senza infamia né lode. Da consigliare soprattutto a chi ama vedere uniti in una stessa storia magia, déi e anche il viaggio nel tempo.

This is the second time I am reading this book and I came away as unimpressed as the time I first read it. It is a shame because I rather liked the Goddess Summoning series as a whole.

As far as the romance goes, Christine and Dylan's relationship left me cold. There was a lack of chemistry in their interactions. That the sinister plot in the story was more interesting than the romance between the two lead characters is a sad testament to how much this romance book has failed in its primary goal....more

I totally loved "Goddess of Love" and "Goddess of Troy" and now understood why in Germany "Goddess of Love" wasn't published as the first book in the series like it originally is. This book was so boring. Meine Meinung: "Göttin der Liebe" hat mir richtig gut gefallen, bei "Göttin des Meeres" hat mich der nette Klapptext allerdings etwas getäuscht.

Ja, hier wird die typische Meerjungfrauengeschichte nacherzählt, gemischt mit allen möglichen Legenden zu Meerjungfrauen und der griechischen Mythologie. An sich eine schöne Idee, aber: die Handlung spielt zu Beginn und zum Ende in unserer normalen Welt. Doch nach Christines Unfall und dem Körpertausch ist sie in einer mythischen Welt, die dem Mittelalter gleicht. Genau das war der Knackpunkt in der Geschichte, der mir überhaupt nicht gefallen hat. Dort war alles sehr klischee- und typenhaft dargestellt und mir fehlte der Witz und die Spritzigkeit des ersten Bandes. Damit war für mich auch klar, weshalb "Göttin der Liebe", was eigentlich Band 5 der Reihe ist, bei uns als Band 1 veröffentlich wurde. "Göttin des Meeres" ist eigentlich Band 1, aber als erster Band hätte er wohl nicht funktioniert, da er im Vergleich mit "Göttin der Liebe" langweilig und weniger lustig ist.

Zu den Charakteren kann ich nicht viel sagen, da sie hier für mich alle Typen vertreten: es gibt die gute Heldin, den guten Helden, den Bösewicht, die Götter und ein paar weitere zwielichtige Gestalten. Keine Figur hat mich irgendwie sonderlich berührt oder mich dazu gebracht, mehr über sie erfahren zu wollen.

Auch die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Christine und Dylan lässt zu wünschen übrig, da die beiden Charaktere eher wenig miteinander zu tun haben. Außerdem empfand ich die Sexszenen zwischen Meermann und Menschenfrau oder auch zwischen den beiden Meerwesen etwas seltsam bzw. konnte mir die Sache auch nicht so richtig vorstellen. Ich musste die ganze Zeit an Fische denken und daher war es weder romantisch, noch irgendwie erotisch für mich.

Dieser Band hat für mich auf der ganzen Linie versagt und ich wurde weder gut unterhalten, noch habe ich eine romantische Liebesgeschichte zu lesen bekommen. Der Witz hat ebenfalls gefehlt und ich habe die Handlung als zäh und langweilig empfunden. Schade, denn Band 1 hat viel mehr überzeugt.

Comunque, con "Il diario segreto delle sirene" non avevo grosse aspettative e invece sono rimasta davvero mooolto sorpresa perchè il libro è bellissimo. Certo, certe parti sono state un pò forzate e ripetitive, ma vale la pena leggerlo. Mi sono divertita tantissimo. Ho amato la storia d'amore tra CC e Dylan. Non vedo l'ora di leggere il seguito. Spero venga pubblicato al più presto.

La storia è davvero originale. CC, ovvero Christine Canady è un sergente dell'Aeronautica. Dopo aver festeggiato il suo venticinquesimo compleanno completamente da sola e dopo essersi ubriacata decide di fare un rito, invocando la Grande Madre, per chiedere un pò di magia nella sua vita. E che magia!! (dovrei provarci anch'io!!! O.O))

CC deve partire per un'incarico in Arabia Saudita, ma sfortunatamente l'aereo precipita in mare. CC sta per morire e di certo non si aspetta di essere salvata da una sirena di nome Ondina. Le due ragazze di scambiano i corpi e mentre la vera Ondina torna in superficie, la nostra eroina si ritroverà nel Medioevo nel corpo della figlia di Lir, il dio del mare. Il primo incontro con un suo simile è stato davvero spiacevole. Il tritone Sarpedonte, nonchè suo fratello, che ha cercato di stuprarla. Per salvarsi Gea, la Grande Madre, le darà esilio, due gambe e la possibilità di restare umana per il resto dell'eternità se trova il vero amore. E nonostante l'affascinante cavaliere Andreas che le salva la vita sarà davvero inaspettato vedere la nostra eroina innamorarsi piano piano di un altro tritone, Dylan. Che carino!!!!!!

