Meg Tilly, yes the actress from The Big Chill, tries her hand and YA fiction and starts off well. Occasionally the voice of her main character Jack (short for Jacqueline) spouts vocabulary that just doesn't seem believable for even a very bright twelve-almost-thirteen-year-old. But I still like her. Tilly finds her rhythm describing early morning milking, mucking out the chicken coop, retrieving a fresh-caught trout, and there's the magical scene with the porcupine.

This book was a bit disturbing in the subject matter, but I really enjoyed the way in which it was written. It seemed a bit disjointed and ended a little too abruptly for me. I will most likely read again and try to find the triumph that was in other reviews. I will however read more books by meg. As I mentioned, I did enjoy her writing.

A believable YA/ kid's book with a good story and an interesting main character. It's the story of a girl who has to grow up a little too quickly and take care of her younger siblings while living with her great grandmother. I thought the character's voice was well done, and the ending was sweet. Yay Meg Tilly (yes, the actress)!

This is another great book for middle schoolers, except for the fact that there's some rough language. A girl loses her father, and then has to deal with a grief-stricken mother and a very stern grandmother. She learns a lot about herself and her family. I really liked it.

Tragic story. The father is killed in Iraq and the mother bascially loses it. She takes the kids to go live with their great grandmother and just leaves them. G. grandmother is a tough old lady and the oldest daughter basically raises the youngest kids. A good read.

This is an excellent coming of age story. I wonder if it is part autobiography as the Tilley sisters have alluded to a pretty crazy upbringing. Really nice writing from an unexpected source.
