Townsend is a comic genius who presents am unsparing vision of England in all its (fallen) glory, Chavs and Cocaine Socialists alike. Adrian is the post-modern anti-hero, our generation's Holden Caulfield, if Holden Caulfield had been funnier, more human, and even more readable. (I got through Catcher in the Rye on my eleventh birthday in one sitting. The Adrian Mole series is funnier, more original, and a far better satire of society.)

I still re-read the earlier adrian mole books and they always make me laugh. This wasn't as entertaining - not as funny when an oblivious character is 30+ instead of a hapless teenager.
Pandora is still much the same - seems only natural she'd become a Labor MP now that I think of it.
Overall entertaining, but sadly no poems about spawning salmon or letters to the BBC.

Unfortunately, the quirky obnoxious qualities of Adrian's are hilarious and even endearing when he is just a teenager, but the older he gets the more annoying it gets that he hasn't changed. Most of us eventually grow out of those awkward adolescent stages, and Adrian no longer such a sympathetic character.

Before I picked up this book, I had no idea who Adrian Mole or Sue Townsend were. It just so happened that the novel was sitting on the bookshelf in my office one day and I decided to give it a go.
From page one I fell in love with Adrian Mole. Basically, he is a failure. He means well, he does everything he can to be a success, but it always backfires. His story is a true tragic comedy, which fortunately is light enough on the tragedy to keep us from feeling bad.

Acutally enjoyed this alot more the second time round, maybe becuase I'm older now? Poor old Adrian, his life is not turning out quiet how he expected. Bit depressing actually although his son William seems sweet. Glen, not so sweet but he might do better in life now he's finally learned to read. I don't remember Pandora being as much as a bitch as she is. I don't like how it finished, thought things were starting to turn around for Adrian. I really don't remember anything in the next book so am

I first met Adrian Mole when I was in high school and I was introduced to the young adult novel, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4, soon thereafter followed by The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole. Adrian lives outside of London and fancies himself somewhat of an intellectual. Unfortunately, life doesn't always go so well for Adrian - his parents' marriage is always on the rocks, he has issues with his teachers (and all sorts of authority), and he never ever seems to get the girl. But, al

Hmmm... I loved Adrian Mole when he was a teenager, found him annoying in his twenties, and wasn't sure what I would think of him in his thirties. Now that I've finished the book, I'm still not sure.
I think this one is funnier than "The Lost Years," but nowhere close to the original diaries. There were some funny moments - for example, Bridget Jones makes a cameo - but the story dragged. The ending, which I won't spoil for you, didn't work for me - too abrupt.

I had real trouble categorizing this one,is it serious fiction, is it comedy fiction?... i gather its supposed to be a follow up to the Adrian Mole teenage escapades showing us what kind of man he became...was it supposed to be funny? really?, so did the cover reviews promise, but i found it to be more so, a story about meaningless and pathetic life...nothing remotely funny, maybe witty in places with quick observations of situations, but...nothing to laugh out loud about...

Adrian Mole was one of my favourite books when I was a kid, and I have really enjoyed revisiting those books now, but I was not sure that I would actually like the ones that were about him as an adult. I did read this one over ten years ago when it first came out, but my memories were tainted somewhat by the dreadful TV adaptation of this story. I need not have worried, it was actually a very funny tale but, as is always the case with these, it was tinged with some sadness - in this book life

I had this on audiobook, while I was commuting to Washington DC to work from my parents house; big audiobook kick then. Not as awesome as Steve Martin reading "The Pleasure of My Company", but comprable: balancing hilarity and pathos.
The new one, I finished, but I can't find the listing for the damned thing on here... O, I've got an advanced readers edition. La-de-dah.
I'm bragging

I listened to the audio CD version of this book. Difficult, since it was in bad shape form the library. Not a bad book, cute, late 90's British political black humor. I realized I had heard it before, and had a similar reaction. Not completely my cup of tea, I won't be desperate for mare Adrian Mole books, but by the end, i had come to respect and like Adrian Mole quite a bit (and that's saying something).

Okay, Okay. SO I did not do well on my Mastermind appearence on the Sue Townsend books - but I must admit this is my favourite of all the "Mole" diaries.
New Labour get the Townsend treatment and Pandora is a Blair Babe in Tony's cabinet. And Adrian is a TV chef. Laugh out loud funny.

I picked up this book four or five times before I could really get into it, but then I read it in 3 days. Adrian hasn't matured much in the past 16 years, but Townsend makes the update interesting. It ends on a quite sour cliffhanger, so hopefully she's working on the 45-year-old Mole.

"I expect that by tomorrow I will have embellished the story and given myself a heroic status I do not deserve, but all the same, on this night at this hour, I am pleased to record that i acquitted myself well."

A good and easy read, though Adrian is more infuriating than ever before.
The first part of the book is slow, but it gets better as pages go by, and they do so pretty fast too.
I'd recommend this book, though you might have some trouble coping with Adrian's bigotry.

It rather annoyed me that adulthood and fatherhood hadn't changed one iota of Adrian's naivete and idealism. Otherwise, it's a fun romp, as usual. I'm especially taken by William Mole and Archie Tait.

This is the Adrian Mole book about which I'm most ambivalent. It's as funny as you'd expect...but it pushes some story elements to outrageous levels that don't really suit our dear Mr. Mole.

I decided I should read more contemporary fiction and found this on a friend's bookshelf. I wasn't looking for anything difficult and was told it was a quick easy read. Perhaps I should have started with earlier books in the series, I don't know. But I found this to be bane and not nearly as good as I needed it to be. I struggled to get into it (but had nothing to substitute it with, so I kept it on). I wouldn't re-read it, though in my non-failing optimism, I may try and get my hands on on

One of the best witty satires I've read in the recent times.. Ending was a bit of a downer ,but on the whole very engaging. Mole's family is the quintessential dysfunctional unit and Townsend spares nobody. Bridget jones, Margaret Thatcher and even the Queen.Looking forward to reading her other books now

I really wish more nice things would happen to Adrian Mole. I think he deserves it. It's as if Sue Townsend lies awake at night thinking of new ways to make Adrian miserable. I suppose if he were happy, it wouldn't make much of a book, but I'm quite tired of the 'wingeing.'

an interesting read. one of those books that i wonder how different it would be if i were reading it myself instead of having someone read it to me. it’s a diary-format book of a british guy who has lots of mostly bad things happen to him and who’s life seems inherently tragic anyway. this isn’t the first book in the series, but it’s the only one our library has on audio. so, maybe if i had begun reading them at the beginning i would care more deeply for adrian. as it was, i just kept getting ir

At the age of 30 1/4, Adrian is an offal chef on the verge of breaking into television, his wife has left him and their three-year-old son and returned to Nigeria, and a rough-looking boy appears to be stalking him. Pandora is a rising star of New Labour, known by the tabloids as "the people's Pan". Adrian's sister Rosie is now an obnoxious teenager, and the older generation of Moles and Braithwaites are still behaving badly.

I was pretty excited to see the Adrian from my beloved childhood books was back and could hardly wait to see his take on current trends.

This is my favourite Adrian Mole so far. He has grown up and accepted responsibilities. He is still annoying, but in a cute way.

very good book! gives us a little bit of information about what happend in England on the late 90's and is also very entertaining

Took me a while nto read this one not as funny as the others. Adrian is not funny as an adult as he is in his teenage years.

Oh, Adrian Mole...just when you think life is going to work out, someone comes and pulls the rug right out from under you!

Hilarious! Though I don't get the reference to some British politicians and celebrities. I still loved it though.