Ogni tre giorni CC deve trasformarsi in sirena per non morire ed è così che, non riuscendo più a staccare gli occhi dalle pagine, leggerete di come CC e Dylan diventano intimi e iniziano ad amarsi.

La vita di CC è ancora in pericolo e finchè non si risolve il problema di Sarpedonte non può raggiungere l'amato in mare e vivere per sempre con lui. Anche sulla terra però non è al sicuro. Il tritone maniaco riesce, nonostante il potere di Gea, ad impadronirsi del corpo di Andreas.

Preparatevi quindi per un'avventura bellissima tra segreti, tentazioni, divinità, pericolo e molto romanticismo. In poche parole una moderna favola romantica.

Come vi stavo dicendo all'inizio non avrei mai pensato di consigliare un libro di questa scrittrice e invece eccomi qui. Il libro è davvero carino e vi farà vivere esperienze uniche.

Il prezzo è davvero conveniente. Non potete perdere questa occasione. Appena riesco a mettere un pò di soldi da parte lo comprerò sicuramente.

Now in fairness this book had it's good parts. I liked the use of mythology/fairy tale that made the story seem familiar and comfortable. I liked a lot of the descriptive ideas, like the scene where she actually becomes a mermaid--very well written. The setting was fairly intriguing, all though the time travel portion of it was somewhat pointless. The romance was passable. And from what I could tell, there are some interesting plot twists thrown in to keep things fresh.

My issues with this book are many. The humor is at best awkward and clumsy. It's never fully committed to. The opening scene of the book has the heroine talking to herself and pathetically drinking alone. At the same time we are supposed to believe that she's a smart professional member of the United States Air Force. I guess my problem with her character and this part of the premise is that I wanted to like her, but she's inconsistently written. I think that the author either need to commit to making a humorous slightly ditzy character, or a smart well put together one. Or give us some background to justify the lack of consistency. This problem carries over into the actual story as well. Half of the time the effort is made to give good logical reasons for things, and half of the time no explanation is given at all. The other major issues is that the characters are, for the most part, flat and underdeveloped. An effort is made to show that CC has a meaningful change in her worldview and character...but thats about it, everyone else is fairly static. Overall the writing is rough. 2 stars. (less)

CC was a sergeant in the USAF, despite her fear of flying (first off why would she choose a career which would definitely involve some flying even though she was petrified of it?! I certainly wouldn't!). On flying to a new position, her plane crashed in the middle of the ocean and just as she's pulled under the water, a mermaid appears and asks if she wants to swap bodies in order to live and CC readily accepts. She is quickly transported through time and space to Medieval Wales, where things are nowhere near her modern life.

CC's first encounter as a mermaid is to avoid being raped by Sarpedon, a fierce, defiant merman, who is half brother to Undine, the mermaid CC has become. She manages to get away and as she swims to a little cove on the beach, she meets Gaea, the Goddess of the Earth, who helps and watches over her. She is rescued in the sea by Dylan, a lovely caring merman. She is further rescued on land by Sir Andras, who I really didn't like, but then he was the male chauvinistic pig that men of that time were supposed be.

CC has to pretend to be a princess with memory loss in order to avoid the questions of who she is whilst staying at the monastery on the island on which she was washed up. The abbot believes she is a sorceress and she has to calm her opinionated mouth, so as not to appear too strange for the time. Women in that day and age were still considered the property of her husband and once the idea of who she is is planted in Sir Andras' mind, he decides she is worth marrying for the money. CC, however, has other plans!

She spends a lot of time with Dylan and soon love blossoms between them, but she still has to cope with Sir Andras' attempts to woo her and Sarpedon's possession of Andras in order to find her.

I really enjoyed the character of Undine/CC. As a modern woman she is used to standing up for herself and men respecting her, but in this world of Medieval Wales, that is a hard thing to do without being burned at the stake. I loved Dylan's love for her and how he stuck to his words - he really did wait for her for eternity. And I thought the ending was brilliant - I certainly wasn't expecting Dylan to appear again.

