In a world nearly identical to ours, the North won the Civil War, Ben and JLo got married, and everyone dresses well to attend the Grammys. Oh, and Russia never sold Alaska to the U.S. Instead, Alaska is a rough, beautiful country ruled by a famously eccentric royal family, including oldest daughter, Princess Alexandria, whose acid wit and bad case of insomnia have turned...more

This was really rather dull for a MaryJanice Davidson book. The only reason its not getting a 1 rating from me is because I enjoy Davidson's writing style.

Princess Alex has turned into a walking stressed zombie due to her insomnia. The family psychiatrist has decided that a break from her normal surroundings might help, so she suggests Alex take a trip down to South Dakota to help out with the opening of an aquarium that their family is funding. When Alex gets there she meets Dr. Sheldon Rivers...more

Hmm...I'm trying to think of an apt desciption for this book. Oh, got it!
Do you remember that Friends episode about the guys' friend Gandolf coming to visit? They were so stoked, envisioning the best night of their lives. And then he didn't show. Yeah...that's what reading this book was like after reading The Royal Treatment. Such high hopes that weren't realized.
Princess Alexandria has the be the most boring tormented soul I've ever read. Seriously, she could have walked her insomniac butt of...more

The third book in this series was my favorite (so far), but this one was still very good. Same Davidson style, different couple, great romance. Pretty much the same things I like about all of the Davidson books I’ve read so far.

The Royal Pain is about Alex, one of the daughters in the royal family, going to the U.S. and meeting a biologist, Dr. Shel Rivers.

This book had a bit more serious emotional stuff than most of Davidson’s books, and I think I would have li...more

Kinda disappointed in this one. I read the first book in the series and absolutely loved it. The second book felt a little flat. I think I just couldn’t connect to the two main characters. Princess Alex is very unlikable. I know the character is supposed to be complicated, but it seems like she has too many problems. I found myself wanting to reach into the book and smack her. Get a grip, woman! As for the male interest, Dr. Sheldon Rivers is an arrogant ass and never changed through the whole b...more

I actually read this series out of order (read book one, then book three, then book two), but this was still a fun, fast read that only took me about two hours to finish.

This installmant of the royal Baranov family from the country of Alaska centers around Princess Alexandria Baranov, the sister who saved her father's life at the end of THE ROYAL TREATMENT. Suffering from insomnia, nightmares, and a wee bit of paranoia after that event, King Al (along with the royal doctor, Dr. Pohl), decide tha...more

A quick, easy read, but I didn't like it quite as well as The Royal Treatment. I had hoped this one was another story about Christina, rather than another character in the family. I really didn't feel like I knew the characters in this one, and honestly didn't care too much for them. It bugged me that both Alex and Jenny just seemed to fall into things with these men they barely knew. I felt none of them had any chemistry with each other.

The stories are not super riveting but they are interesting after a fashion. the author has done well to keep her character likeable despite some of her views about the upper and lower classes. It is clear that she was very sheltered and some of her opinions are more parroted than deeply believed in.

There is also a slight romantic theme, but the love interest is more honest than really makes for a 'good' romance.

Readable but forgettable.

This novel focuses on Princess Alex and Princess Chris is only in the background. It was nice getting a different view point and seeing how the assassination attempt really bothered Alex. The Royal Pain didn't have the humor that was found in The Royal Treatment. I really liked Jenny and would have liked to see more of her story.

The second in a trilogy, some parts of this book were humorous and some weren't; some parts were good and others weren't. I enjoyed the family dynamics, but the romance itself was underwhelming. It isn't high on my re-read list.
Miriam
I had expected much more concerning the cover text. It had some rare funny parts, so I finished it at least. I would give it 1.5 stars, it's somewhere between didn't like it and was still ok.
Kate
Got this for a light read, the premise sounded fun... Unfortunately, it featured an unlikeable heroine, unnecessarily (seemingly forced) crass language, really poor, unrealistic dialogue.
Kathy Davie
This was too funny. MJ at her best! Ripping off the Royal family, cultural expectations. Completely irreverent and unexpected with a fun romance.
Patrice
Davidson is still oddly obsessed with aquariums and marine biology, but this was still a fun story. The Alaskan Royal family is such a quirky set of characters, I can't see how any story in this series could be anything but entertaining.
LoudVal
Fun, silly romp. What a hair-brained family. Nothing like a few well-placed, well-meant swear words to help the story along, either.
Dina
I tried to read, got into the first 20 pages and couldn't read anymore... too difficult to get into the book.

This trilogy, written by MaryJanice Davidson, was so very cute!! I really enjoyed this one.

Not an intellectual plot but a funny and charming easy read
Diana
Princess Alexandria tries to escape from her nightmares from last year's assassination attempt by visiting an aquarium in North Dakota. She meets Dr. Shel Rivers and decides that he'll make a good diversion.

Not as good as the first installment. Alex has a lot of issues and vacillates between being unlikeable and exasperating. Shel is a little cranky at first but quickly becomes an ideal guy.
Sara
Imagine Alaska is it's own monarchy... now imagine the Princess of Alaska is suffering from PTSD brought about by killing her father's would-be assassin, so her family ships her off to the midwest to make nice with the head of an aquarium they've sponsored. There she meets a man who hates her on sight and immediately lusts after him. Yep... it goes on like that.
