At times it's a difficult book to read. Not because it's badly written but because Tora has such a difficult life. She's the daughter of a German soldier living in post war Norway. Her mother's husband is a bitter man and she's an easy target. That said it's a hard book to put down because the characters are so interesting. May have to track down the other books in the trilogy.
My heart ached the whole time I read this novel - for Tora especially but also for her mother, for her aunt, for her friend Sol and Sol's mother. These women do not have easy lives, but Tora's burden is most difficult to bear. She's just 11, but she is abused both sexually and physically by her stepfather, her mother puts up an invisible wall of sorrow and silence, and she is an outcast because her father was a German soldier (the novel takes place in post-World War II Sweden).

The early pages o
It is a story of a young girl struggling with her life that is not rosy at all. She is a daughter of a German soldier after the war (in Norway), her stepdad is violent and abusive, her mother seems to be blind to all the things around her and thus Tora feels alone. The angst is quite well described although at times it seems that the author has overestimated the intelligence of an 11-year old. The backround story was also rather captive.
But I did not like this book. The writing style was not enj

Herbjog Wassmo's "The House with the Blind Glass Windows" is a good book but profoundly sad, making it difficult to read.

Her protagonist Tora is living in a very poor fishing village and suffers abuse of every kind imaginable at the hands of her stepfather. Her mother has essentially checked out and Tora suffers in silence.

Much of the book focuses on Tora's inner life and longing to escape. It really rings true and has an honest feel about it. I liked Tora and the writing enough that I will be

The story of this book can turn around stories already told before by several authors, as Tora is a young girl feeling different because her father was a Deutsch soldier and left its marks of grief. Her mother is a part of her wellness, but she works hard and Tora spends many time alone, fearing her drunken stepfather, that abuses her. Tora is a dreamer too, and she alienates from the world that surrounds her by dreaming. The story is filled with a feeling of desolation and bleakness that makes ...more
My absolute favorite book! I'm shocked at how much I appreciated this reading. Although the story is tragic is it so incredibly beautiful. You get remainded of this in the book-
- I love books, because they're tragic. The books are so wonderful.
- But, how can they be so wonderful if they're so tragic?
- They just are.

A very sad book: strong emotions, interesting characters, but the whole story breaks your heart.
Its actually a trilogy, and Ive added the last 2 here, but dont think they are in english, what a shame. Got the books myself, and couldnt stop reading them/it until I was done! I cried and laughed! I almost believed that she had experienced it herself!

The other 2 books is called : Book 2: Det stummee rummet/The silent room Book 3:Hudløs Himmel/Frank sky. Dont know if I've translated them right!

Mexeu imensamente comigo. Acredito que vá impressionar muitos leitores. Neste momento, nem tenho palavras.
A well written book - I could nearly smell the sea and feel the cold wind. Read it in two days although I had some problems with the 'antique' language.
Way too depressive. I kept reading hoping it would get better, but it never did. Just progresses from bad to worse.