This was a fun, light read and I enjoyed the writing style. It is a fairytale, but has some strong messages in it as well. Women are strong characters and that beauty comes from within are the main ideas.

I initially read this book for my character A-Z challenge in the group I am I, but I will be hunting out the rest of this series.(less)

В плане того, что аудиторией данной работы будут девушки (а мы все, практически, выросли на "Русалочке" и других диснеевских мультиках) - многоуважаемые дамы не спешите делать поспешное решение - это настоящая несуразица (да что я несу, полнейшей чуши не читала давненько). Почему в нашей стране печатают подобное? Надо другое продвигать!
Просто хочется пояснить одно: тратится не стоит, поскольку вы совершите ужасную ошибку, правда Вы вполне можете поступить иначе, меня же за язык не тянут и я попросту высказываю свое личное мнение.
Почему спросите Вы?
Идея сама по себе имеет продвижение и реальное существование, если бы автор ВСЕ не испортил. Это, как говорят, бездна вкуса. Я впервые взяла в руки книгу этого автора и была разгромлена. Фактически, я была побеждена, и Каст смело может войти в завоеванный "городок" - эта женщина покорила предыдущие ступени САМЫХ неудачливых романов на моей книжной полке.
В первую минуту даже прощаешь скучный телефонный разговор, описанный на первых страницах "шедевра": для подросткового любовного романчика сошло на три с плюсом.
Теперь хочу прерваться на небольшое лирическое отступление: нас в детстве всех интересовал вопрос (рано или поздно такие вопросы возникают у всех, но в данном случае он возникнет сам собой): "А как на свет появляются другие русалочки?". Кругленькое милое, слегка раскрасневшимся лицо с кожей, как у фарфоровой куклы, с и со смеющимися глазами. Наверное, в детстве мы выглядели бы примерно так.
В данной работе не обошлось без толики эротики, чего и следовало ожидать.
Быть может, я не там читала, потому что история само по себе скучна и не актуальна, но подобная сцена просто стала интересной. В конце главы пошли описания в стиле: "... он задвигался в ней сильнее, толчки продолжались...". Но вопрос так и остался нераскрытым: чем толкался и куда? (Просто в тот момент оба персонажа были русалками. Простите не так, русалкой и тритоном).
Вот уже из-за этого умный человек придет в легкий ступор.
Из-за чего можно купить данную работу:
1. Если это Ваш любимый автор, и Вы хотите добавить его новый роман к себе в коллекцию.
2. Просто хотите потратить деньги.
3. Хотите посмеяться от всей души и поднять себе настроение.
Глупые причины, но других, увы, я не нашла. Мне показалась эта покупка заманчивой, к тому же я давненько не читала стиль "темной тематике", которая сейчас жуть как популярна. Оказалось так: полнейшее разочарование.
Больше поставить не могу, просто не за что. Хотя у каждого свои вкусы, так что решать Вам.(less)

To view it, click here. rating romance is difficult for me. they aren't literary and they're not meant to be. so, i try to think of them on a separate scale. like if you gave the same test to a third-grader and a sixth-grader, you'd have to skew the grading curve in consideration of their academic differences. with that in mind, i still can't rate this book very high. i won't sit here and pretend i rarely read romance novels- sure i do. and some of them are pretty entertaining. this book, i felt, was a bit of a mess. l...more rating romance is difficult for me. they aren't literary and they're not meant to be. so, i try to think of them on a separate scale. like if you gave the same test to a third-grader and a sixth-grader, you'd have to skew the grading curve in consideration of their academic differences. with that in mind, i still can't rate this book very high. i won't sit here and pretend i rarely read romance novels- sure i do. and some of them are pretty entertaining. this book, i felt, was a bit of a mess. lonely, lackluster CC casts an intoxicated spell to bring magic into her life. then, as she's flying to the base where she's serving (as an air force sergeant), the plane goes down. she sinks into the water, about to drown, when she's saved by a mermaid. she and the mermaid switch bodies, yadda yadda yadda, and then it turns out that the switch jettisons CC through time to the year 1014. naturally. only, within minutes of being a mermaid, she gets spooked by an attempted mer-rape and asks to be made human by Gaia. Now she's human again, but in the mermaid's body, and has to deal with life as a woman in the dark ages. of course, it sucks because all men in the dark ages are unrelenting chauvinists who almost immediately condemn her as a witch. you know, that's just how things work. she needs to find true love to stay human and avoid her would-be mer-rapist. until such time, she must revert to her mermaid form once every three nights because... well, because she couldn't otherwise fall in love with the kind merman. mer-sex (and mer/human-sex) ensues, divine interventions are aplenty, girl power, blah blah blah.

