McDaniel's argues that Lao and Thai Buddhist monks were active arbiters in the formation of modern Buddhism through the preservation of an ancient tradition and methodology of instruction--glossing notes inscribed on leaves. Personally, I think McDaniel's does not discuss major issues which would obfuscate his argument, namely, communism and disappearance of monks, rapid deforestation, rapid economic and political change, war, etc. So McDaniel's may be correct in some ways, that the tradition of ...more
