3 stars, almost none of them goes to Stark’s views, but to the book’s reflection of the western mentality toward the Levant in the interwar era, specially the narrow orientalist superiority which shows through Stark’s often offensive sarcasm, the previous thoughts through which Damascus was shallowly described, and her passive/aggressive relation with her hosts in Mount-Lebanon, admiring their simplicity and kindness, yet mocking their attempts to escape their reality into imitating the west. ...more

It was a delight to read Freya Stark's early adventures learning Arabic in Beirut and Damascus as well as wandering among the desert Druze of southern Syria. She was such a good writer with astute and humorous observations of the world. She also had a robust sense of adventure, especially for a single woman in 1928. She's someone I would have liked to invite to dinner.