a lot of that business seemed completely unnecessary to me. why frame the novel in the mundane present day? or have the body swap at all? you never get to know what happens to the mermaid who takes on CC's form, so what's the point? why not make CC a mermaid from the very start? meh. then there's an issue of how the author very quickly and quite often shifts perspective. you've got dylan (the mer-lover) and CC in a room, and one paragraph explains things from CC's POV, then the next paragraph is Dylan, etc etc. just pick one and stick with it. or divide it by chapters, not paragraph to paragraph. and one more thing- i am sick and tired of some of these tropes. the irresistible woman, desired by every man. the attempted rapes, the oppressive male, chauvinistic society. it seems to me this book shifted eras only to create an easy and obvious chauvinism for CC to rail against. cliiiiche.

needless to say, not a favorite within the genre, though it doesn't commit any crimes more heinous than many of its peers.(less)

Oh. This really took my breath away. I wasn't anything spectacular from P.C. Cast, since House of Night let me down. But this book was so heartbreakingly quaint, beautiful, and wonderful. IT WAS SO FUCKING HEARTBREAKING. I THOUGHT I WAS LET DOWN AT THE END. :C

What I loved the most was Dylan and CC.
HOLY SHIT. HOLY SHIT. OK. Their true love was described A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER THAN THAT OF LIKE TWILIGHT OR SOME SHIT LIKE THAT. Not saying Twilight is shit.

CC has to return to the sea every three nights to give her body to the sea. She is a sea creature and requires this to survive.
CC meets Dylan a merman in the sea, the sea that she is fleeing. Dylan and CC have a very sweet love story. He wants her, has always wanted her and will always want her. They do not care that they are vastly different creatures. They are willing to go to any length to be together. There is a very sweet love story in this book. This is a love story that overcomes the unbelievable. The solution for them to be together is not as simple as CC returning to the sea. Her brother Sarpedon is the Sea Gods son. He has decided to claim her has his. Dylan knows that he cannot protect her from this no matter how much he wishes. The biggest hurdle that they must overcome so they may be together does not have an easily solution.
I almost didn’t finish this book. Around the 100 page area I did something I have never done before. I skipped to the last 5 pages to see where the book was going. My interest was piqued enough to finish reading the book. I was very curious how the book I was reading got to that point. I recommend that anyone with any military knowledge skip reading this book. I was annoyed most by the female who is scared of flying in planes choosing a career in the Air Force, but there were other military issues that had me losing interest in the book. Pre-mer CC is an enormous contradiction that will make you want to scream. The first description of a mer-penis is extremely creepy, but I guess having a lower body that is a tail it had to come from somewhere. It was still very creepy though.

The entire first chapter was flimsy and ridiculous. Seriously - we open with her coming home, checking her messages, commenting out loud about her parents' flirting on the said messages, then ranting at the phone, out loud, as if she were holding a conversation with her mother - something about cookies and whine whine whine and "I can't believe you forgot!" blah blah. This goes on and on, from her talking to the phone, to her bottle of champagne, to the television (not the program on the television, but the static on the screen because the cable's out), to her bucket of KFC, and then I don't remember what else. I honestly almost couldn't get past just that. But then it gets worse, when she decides, after watching The Witches of Eastwicke, that she "needs magic in her life." So just like that, with no backstory to tell us why this would suddenly and randomly 'inspire' a person to do so, she rifles through her old college textbooks to find a book on goddesses. Talking out loud at the textbooks the whole time, mind you. And then she reads out loud, these passages about the goddess Gaea or Gaia, and finds a magical ritual in said textbook, and gets all funky on her apartment balcony to "summon magic" into her life. There was so much about this that didn't work right off the bat - it's not a preset paranormal world that's introduced to the reader, here. Yet we're supposed to believe this mundane, USAF Sergeant Canady just randomly gets drunk and brings the goddess Gaia to her.

But, hey, I picked up this book because one of the later books in the series had caught my eye and I figured I'd start at the beginning to give it a shot. I loved the premise of this series, so why not? There were a ton of positive reviews for it, and sometimes I'm just a masochist when it comes to books, so I kept reading.

