On a warm May night in San Francisco, the Ritz-Carlton ballroom shimmers with crystal and silver as a glittering, celebrity-studded crowd gathers for a charity dinner dance. The evening is perfect–until, just minutes before midnight, the room begins to sway. Glass shatters. And as the lights go out, people begin to scream….

In the earthquake’s aftermath, the lives of four s...more

I am so proud of Derek for going Back to School...but this is how it went...
"Hey, Derek, I'm going to the library. I need a new book on CD for the car."
"Hey, Amanda, I need to study math, so I am going to the library. I will pick out a book for you, baby."
Later, that same day...
"Hey, Amanda. Just got back from the libes. I checked out this book...a Danielle Steel novel."
"Hey, Derek, do you really take me for that kind of girl? ...more

Sarah Sloane is a San Francisco socialite who thinks her life is perfect. She has a husband she loves, 2 children she adores, and they are wealthy. She has put together a charity auction dinner at the Ritz to raise money for the local hospital that saved the life of her older child when the child was born premature. She arranged for Melanie, one of the country's top singers, to donate a performance to add to the glitz of the event. The event is going better than even Sarah's high expectations un...more

I used to really enjoy Danielle Steel. This one felt like she hadn't bothered to develop the dialogue and the books events beyond the outline for the book. At times yes, but large portions were repetitive descriptions of "this is what the book is about." It felt like she maintained an observer mode instead of bringing the reader into the feel of each character.
Perhaps I'm more sensitive to how a book is presented at this point. I write non-fiction but am contemplating doing some ...more

This was my first exposure to this prolific and well known author’s works. I was drawn to this story primarily because of its setting. I was born and raised in Northern California where San Francisco is commonly referred to as “The City”. I have spent many wonderful hours exploring the environs of “Baghdad by the Bay”. Hence I was most familiar with the areas mentioned in this novel.

I was also drawn to the plot of this book. There are four central characters around which this ...more

This story kind of confused me in all honesty in regards to the plot. I thought the majority of the story was going to be based on the earthquake and it ended up being about the aftermath for the majority of the novel. I felt like the characters were a huge random mess of people that would never be together and kinda found the story in my opinion to seem thrown together and scrambeled.

I mean a nun and a recovering alcoholic; a superstar and an average college grad, it just seemed fa...more

Read this on the flight home today from CA - and was typical Danielle Steel. Just to be clear I would NOT have chosen this book - I had nothing else to read, was getting ready for the airport, and saw this laying around the house. This is the 2nd or 3rd Danielle Steel book I have read, and I haven't loved any of the. I do like they take place in SF since I lived there, but everything is a little too neat and tidy. Characters were of course tragically flawed in a perfect way, and all fall in love...more

I wasn't too crazy about this book... picked it up for a bit of fluff reading, and it ended up being just that. A good time waster for when you have nothing else to read, or if you're in the mood for something easy that can be read without too much difficulty in a day or two.

I've read a few Danielle Steel's in the past, and this seems to be her typical style. All her books, this one in particular, seem to follow the exact same formula- only the characters/ settings/ plots are changed...more

Eh...it was what can be expected from a Danielle Steel novel. I call it "brainless reading". I love her character development and imagery and the relationships she forms between characters. I wanted to rate it higher, because it kept my interest and kept me wanting to read more, but I have to compare it to other books...so, a 3. I'll still read her books when I want a break from books with a deeper message and meaning and when I want to sink into the world of Pollyanna without havi...more

Earthquake !!! During a Hospital fundraising event with the famous, young pop star Melanie Free. In the after math Melanie joined with a nun, (Sister Maggie Kent), a world class photographer (Everett Carson) and others to help get everyone to safety. Reuniting hours later in the local shelter to help tend the hurt and comfort the shaken. During it all, Melanie learned a few things about herself, her best friend and her boyfriend. Becoming friends with a nun and helping was just what she...more

I read this book because we were getting ready to move to SF and I had never been there, so I was hungry for any information that I could find about the city, fact or fiction, that would make me feel more familiar with it once I arrived. I am not a typical Danielle Steele fan - not that I don't like her, I just don't choose her books for some reason - too mainstream for my liking I guess. However, I found myself totally engrossed in this story and wondering why I don't read more books by DS. ...more

This is the first Danielle Steel novel I have ever read. I wasn't sure what to expect, and am embarrassed to admit I thought it was some romance-type novel. I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that wasn't the case.

This book was given to me by a friend after she had finished with it. I love to read so much that I decided to go ahead and take it - along with a slew of other books. I'm glad I did. This was a compelling story with many very interesting characters.

I was absolutely amazed at how these characters continued to play a part in each others lives at just the right time. They all bonded because of one night that an earthquake hit. I enjoyed watching all the characters face their conflicts and triumph in impossible situations. Danielle Steel had a way of making these characters so relevant and heartwarming to me. I was actually rooting for certain couples to make it and certain couples to break up.

