Theme: global, informational, similarities and differences in culture

Another great informational book by UNICEF. Right away the bookend draws me (and my students') attention with the picture of kids playing together. A great way to talk with what the kids about what they notice. I love the richness of the text and the authenticity of the photos. I am not an expert however I feel this book is authentic and not stereotypical of cultures.

This title covers countries from six of the seven continents (Antarctica is not covered). What I especially liked was how they tried to show multiple students from the bigger countries. This shows that schools vary a great deal inside as well as outside the country. The book also tries to balance rural and urban environments, providing a more comprehensive look at schools worldwide. The numerous photographs make the information more real to the reader. The organization is attractive and follows ...more

EXCELLENT book that introduces readers to children from five parts of the world and some of the countries in them: The Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. Each child's family, home, traditions, activities, and, of course, school, are highlighted with interesting text and photos. Each section is introduced with a map of the focus area of the world, the countries in that area, and a brief paragraph of information about each. An absolutely amazing way to teach your children about diffe ...more

This is an amazing book densely packed with information about education in over 30 countries throughout the world. Actual students are used to exemplify the education system of each country. Since the same aspects of education are discussed in each section, it is easy to make comparisons and contrasts between the different countries The pictures add a great deal to the impact of the book. This book would be an excellent resource for any social studies curriculum. It is definitely targeted toward ...more

I love the idea of this book: a look at children in schools all around the world. I just couldn't get into this book. I'm not sure if I wasn't in a non-fiction mood or what but it was just really boring to me, sad.