And really, it didn't turn out to be that terrible. My 2-star rating is a "gentle" 2 stars. Maybe like, a 2.8 stars. It was fairly readable, once I got past CC's apparent affinity for the sound of her own voice. Yes, there was much to dislike, even beyond CC's yammering and self-narrating: there were a ton of cliches, and I found myself pretty damned irritated by the whole concept of (the original) Undine's bait-and-switch which was just handwaved, really. And the "romance" in this story was one of those kind of ridiculous, lightning-fast, "it was already foreshadowed as twoo luv because there was a dream!" relationships. And the ending - OMG the WEAK-assed ending where everything bad is just magically undone "tah-dah!" And there was too much telling and not enough showing, especially with the "girl power! women are goddesses!" messages that were pounded out in plain black and white speeches amongst characters in the freakin dark ages. Not to mention, the writing itself was frankly sophomoric, not very well-edited for being a 'published work,' and no better than some of the self-published or small-published books I've read.

SO. While there was all this stuff working AGAINST this story, it was still colorful and shiny and Gaia is awesome and Lir's pretty cool, and oooooh DOLPHINS! and the mer-sex was kind of hot too, so I DID manage to make it to the end without wanting to throw it against a wall. Would I recommend it to a friend to read? Maybe if there wasn't anything else to read, or if their only other option was like, Twilight, or something. Will I read the next in the series? You know what? Strangely enough, I very well might. Unless someone has a rec for me that's along the same vein as these books but, you know - better.(less)

Logo no início não fiquei com boa impressão do livro. CC pareceu-me uma personagem muito mal construída, e ver uma mulher de vinte e cinco anos, independente e com carreira militar a agir, falar e comportar-se como uma rapariga no início da sua adolescência – coisa que não se de deveu à bebed...more Talvez seja de interesse saber que, mitologicamente falando, o masculino de “sereia” é “tritão”, sendo que a palavra “sereio” não existe – ou não existia. A escrita também não é algo brilhante, mas isto seriam factores com os quais eu poderia bem… Não fosse a junção de tudo o resto.
1014 (salvo erro… Não posso garantir, mas será por essa altura) é o ano que a autora escolhe para situar a sua história. Algo de muito bonito, não fosse o facto de P.C. Cast não saber nada de nada sobre a época escolhida por ela própria e, pior do que isso, transmitir uma clara impressão de que não está particularmente interessada em o saber – algo nada louvável, quando se escolheu desenvolver um enredo no dito cujo.
Também não me pareceu particularmente conhecedora da religião cristã. O interesse é meramente utilizar os seus seguidores como maus da fita e ficamo-nos por aí. Já a mitologia… Os deuses mencionados são apenas Gaia e Poseidon (chamado de “Lyr” porque o livro diz ser uma das suas denominações e como eu não tenho o conhecimento para contrariar ou confirmar nada digo) e deixando o modo como foram caracterizados de lado (gosto pessoal), pareceram-me minimamente fidedignos.
Por fim, em relação ao enredo, é possível resumi-lo do seguinte modo: devido a um acidente de avião no mar em que CC se sente muito culpada por um soldado-todo-bom-interessado-nela-e-muito-simpático ter morrido no seu lugar (ele propôs trocarem de assento no início do voo porque ela estava claramente a rasgar os lábios com o pânico, e acabou com uma hélice a rebentar-lhe a cabeça), uma sereia resolve interferir na iminente morte por afogamento de CC, propondo-lhe uma troca de corpo e vidas, o que CC compreensivelmente aceita.
A partir daí, e porque a vida de Ondina (a sereia com a qual CC trocou de corpo) estava um bocadinho problemática devido a um irmão que a queria muito (mas mesmo muito) violar, Gaia, que tinha tudo debaixo de olho desde o início, a esperta, dá-lhe pernas e a possibilidade de viver em terra (no tal ano medieval e não na sua época actual), longe do irmão-tritão violador, mas com a condição de ir ao mar e transformar-se em sereia de três em três noites (caso não faça, é provável que morra). Ondina/CC acaba num mosteiro, e a partir daqui, temos um número muito avantajado de páginas que rodam, continuamente, em torno disto: a) CC a trocar palavras venenosas com o abade, de onde sai naturalmente vitoriosa; b) CC a fugir dos avanços do cavaleiro galante que a “salvou” de se afogar e a resgatou para terra, sendo que o desgraçado está embeiçado por ela, dominado pelo irmão-tritão-violador quando assim é conveniente, e é um “homem do seu tempo, coitadito, que até é boa pessoa mas tem “aquela” ideia das mulheres”; c) CC a fugir continuamente para ir ter com Dylan, o tritão/sereio com quem faz o par romântico, não se abstendo de agir em conformidade; d) ter conversas que julgo que a autora acredita terem sido filosóficas com Gaia e na verdade se limita a um resumir dos acontecimentos e a falar mal de tudo o que *cough*aautora*cough* elas discordam; e) CC a tornar as mulheres (feias e velhas) que trabalham no mosteiro num bando de pitas “modernas e orgulhosas da sua condição feminina”.
No fim, lá se resolvem as coisas. Sem querer desenvolver muito, concordo que é efectivamente um milagre o modo como o soldado que mencionei no acidente de avião recuperou de uma cabeça-explodida-por-uma-hélice (são casos muy raros). Não ficamos a saber como ficou a sereia Ondina com quem CC trocou de corpo, mas suponho que P.C. Cast terá ou teve isso em mente para um dos próximos livros da saga. Eu já não saberei.

