This was the Readers Choice 2004 winner. It is heart warming book about a community who is struck by a tornado causing them to not only rebuild their town, but also rebuild and re-evaluate themselves. A G rated story. Easy read. I like stories of new beginnings, repentance, forgiveness, and unconditional service.
It's characters are very predictable for a small town; mean old lady, town drunk, white trash family, town gossip, helpful mentor, but hey life is pretty much that way anyway. I was gra...more

Lisa Wingate is quickly turning into one of my favourite authors. Her other novel "Tending Roses" was phenomenal and this one was no disappointment either.
From back cover:
"Twenty-one year old Jenilee Lane, whose dreams are as narrow as the sky is wide, is the last person to expect anything good to come out of the tornado that rips across the Missouri farmland surrounding her home. But some inner spark compels her to take action-to rescue her elderly neighbour, Eudora Gibson, from the cellar in w...more

If you are in the mood for a sweet heart warming, everything works out ok eventually, Hallmark Hall of Fame type book, Good Hope Road fits the bill. If you are not, you will think it is rather contrived and predictable. In fact you may want to scream occasionally. Some of the characters are very stereotypical - gossipy old small town woman, white trash girl, rich snobby doctor, drunk abusive father etc. And all the loose ends do tie up rather way too nicely. After reading two depressing books in...more
Good Hope Road I finished Good Hope Road last night. I didn't realize I was in for a good cry session! This was a really touching book. It caused me to evaluate myself on many levels. (It wasn't a very long book how did it hit me from so many angles?) For example: How often do I hide behind what I perceive others think of me? How often do I make and hold tight to inaccurate judgements about people? How often do I refuse to allow someone to change? How often does the Lord have to use dramatic eve...more
I liked this book, but not as much as Tending Roses. However, I thought it good and these books are uplifting and positive as are their messages. One of the quotes from the book hit me right between the eyes and I realized that she was talking about me right now. "Lacy felt small and helpless and afraid of everything. When you're afraid of everything, the thing you are most afraid of is happiness. You're afraid to step into even a little piece of it, because you know that as soon as you do, some...more
This book was very timely as the premise of tornadoes hitting towns throughout Missouri and watching the real life being played out on the news. It really put this book in prospective. I absolutely loved Tending Roses, Lisa Wingates first novel and so I was excited to read another of hers. I felt it didn't live up to that one. It was a nice little feel good. The whole novel takes place in a 3 day period which changes the course of the 3 main characters lives. A "whitetrash" Jenilee Lane saves th...more
A sweet story about what can happen to a community when they band together during and following a crisis. In this case a devastating tornado. I enjoyed the book and I liked the theme, the idea that people can change and improve their lives (and sometimes it takes a tragedy to push them to it). The reason I only gave it two stars (I'd have given it 2 1/2 if that was an option) was because I felt like everything was too neatly gift-wrapped and packaged to tie everything up for the ending. The auth...more
A tornado destroys a small town in Missouri leaving young Jenilee's home standing and older Eudora's home just down the road totally gone. Jenilee has very little hope of ever getthing out of the situation she is in and doing something in the medical field. The story told by these 2 women and is how they help each other and others through the destruction by the tornado and the destruction that has been ongoing in their personal lives. The main theme is putting the past behind and making a better...more
I keep having bad luck picking books, they all seem to be about twisted personalities, adulterers, or vampires. I wanted to read a book that gave me hope and had a happy ending, and this one sure fit the bill. Regular people dealing with adversity, and how different people respond to it. The main characters are a young woman considered to be white trash by her community, and an older judgmental neighbor. When tornados tear apart their lives, they are brought together in a way that causes them to...more
I don't know what it is about Lisa Wingate. Her novels are easy to read, similar to each other, and fairly predictable. They are also incredibly compelling. Good Hope Road is the the second book after Tending Roses. It's a stand alone novel, although some of the characters from Tending Roses appear, and these characters will appear in The Language of the Sycamores.

