This was a different type story then I usually read but still a good one. John had made many mistakes in his life, drinking was a big one that had a hold on him. One night he picked up a hiker while driving and very drunk and they had accident and the hiker died, making John to be charged with manslaughter and spend time in prison. This changed his life in many ways and that of his family. He had a son that was down syndrome child, and two daughters many years apart. When he returned from p More...

The Returning - Ann Tatlock -2009

Five years has passed and John -sent to prison on a manslaughter charge which occured one night when drunk driving is on his way home. However when he arrives home , alot has changed over the years and not just the outward appearances either. Can the Family work out the differences and become a family once again ?. I just have to say... That this book does not end like you want it too. It leaves you wanting, needing a more romantic end for Andrea John's poor wife. I thought for sure she would at least come to desire having Christ in her life but this book is focused around John's and Billy's relationship with God it really leaves the family out. How can you think your family can begin again without a strong Godly center? I did like the story of second chances and that is what this book is all about. John c More...

A man comes home to his family--wife, three kids--after serving time and discovers things are much different than they were when he left. It's an interesting take on something you don't often think about. I enjoyed the characters very much, however the plot was very predictable. It's an easy read; I finished it in one day.

This author writes fabulous and heartbreaking stories and this is no exception. It tells of a family's first summer together after five years of separation--the father has just been released from prison. During the summer, everyone in the family must adjust to their new situation. A+.

Ann Tatlock is one of my favorite authors. But I couldn't even finish this book. The plot was so flat and boring. The characters were so unbelievable and uninteresting. I was so surprised that the author wrote a book like this. All her other books are so much better.

This was an interesting premise for a novel. However I was a little disappointed in the actual novel All the issues were either too easily resolved or completely glossed over. The novelist left too many issues totally unresolved or ignored.

Give me a break. Every single event is expected, including the plot "twist" and the final scene. "Let's feel good about flawed people trying to be better." Bleah.

This was a good book! Thought provoking-about how sometimes we should just say what's on our minds, with some heart wrenching moments thrown in.

I usually like Ann Tatlock's books but I couldn't get interested in this one. Maybe I've read too many stories just like it.

It was good. Interesting look at real life, and how a family copes with so much heartache and learns to go forward.

a nice tidy story -- too bad life's problems can't always be solved so neatly. But an enjoyable read.