Thanks goodness i was smart enough not to buy this piece of "literature", i'd really really regret my money, even if it was 5 cents..

I have a habit, either good or bad: I never give up books, no matter what a torture it can be to finish them. Perfect example of pure torture it was! After finally, finally scrolling the last page, i ended up with 2 thoughts in my mind:

~ Why oh why the author didn't stop on writing a lovely fairy tale for children? It could have been a neat, magic book, naking the readers smile, not cringe in disgust running through those loathsome porn details she decided to fullfill the book with?

A human making love to a merman. A merman making love to a mermaid. A mermaid making love to a human. Are you crazy, lady? "His spear pierced into her sanctuary", his risen flesh was trembling with irresistible desire", etc etc, is it supposed to be literature or a cheapo romance paperback i was reading at 12 giggling at all those "her nipples hardened after his gentle touch running through her hungry body" - YUCK! Anyways, what spear, it's a damn MERMAN!

The whole idea is full of most ridiculous ridiculosities: a brother (a merman btw) wanting to rape his sister (dear author lady, you definitely must have some troubles), the main heroine getting drunk on her birthday and setting a ritual; the chick transformed to a mermaid for whatever reason; another lusty knight, gosh, all i wanted was to spit and then puke. Or vice versa. Or both at the same time. The preamble with Air Force stuff was totally unnecessary and what is worst, completely inappropriate. And holy moly, naming the merman DILAN.. That's pretty sad, with the same success he could've been named Jack or John. Or better yet BOB. A Merman Bob, lovely, eh?

All my ideas and beliefs in magic are ruined lol Dear P.C.Cast, i read you're teaching artistic writing in the university, please don't do that :)

Never again anything by this "author" will come close to my hands. I was writing the same dumb low-quality stories (with no sex parts of course) at the age of 7, when i was a great mermaid fan. Perhaps i should have published them lol(less)