This book provides very different dynamics. All the characters are vastly different but they are all brought together by one single disaster. Its very realistic, an earthquake in San Francisco, of course. Some characters are people we can relate to, while others are ones most of us only see on tv. But what makes it interesting is watchiung as events unfold. In one couples lives who begin to fall apart, and two couples romances bloom. Adds both positive and negative sides to the story. I don't read much of Danielle Steel, but I can see why people do. She was able to tell four people's stories at the same time, and blend them into each other without too much stretching to the individual plot lines. It did mean that her characters were a little more static and predictable than they might otherwise have been. But that makes for an easier/lighter read anyway. Which is what I read it for.

I haven't read Danielle Steel books in a long time. I wanted some light reading and so I picked up this book by Danielle Steel. I didn't end up finishing the book, just skimming it to the end. The story is just so predictable and not interesting enough and it was too "soft" or "mushy" or hmm i can't even find the right word to describe it. And I don't like the character in this book. I think that's the end of reading Danielle Steel books for me.

I read this book around Jan. of 2009 and it was an OK book. Danielle Steel is one of my absolute favorite authors. I have read better books by her, but this book was an OK read for me!

I thought it was great how the characters (no matter how rich, poor, or whatever class they may have been in...famous or not...) contributed to helping others and each other in some way or another.

I love stories where a tragedy brings a bunch of unlikely people together. In this case it brings a married woman, a nun, a teen popstar and a photographer together in the wake of a major earthquake in San Francisco in 2006. Each gets affected differently and the quake becomes a right of passage. For the married woman a horrible secret about her husband, the nun concerning her vows, the photographer being an alcoholic and a son he hadn't seen in 20+ years, and the teen popstar - finding herse...more

An earthquake hit San Francisco which caused a lot of destruction, loss, despair, trauma for people that changed their lives forever. Some lost their homes, some their lives, some their relatives and friends. For some it was a blessing. Each of the characters possessed an amazing grace- the grace of forgiveness, the grace of humanity, the grace of love.
Amazing book!!!

I think this may be the first Danielle Steel book I have ever read. Not impressed. She kept repeating herself, information you received in the beginning of the book just kept resurfacing...arghh! By the end of the book, I was reading a sentence from each page just trying to get through it. Not a bad story, just very predictable.

This was a really fun read about a current big earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area and how it effected the lives of a number of people. It brought people together that might never have crossed paths had it not been for the earthquake and the chaos it caused. I thoroughly enjoyed it ... another great read from Danielle Steel.

I don't love Steel but my mom does so I read them for her. I actually like the characters this time; a nun, a recovering alcoholic, a teen pop star and her boyfriend, a stay at home mom losing her life because her husband is a financial schemer. An earthquake in San Fransisco brings them all together.
Elaine
The book is related to 4 different people and their stories after an earthquake has hit. Although the storyline is relativity good, there is a LOT of strong language, disrespectful references between mother and daughter, and sexual references. I would not recommend this book to those that don't like this kind of content in the book.

Another great book by DS that you know will have a happy ending....-getting there is always the best part. I am finding her recent books have a message and this one does too. It follows the lives of a handful of people who survive a bad earthquake in San Francisco and how each is affected. The message is that helping others makes you feel better......thoroughly enjoyed this.

I hadn't read Danielle Steel in a while and this was very good. From the earthquake to how each of the lives intertwine. The characters were very amazing, interesting. They made you want to read and get to know them more. My heart went out to Sarah and the children. I would recommend this book. Wish there were more caring people in the world like Maggie,Melanie,Tom.

Okay. Don't beat me up for reading Danielle Steel, but after a Long Way Gone, Virgin Suicides and Into the Wild, I needed something light. I read this in a day and I must admit it was just tooooooooooo sappy for me. Forgive me bookclub! ;)

It's been years since I even thought of reading a Danielle Steele novel, and now I remember why. The setting of this one was so appealing because I've visited many of the places, The Presidio, Crissy Field, the Marina...but after half a dozen "F" words, it could have taken place in my own backyard and I wouldn't finish it. Besides, quite frankly, it was boring and her writing isn't that great, so what's the point?
Capergirl
It's a typical slightly cheesy Danielle Steel novel. I give it props for not going with the typical love story... but I didn't find it really taxed my mind all that much. I also didn't end up feeling too much for the characters.

I just wrote a short review on Testing Your IQ, well, reading this book lowered my IQ! At least the small portion I read. I used to read her books when I was a teenager and thought I'd give her another try since I loved her books back then. I loved them because I was a kid! Reading the first chapter of this book left me longing to read the dictionary to regain the few brain cells I lost while reading this book. I know this review sounds quite harsh, but her writing style (and plot for that ...more

Since 1981, Ms. Steel has been a permanent fixture on the New York Times hardcover and paperback bestseller lists. In 1989, she was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having at least one of her books on the Times bestseller list for 381 consecutive weeks. But Guinness was premature. The fact is that one or more of Ms. Steel's novels have been on the New York Times bestseller list for...more
