When Tropical Storm Faye cut my power off last night, I had little else to do but read by candlelight. My copy of Isabel Allende's Ines of My Soul was in my truck, and walking out in the rain to fetch it didn't seem plausible, and while reading Linda Grey Sexton's memior about her mother, Ann Sexton, is as enjoyable as reading a memoior of a woman who was physcally, emotionally and sexually abused by her mother can be, Searching For Mercy Street didn't seem like the kind of book I ...more

Great movie, mediocre book. Yes, one of the rare times where the movie is significantly better than the book.
Perotta is not a great writer. He's a hip writer and some of his observations are smart and incisive. Yet, in this book and "Joe College", he struggles with the basics like point-of-view. I read Elmore Leonard at the same time and the difference is striking. Even though Leonard is an old fuddy-duddy, he's honed his craft. Perotta hasn't.

I like Tom Perrotta a great deal, but this wasn't my favoritest-of-all-time book of his (it's kind of a toss-up between Joe College and Little Children for me). However, I think the movie (which I saw first - I know, I know; bad me) did it justice admirably. Somewhat like Fight Club, I think I prefer the movie version to the book. But it's still very enjoyable. Any Tom Perrotta book is pretty much a guaranteed good, worthwhile read.

I started reading this book at 11 and finished it by six the same day. Amazing. It's hard for me to describe what I liked so much about it. Yeah, there are a the typical high school stereotypes, but they are treated in such a way that's refreshing and reminds me why I'm glad to be out of high school. I really want to read some more of Tom Perrottta's books since I enjoyed this one so much.

Kinda boring, but a real fast read. I didn't care for the characters, so it was difficult to care whether or not they got what they wanted. Everything happened too quickly. With so many characters I think they all could have been fleshed out a bit better. This is my first Perrotta book, and I've heard lots of good things about him, so maybe I'll just try something a bit longer next time.

So I wasn't as turned off by the book as I was by the movie, everyone seemed a bit more pitiable and less cocky, or maybe I'm just more realistic now?
I'm still wondering about the addition in the movie of the wasp sting on Mr M's eye, cause that's one of the most vivid sceenes. It was definitely effective.

After having Mitch bug me all year about reading this book, I decided I should finally just finish it off. It wasn't quite what I expected, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. It definitely would be an interesting choice for a high school book club discussion.

One of my favorites of the author, I found it bittersweet unlike the movie version which plays it for laughs only. It lead me to think about ambitions and the meritocracy we have created in high school(and beyond).

As a male teacher, I was a little upset about the depiction of male teachers. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it.

When I first saw the movie back in the 1990s, I hadn't embraced my dark side yet. I thought it was depressing and left me with the feeling of, "Now what?"
Of course, as I grew older, I realized that not everything has a happy ending. And I learned how to make fun of the bad parts of life. So when I picked up Election in a bookstore a few years ago, I figured I'd give it a go. Very smart move on my part.

Perrotta writes with a witty, satirical sense of humor. The characters tend to make bad decisions over and over again. Brings back memories of the pettiness of High School. Good, light summer read.

I am going through my Tom Perrotta phase. I held off on this one, because I loved the movie. As much as I loved the movie, I have to admit that the book was better, as usually is the case. In defense of the movie, it's a pretty decent adaptation and where is strays from the book, only make the movie stronger.
The characters in the book are much more sympathetic, especially Tracy and Mr. M. I also preferred the ending in the book, it brought the story full circle. The ending in the movie in fu...more

I read this a few years ago and remember that the movie has stuck with me more than the book. Both were kind of disturbing. Mr. M is not a very scrupulous person.

A little more uplifting and less frantic than the movie. Though I read it after I saw the movie and found myself wishing it was less uplifting and more frantic.

Even if you've seen the movie, which was quite good, the book has a life of its own and is even better. I love anything Perotta writes.

I really enjoy this film, so when I saw the book, grabbed it and liked it. Goes more in-depth about certain characters than the film does (of course.) I now know that all of the players in the film were perfectly cast.

This is probably my favorite Perrotta novel and one of the few books to turn into a movie that I actually liked.

This one, one of his earliest, is a breezy read that doesn't send you scurrying for the dictionary. It's sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and a competent effort.
Esquire magazine has reviewed his latest book and the headline was "The Best Way to Read a Tom Perotta Book? Wait For The Movie." And they're right. His books make good movies, since there is slight expectation of having to transfer memorable characters to the screen. So any competent actor can play them and any director who...more

election.
i saw the movie years ago and loved it.
so, when i saw the book at a book sale, i was completely psyched.
told through multiple narratives, election follows the student government process at a middle american high school. tracy flick, an overacheiver, is assured of victory for student body president, until a meddling teacher (mr m.) convinces the BMOC (football star paul warren) to run against her, inciting mayhem and treachery.