P. C. Cast tornou-se conhecida do público pela sua saga juvenil de vampiros, A Casa da Noite, que escreve em conjunto com a sua filha, Kristin. Tenho de confessar que apesar de ter adorado o conceito desta saga e o tema deste livro em particular e, já agora, a capa que está lindíssima, quando vi quem era a escritora desmoralizei de imediato, por isso, não pensei mais no livro, tirando para o dar de prenda de anos à minha tia mais nova que tem vindo a insistir para eu o ler e lá decidi fazer a vontade à criatura. E, vou ter de admitir que não é tão mau como eu julgava. Continuo a pensar que se fosse outra pessoa a escrevê-lo que estaria muito melhor mas tenho de dar a mão à palmatória e dizer que no geral foi uma leitura agradável.
A história não é brilhante nem nada que se pareça mas a ideia está engraçada e o facto de não ir com expectativas nenhumas fez com que eu gostasse mais do livro do que se calhar seria suposto. Mesmo assim, a verdade é que continuo a achar que Cast tem boas ideias mas não sabe aproveitá-las ou desenvolvê-las. Neste livro não soube aproveitar quer os cenários marítimos, quer a mitologia relacionada com o mar. Aliás, para um livro com sereias, soube a pouco. Preferia que ela tivesse aproveitado a vastidão de coisas relacionadas com o tema em vez do caminho que ela escolheu e que na minha perspectiva, tirou a piada ao livro. Eu queria sereias e mar, um romance digno de Pequena Sereia, não mosteiros e questões religiosas, por favor.
Mais uma vez, Cast quer exceder-se e a coisa não funcionou. O que é irritante, porque a pouca parte relacionada com o mar está fantástica. A sério! Até eu fiquei parva porque está giro e deu-me vontade de ler mais até chegarmos outra vez a terra, aí lá se foi a vontade. Tirando Geia, as personagens mais interessantes eram as marinhas e a escritora não soube explorar a sua ideia inicial.
Quanto aos diálogos existe uma ligeira melhoria para aquilo que eu já tinha lido dela e mesmo em questão de personagens, estão melhor concebidas e construídas, o que faz com que exista uma identificação maior com eles da nossa parte. Infelizmente, mesmo aqui tem a tendência de não sei quantos pretendentes para a protagonista. Ela não se pode cingir ao mau da fita e ao querido de serviço de vez em quando? É que isto enerva qualquer um.
Sinto que fiquei mais de pé atrás com o livro pelas pequenas evidências pelas quais Cast é conhecida, só que isso não é algo que eu possa alterar, logo a minha opinião do livro também não pode ser melhor. Este é um daqueles casos que se o tivesse lido à uns aninhos teria gostado mais.
Sendo realista achei este livro melhor em termos gerais e como a pessoa que o tem vai comprar a restante saga eu vou ler pelo menos o próximo a ver se a coisa melhora senão, tenho bom remédio, não leio mais. O problema é que dizem que o melhor está muito melhor e eu gosto ainda mais do próximo tema, o que eu ainda não sei se é bom. Esperemos para ver.

Allora cominciamo subito col dire che avevo già letto il libro della Cast in inglese, così come tutta la serie Goddess Summoning, per cui sapevo già cosa aspettarmi.
A differenza dell’altra serie scritta da P.C.Cast e da sua figlia Kristin, la serie della Casa della Notte, che non mi era piaciuta per niente, qui la scrittrice è riuscita a stupirmi piacevolmente.

Dovete sapere che adoro e lo ripeto, ADORO, i libri in cui si parla di miti e leggende, ma soprattutto di divinità ed ecco la serie che parla delle antiche divinità greche: si parla prettamente di divinità femminili ma in alcuni libri, come Goddess of Spring e Goddess of Light, ci sono divinità maschili del calibro di Ade ed Apollo.
Ma veniamo al libro in questione, Il libro segreto delle Sirene: la storia gira intorno alla protagonista femminile, il sergente Christine Canady, detta CC, che, prima di partire per una missione, la sera del suo 25esimo compleanno decide di praticare un rito per far entrare un po’ di magia nella sua vita.
Partita per la missione, l’aereo precipita nell’oceano mietendo vittime tra cui un altro sergente, da poco conosciuto, e Christine sta per morire salvo poi venir salvata da una sirena, la principessa Ondina, figlia della dea della Terra, Gea, e del dio del mare, Lir ovvero Poseidone, che effettua uno scambio di corpi per aiutare CC a sopravvivere.
Di colpo però la nostra protagonista viene catapultata nel Galles medievale.
Ed anche lì i guai non finiranno mai tra il fratello della vera Ondina, Serpedonte, che vuole possedere la sorella a tutti i costi, un abate che dà la caccia alle presunte “streghe” ed un prode cavaliere in cerca di moglie. Ma ad aiutarla ci saranno le donne che vivono all’interno del monastero, in cui CC si finge una principessa scampata ad un naufragio, la stessa Gea che desidera un futuro migliore per la figlia, ed il tritone Dylan, di cui CC si è innamorata e che a sua volta è ricambiata.
Ci saranno scene in cui scoppierete a ridere, altre, specialmente verso il finale, in cui verserete qualche lacrimuccia, ma alla fine il vero amore riuscirà a sconfiggere la morte e le barriere del tempo e dello spazio.
Lo stile della Cast è fluido, il libro come ho già detto prima mi ha piacevolmente colpito e con il finale l’autrice è riuscita a stupirmi.
Unica pecca!? IL TITOLO! Non esiste alcun libro segreto delle Sirene! Preferivo molto di più il titolo inglese Goddess of Sea in quanto più attinente alla trama e alla serie in questione (Goddess Summoning Novels).
Spero che la Newton Compton prenda in considerazione l’idea di lasciare il titolo del secondo libro, Goddess of Spring, inalterato! Anche perché è quello che preferisco!

