The title's a bit misleading, as these fairytales aren't particularly dark... Most of the tales by the Brothers Grimm are far more sinister. The Stolen Childhood was probably the darkest one, with the wicked stepmother being carted off to hell by the devil at the end, but even that is pretty tame when you compare it to birds pecking out eyes (Cinderella) or dancing to death in red-hot iron shoes (Snow White)...

Dame Carol Ann Duffy, DBE, FRSL is a Scottish poet and playwright. She is Professor of Contemporary Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University, and was appointed Britain's Poet Laureate in May 2009.
