Back in the day, friends, Monica was quite the X-File fanatic. An X-Phile, if you will. I had every episode on tape. I had the action figures, and the posters, and window-cling decals. My email address was a subtly-fan-based acronym. And, of course, I owned all the Based On The Hit FOX Television Series books.
I haven’t looked at them in years. Years. So I’m not entirely sure what prompted me to pick Ruins up, but I’m going to blame the fact that I just watched The Last King of Scotland followed...more

There are those who dismiss franchise fiction (things like Star Wars books, Star Trek books, etc) as mere fanservice.
Well, let me tell you something. I'm a fan, and goddamnit, sometimes I need to be serviced. And the only person who knows how to do that right is another fan.
I was intrigued by Ruins, but still a bit skeptical on the face of it. I mean, here was X-files franchise fiction, written by someone whose reputation stemmed from writing Star Wars books. (I've never read a Star Wars book, b...more

This is the fourth X-files book I've read, and the first one I would actually recommend to other people. It was entertaining. K.J.A. really got the Scully and Mulder in this one. The story was vivid in my mind...I could really picture everything, and the Yucatan is a pretty place to picture. I WISH the second X-files film had been something similiar to this one...minus the alien connection. Could you image how infinitely more interesting it would have been exploring the pyramids or some remote a...more
I always enjoyed watching The X-Files growing up, so when I stumbled across this book, I was all-too-happy to get my hands on it.
The book revolves around a case that takes place near the Xitaclan ruins in Mexico. When an archaeological team goes missing, Scully and Mulder are sent to track them down. What follows is a whirlwind of political issues and paranormal - for Mulder, at least. Scully remains a skeptic.

I recently listened to the abridged version of another X-Files novelization called Antibodies and enjoyed it quite a bit (especially the smart dog bits). Ruins, though, just couldn’t hold my attention for any length of time and I found myself doing a lot of rewinding when my mind would wander. Could be the story was a dud or it could be my frame of mind either way I won’t be re-reading this again.

Being a big X-Files fan I thought I'd give this a go. The story took a while to get going but it was an enjoyable book come the end. The story is written much like one of the shows and Kevin J. Anderson does a good job of using Mulder and Scully's personalities into the story. Definately recommended to a fan of the show, those who aren't fans might still find some enjoyment but I would imagine if you didn't like the tv show you most likely wouldn't find as much enjoyment out of this as a fan wou...more
This book would have ranked 4 stars as I enjoyed the journey through very much but several elements of the ending were way too predictable, as well as Anderson's apparent lack of military knowledge (special forces types don't leave dead comrades behind, they don't stand up straight out in the open during a firefight, and, to reduce [destroy] an ancient Mayan-type pyramid, they would detonate explosives inside and underneath it, rather than blasting it from the outside with mortars, which is main...more
I love the X-Files, but I had a hard time getting through this one. It was an entertaining read and I liked that it involved the Maya. That being said, the writing was mediocre at best and it felt like Mulder and Scully were a bit forced. Their names could have been replaced with those from the author's imagination and I doubt I would have been able to tell the difference - sunflower seed references aside, of course :)
Adventure in the jungle, Mulder and Scully style! I was always a sucker for their trip-into-the-woods stories on the show, and this one delivers in style. The familiar Mulder/Scully banter is there, along with a storyline that really keeps you hooked. A nice blend of mystery and adventure, rather like reading an X-Files version of Indiana Jones.
This X-Files adaptation from TV to book works quite well. Reading the books I still get the same kind of sexual tension between Mulder and Scully and the same buzz from their paranormal adventures that I do from the TV episodes. This particular book is not set on an actual X-Files episode but is nonetheless exciting. A team of archaeologists go missing and Mulder and Scully fly to the Yucatan jungle to uncover the reason why. Their exploration leads to a strange electronic signal coming from ben...more

I was a huge X-Files fan about 10-15 years ago!
I read this book at least twice, and probably will read again sometime in the future. The story is thrilling and absorbing (At least that's what I felt when I first read it).

A team of archaeologists go missing in the Yucatan jungle while uncovering the most significant find in Mayan history. Mulder and Scully go to the ancient ruins to find out exactly what happened, where they find much more than they bargained for.
This was a nice quick read, and like all other X-files books, kept me in suspense. It was a little predictable, but overall a good read!

Ok, so this one was better than the other two X-Files novels I've read (Goblins & Whirlwind) probably because of the different author. It had a better story, & lots of suspense. I liked the fact that it wasn't in a domestic environment like the other two; instead, it was in the middle of a jungle which made it creepier in my opinion. However, this guy didn't put as much funny banter between Mulder & Scully like the other guy. There was some, but not near the amount of the other two I...more

It's a fun read. It's like reading an episode that was never made. I am a huge X-Files fan and anyone else that is will enjoy the book.

“Scully,' [Mulder] said, his voice quiet and serious, 'with the... unorthodox explanations I often find when studying the evidence, I know you're always skeptical-but every time you're at least fair to me. You respect my opinion, even when you don't agree with it.' He looked at his hands. 'I don't know if I've ever told you, but I really appreciate that.'
She looked at him and smiled. 'You've told me, Mulder. Maybe not in words... but you've told me.”
