Bakat - Keberanian - Nasib baik.

"Aku ingin menjadi pembuat kembang api," Lila berhasil berkata.
Razvani tertawa keras sekali.
"Kau? Tidak mungkin! Dan apa yang kauinginkan dariku?"
"Sulfur Bangsawan," jawab Lila tersedak.

Pikir g "loh sejak kapan China pake Rupee?" Sebenernya seh g mulai curiga dari awal munculnya gajah putih bernama Hamlet.Ow ternyata?! se ...more

Ayah Lila, Lachland menolak memberitahu rahasia menjadi pembuat kembang api sejati.

I knew of the author from ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy, though I have not read them myself.
This was one of the quickest books I have ever read, I know it’s not that long, but I couldn’t help myself. The story is set in a far off country in a past time, Malaysia around 1900 I would guess, but it isn’t really significant.
The story is exciting throughout, engaging the imagination in so many ways, visualising demons, spirits, jungle, or volcano, but more t

"Firework-Maker's Daughter" takes place in a surreal world that has Chinese, Indian and fairy tale influences. Lila, is the firework maker's daughter who dreams of following in her father's footsteps while he thinks she needs to concentrate on finding a husband. Her father has held back the knowledge of the journey every firework maker must make before they be a true firework-maker. Lila is furious at that her father doesn't trust her enough to tell her.

This is a coming of age story, Lila turns from being egocentric to thinking about others. In the book, she runs away from home without telling her father. She goes on this journey by herself and discovers that she not only has determination, but independence. Secondly, Lila has good friends, which everyone should have. We were meant to live in community together, to help each other out in times of crisis and to be honest with one another, which this story has both. Thirdly, Lila has a father tha ...more

Shame on You!).

My previous experience with Philip Pullman was only watching the film of the Golden Compass, so
I was eager to acquaint myself with some of his other work.

It's the story of Lila, the girl who wants to emulate her father and become a firework-maker.
The journey to enable her to make this happen takes her to dangerous, exciting places, all
portrayed effectively and evocatively by the author. I read it quickly - I couldn't wait
to see what happened, and its short length works fine. Nick Harris' illustr

Can be read to any age but more likely to be aimed at year 3 and above to read alone.
I did enjoy this book but I think there was little for children in it. The talking elephant will hold some enjoyment for them but other than that I feel that the content may be a little dull for young children. I would not recommend it unless used in a project for art or maybe drama.

Nice fable, but what with it being so short and having lots of pictures, one would expect it to be at a fairly easy reading level. It wasn't - the vocabulary, the setting/cultural references, and the depths of the themes were rather advanced. Maybe best for avid readers age 9-11?

I knew Philip Pullman's works from his famous trilogy His Dark Material, although at first the books are recommended as children books, I just thought it more appropriate for much older child, because the stories are not quite simple to be understood, even for adult ( just like The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis).
But with this book, I definitely agree is suitable for younger reader, not only the main characters and back-ground story close to similar situation for them, but because the messag

very disappointed! I really enjoyed the his dark materials series, but this was in no way similar. The dust jacket said something about keeping me laughing on the edge of my seat until I was finished. I didnt laugh once. predictable story line as well. It read as though it was rushed. I sense a filler book that the publisher assumed would sell based on authors popularity. Thankfully I bought this at the thrift store. I would have rated it one star if I had to pay the suggested $21.95!!

I checked out this story for my children and for myself because I enjoyed The Golden Compass, by the same author. I didn't love it but it's a good story. I can't get the image of a white elephant as billboard out of my mind. My 8 year old daughter liked it. She loves fairy tales and stories with a twist of fantasy that are mostly realistic--I forgot the term for that. Gabriel Garcia Marquez-like stories. I like this story for my daughter largely because the female main character is determined to ...more

bahasanya a la story teller tapi menyenangkan, berisi isu2 gender, animal care, friendship, mix-ras, kasih sayang antara ayah & anak...wah lengkap banget.

Philip Pullman is a master storyteller, there can be no doubt about it. He conjured something ground-breaking with His Dark Materials and he does it here again, albeit on a smaller scale. This is a fairytale in essence, but an epic one. It is packed with Pullman's trademark rich descriptions and characters and an engrossing story. There is plenty on offer here to please both young and old readers. Some great humor, plenty of action, a rich plot and a stirring, epic scale.
Highly recommended.

While I thought that the His Dark Materials trilogy was highly over-rated, Philip Pullman is sometimes a genius. I read The Golden Compass about 4 years ago and was drawn in to the story and the world he evoked. But, the second book was so humdrum, I didn't bother to finish it or read the third. (This was way before the movie.)

However, I did read Clockwork because it was featured in A Common Reader Catalog and I trust them. The story was haunting and down right scary. I loved it!! With t