Leute, das Buch ist Hammer :) Eine sehr, sehr schöne Mischung aus ein bisschen Märchen, historischer Roman und die wohlbekannte Cast Erotik. Am Ende konnte ich es gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen, so erpicht war ich darauf gewesen, zu wissen wies ausgeht.

Für mich war die Story mal was ganz anderes. Entweder ist es Fantasy oder ein historischer Roman, aber beides zusammen hatte ich noch nicht gelesen (wer mir was empfehlen kann, immer her damit :)).
Die ersten 70 Seiten kann man getrost in die Tonne kloppen, uninteressant und man denk, das Christine nicht mehr alle Waffeln beisammen hat. Danach fängt aber der Zauber, das Märchen an. Während des Absturzes und dem Tausch der Körper mit Undine wechselt auch die Zeit (1014).
Es passiert sehr viel und Christine schlägt sich sehr gut als Undine. Sie liebt den Meermann Dylan, muss sich in einem Kloster gegen frauenfeindliche Mönche schlagen, einen Ritter der ihr den Hof macht und sich ab und an in Undines Stiefbruder Triton verwandelt, noch schwerer hätten sie es ihr nicht machen können oder?

Der Schreibstil von der Autorin lässt sich wieder problemlos lesen, ist einfach und umgangssprachlich gehalten und ihre Erotik Passagen erst, sie drückt sich so passend aus. Man fühlt sich auch gleich ins dunkle Mittelalter zurück versetzt bzw in die Unterwasserwelt. Was ich mir bis jetzt nicht vorstellen konnte, ist, wo bitte schön der Penis an diesem Meermann zu finden ist. Schwimmt der die ganze Zeit mit dem Ding da rum?! Und wo ist bei der Frau "das Loch"? Und finde nur ich das gruselig, das sie mit ihm als Frau und er als Fisch zusammen Sex haben? Nee, Arten übergreifender Sex ist echt nichts für mich^^'

In diesem Teil kam außer der Göttin Gaia und Poseidon kein weiterer Gott vor. Schade aber es war auch so gut :)

Fazit:
Ich kann jedem das Buch empfehlen der die Bücher von Cast mag und auf historische, fantasy und erotik Romane steht :) Es gibt viele Sex Stellen, trotzdem hat das Buch auch eine vernünftige Story zu bieten. Auch hier eine Kaufempfehlung und ich freu mich auf Band 3, der im Oktober erscheinen wird und die Hauptheldin meinen Namen tragen wird und auch Flughäfen mag <3(less)

Awful. One of my sixth form students demanded that I read this so clearly some people love this. i just don't understand why.

The characters and plot have no depth, the relationships forged within the book feel false and shallow, and the lead character is one of the most annoying I have ever read.

She switches bodies with a Mermaid and for the rest of the novel barely pays thought to her 'actual' life and family and friends back home. The real mermaid with newly acquired legs does a flit and is...more

I really wanted to smack him and Abbot William upside the head for their continuous shows of chauvinism. The fact that William was the son of Gaea and Lir really shocked me to the core because I would have thought that being a son of two gods, he would have been a bit kinder, despite his loss of memory.

She falls in love with this incredible merman, but things aren’t always neat & tidy. There has been a strugglewith the original mermaid (Undine) CC is now inhabiting and her brother and now CC is right in the middle of it. It isn’t pretty.

It’s not often I read a book that after finishing it, has me jumping on the computer to type out a review. Goddess of the Sea did that and more. The story is self discovery, love, female friendships & magic, all rolled into an amazing story. The characters are people you’ll fall in love with right off the bat, the bad people not so much. But I absolutely loved CC & Dylan, he words to CC made me turn girlie about true love.

One of my big things with books is mystery, I don’t want to be able to guess the outcome of a book right away. Goddess of the Sea shocked me more then once, it was amazing! Like down to the core shocked me, trust me once you read it you’ll be so shocked at how neatly everything ties in at the end. But I won’t say anymore, I don’t want to ruin it!

Another thing, this book was a gift for my 30th birthday from Monica at Bibliophilic Book Blog & while reading it I realized this is a book that every female should gift their friends. It totally embodies the love of women & strong friendships, it made me mushy. I know what my best-friend is getting for Christmas now & I suggest you all get your closest female friend a copy! Thank you Monica!

I can’t say enough good things about this book, it truly was just a great story that made me love my girlfriends all the more.