Knowing that this was the second book in the tending roses series, I was anxious to dive in and continue reading about the characters I loved from book 1. But I really had to be patient, because this book started with a whole new set of characters that you don't even know how they are related to the Tending Roses characters until 3/4 of the way in. But it was a good story in itself, and it basically sets the stage for Book 3. I really liked this story about Jenilee Lane.
I'm just going to cut and paste a synopsis from B&N:
Jenilee Lane has never been much of a Good Samaritan. But when a tornado sweeps through her home town, she puts her all into rummaging for people's mementos. She even rescues and befriends elderly Eudora Gibson. Brought close by tragedy, the two will learn lessons about the resilience of the human spirit and the ties that make a community strong.
I liked the way this book made me think. A great book club book.

Loved this book. I fell in love with the characters and slowly discovering their backgrounds kept me wanting to read the book non-stop. The context of the book may sound dull...an elderly lady and a girl in her early twenties descriptions and experiences of a small town in Missouri that gets almost utterly destroyed from a tornado. However the lessons they learn and things they uncover make you think deeply about what matters most in life and the way treat each other.
Amazing that some people get the changes of their life thrust upon them like a tornado, and some sneak up on you and get familiar before you even notice they're new. I was amazed at the change she was able to make in herself in such a short time, and look at others in abusive circumstance that take a lifetime to change, and really, it's just as significant. Great read, taken to a totally different direction than the first book.

Andrea
marked it as to-read
Apparently, I accidentally ordered not one but TWO of this book off Amazon and didn't catch it until it was shipping to me. I clearly don't need TWO of the SAME book, lol, and if any of you would be interested in purchasing it from me, I would be happy to sell it to you, lol. I paid $11.50 for it. Please let me know if you are interested! This book came HIGHLY recommended to me! I hear it's great! Thanks! :)
I absolutely loved this book! It is amazing the blessings that can come from tragedy! I highly recommend this book! Some of my favorite new quotes come from this book. “Had I not suffered the loss of everything I thought would matter, I would have missed everything that truly mattered in my life…”. “People should learn to leave the past behind, you can’t plow a clean row while you’re turned around looking at where you’ve been”. “When you’re afraid of everything, the thing you are most afraid of...more
this is the 2nd book in the "Tending Roses" trilogy. I did not know, it was a series, and I did not like it as much as "Tending Roses",but it was good , fast read. One of those heartwarming "hallmark Hall of Fame" type books! The story of forgiveness, new beginnings, and good coming from tragedy. Sst in Missouri, after a tornado sweeps through the area destroys everything....
Story started off a little slow, but after a'while
the storyline came together and the main chatacters'
came alive. They came to see their neighbors and
those God allowed to cross their lives through God's
eyes vs. their previous habits of seeing through
their own and judging.
The Good Hope Road became full of hope &
good for those who were willing to travel on it :)

This was passed on by a friend. I wasn't sure at first since it is a bit on the "Christian" side with a definite message. But I did get caught up in the story (one young woman after a tornado hits her town. The characters were real and it did not always follow the standard line, which kept me interested. It was over way to quickly.
This story was one that showed how people can be judgemental when they don't know the whole story and how whole lives can be ruined just because grudges are held and people are judged. It had a good ending, I liked how the characters learned to change their points of view, that a disaster can bring out the best parts of people.
A tornado rips through the town of Poetry, and it changes the lives of the characters in more ways than the reader might expect. We see the heartache of the past being brought up and re-examined, learning what made the characters who they are and how they can change. I've read this book twice now and plan to read it again.
This is the second in this "loose" series by Lisa Wingate. It had A LOT more drama than the other two because it centers around the aftermath of a tornado. Destruction like that is harder for me to handle emotionally. I didn't like it as well as the other two but still enjoyed seeing the main character grow into herself.
I liked the interactions between the character in this book. The three main characters especially were interesting to me. Their personalities were so realistic and I could see connections to people I have known. I loved the sense of hope that comes when people work together and I think the author really brought that out well.
I found this on a great website that rates the books by sex, violence, and language. This one passed all three with flying colors. It is set in the midwest and is about two ladies in particular. It is about their journey together as they recover from a tornado in their town and how they get past their prejudices.
This a story of hope and of second chances, for a 21 year-old white-trash girl and the elderly woman who becomes her unlikely friend, a middle-aged doctor who has lost the will to care, and an elderly man who has harbored a big secret most of his life. It is a quick read and so uplifting that I cried from beginning to end. (No surprise there). I have loved everything I have read from Lisa Wingate, although this book is my favorite. Her books are not sequels but they tie together, in that, a mino...more
