Swimming Without a Net by Mary Janice Davidson is without a doubt cute, light, fluffy and humorous. By far better than the Undead series.
Fred is a half breed mermaid with green hair and a foul, whiny personality. Working for the New England Aquarium as a marine biologist, she is extremely good at what she does. Socializing with fish instead of humans could create a few slight problems though. Very slim and pretty but insecure because of her heritage, she's not really sure where she fits into...more

Personally, I think MJD is a fairly poor writer - her heroines are cliched and one-dimensional, fashionistas and "spunky" divas. Her books, be they peopled with vampires or other paranormal creatures, are beach reads. This one I piked up a USO for free, and used for entertainment on the ride home. The story is very light but I give it two stars because at least the characters are a unusual race - merpeople. The lead character is Frederika, a mermaid that is a marine biologist who hides...more

I'm not quite done with this yet, just cause I haven't been able to sqeeze in time to read the last couple of days. But I just ran across the best line of dialogue ever. And I think it explains why I like these books. The plots are ok, the characters are ok, the mermaid deal is unique, but really it's that the main character, Fred, is such a rag. And I love that (totally opposite of the Shopaholic books, which I also adore. But she's faaaaar too optimistic). Anyway, so here's the line.

ok well if you like the first book more power to you. The second followed along with the first the chaRACTERS GROWTH ARE MOVING SO SLOWLY.Im feel a little sorry for fredrika, every other character in the book is getting some except her.. but although she isnt her best friend has enough for the both of them. This book had so many new characters that it was kinda disgusting.
Also to find out that her father was also a major bad guy was really a bummer, it seems like her character has bad luck and...more

I should probably classify this as romance as well, but too many romance books on my shelves freaks me out.
So . . . I really like reading about Fred. (Not that I have any problem at all with Disney heroines. I'm a huge fan of The Little Mermaid too, actually.) She's an interesting character, and she's fun to read about. The cast of characters that surround her are also fun. It's not an incredibly deep book, but it is a fun read. What more can I say than I love Fred. She's everything mermaids generally aren't. Intelligent, sassy, grumpy. And now she's been invited to join in a giant undersea conference to determine if her fellow merfolk should "swim out of the net" so to speak. Revealing themselves to humans can seem pretty scary, especially considering what we sucky land-walkers do to the water that covers 3/4ths of the globe.

This book lacked in almost every regard. The characters lack any real motivation in their "pursuit" of Fred, a supposedly alluring mermaid. Fred is unsympathetic, mean, and thoroughly uninteresting. I don't know why any of the men are interested in her in the least. Also, for a romance, there's no actual romance, either in the way of wooing or in the way of sex.
There is plenty of better paranormal romance out there, some that actually lives up to its name.

Oh Janice has done it again - her heroine is sassy, funny, and totally conflicted between two great guys, both of whom told her they loved her and then disappeared. Now she's told that she has been invited (actually STRONGLY urged) to attend a meeting of her father's people. She's really not sure about this - after all her father disappeared before she was born, and all she has of him is his eye color, green hair, and fins. Did I mention he was a merman?

This was another quick light read. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I did the first, but I would still recommend it.
In this book, Fred the Mermaid gets to learn more about her mermaid side of the family while helping all of the mermaids of the world decide if they should come out to humans all while trying to choose between the hunky human doctor or the gorgeous price of the mermaids.

My friend Jana introduced me to these books and I absolutly love them. The main character Fred is quite the grouch and a pessimist but very funny the way she goes about it. I love that about her. The way the author writes about Fred and her stories keeps me wanting more. I found myself laughing outloud many times while reading this book. Very entertaining. The ending was left wide open for more about Fred and her mermaid (Undersea Folk) friends. Thanks Jana!!!

Okay, the protagonist isn't so snarky in this book that I didn't like her in the first one. In this book, she picks one of the two suitors, and she finds out about her merman father.
I love Jonas, Artur, Meekan (Artur's dad), and really all of the supporting characters.
Davidson continues to show that a novel that isn't particularly deep but humorously written is a good read. I love her stuff!
Read the first book before this one though.

It was cute but I could tell that it had been stretched out, and I finished reading it so that I could say I'd finished reading it. Fred's political acumen is less than stellar and I was wondering why everyone was so taken with her when she was so rude (even if she has a good heart and sticks up for her principles, so do some of the other characters).
Good for a plane ride or sitting by the pool.

For this second installment of the Fred the Mermaid series I was a bit disappointed. It did not hold the same appeal as the first book. I am not sure if it is because I was upset that she (sorta) made a choice between Thomas and Artur and I did not agree or that the whole Palegic was kinda anti-climatic for me. Still an excellent book but did not hold the same excitement and thrill the first did.

Fred is called to a pelagic of mermaids by the High King himself, in order to help decide whether mermaids should go public or not. Along for the ride is Prince Artur, hunky marine biologist Thomas, and her best friend Jonas.
Maybe I'm not a fan of this series as much as some of her others, but these books ring hollow to me. Not much happens, and character development is limited. Disappointing.

Another entertaining installment in this most enjoyable series. I love the fact that it's about a mermaid - that earns it big points right there. Don't know how many other series feature mermaids/men as the main paranormal "creature". It's definitely mind candy and goes quickly, but Fred is a rather likable curmudgeon, and one can't help rooting for her.

Actually liked this one more than the first (which I believe I totally hated, if I remember correctly- so maybe that's not saying much). Perhaps the characters are growing on me. Or maybe Ms. Davidson's characteristic lack of plot just wasn't quite as blaringly obvious this time.

This is a very quick read. Not a lot of depth to it. I think the only reason I like the book at all is because Fred's personality reminds me of one of my online friends.

This was a quick read. Very light-hearted, but obviously just an attempt to make money. My only gripe is that Fred ended up with the wrong guy, but never mind.

This is a sequel to "Sleeping With the Fishes". It was rather mindless and obvious continuation of the series, and made it clear there were going to be more.
