I almost gave this book three stars (or less) because of the ending. I was disgusted with Agatha Christie's cleverness. Up until the last couple of chapters, she strung me along, had me guessing, had me re-reading previous chapters to double-check facts. And them BAM! the last couple of chapters just made me cringe. I won't spoil the ending or what frustrated me so thoroughly.

Just finished a re-read of this classic. I remember the first time I read it, the twist at the end knocked my socks off! My second thought was: "Agatha Christie understands the mind of evil in a way that is a little frightening!"
This time through, I remembered how it turns out (which is not always the case!), and was able to watch the clues with the murderer in mind. An astonishingly masterful piece of work.
Many consider this novel to be Agatha Christie's best, More...

Defending Agatha Christie
A dear friend of mine is no fan of Agatha Christie (1890-1976). He and I are both delighted by Dorothy Sayers (1893-1957) and her creation Lord Peter Wimsey. We have discussed them for many years. But the charm of Dame Agatha and her most famous detective, Hercule Poirot, eludes him. This defense is to present what I have come to like in Agatha Christie's mystery books. More...

Despite her death, Agatha Christie rolls on. I've read so many of her mysteries that it only seems fair to review one or two, so I chose "Roger Ackroyd" because of its tour-de-force nature. Let's face it: if you like Agatha Christie, you really love her, and if you read a couple of the books and they don't turn you on, then there's not much point in your reading more.
They're quick reads, however, and it shouldn't take more than a weekend in an ancestral mansion completely i More...

Most of Dame Christie's works are a touch too "gentle" for me at this point in my life. I see her work as more appropriate for high schoolers, young adults, although it also is excellent reading for vacations, on air planes, before sleeping.
Even given that, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is one of the books in 1001 Books to Read Before you Die...and it should be. To give an analogy that most folks would understand: This story would be at home as an episode of Law and Order. Se More...

Perhaps the best and certainly one of the most notorious mysteries of all time, Ackroyd is my favorite of them all. A truly twisted denouement of the plot stirred controversy and earned this book a well-deserved outstanding reputation. Although I've read Ackroyd at least 12 times over the last 40 years, it still charms me. When you know the plot resolution, you can enjoy the hints, the characters, and the setting. The characters are unusually well-developed for a Christie book. A+ for this outin

I really didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. I mean, I like crime/mystery fiction, especially as something to take a break from literature or heart-breaking stuff (Guy Gavriel Kay, I'm looking at you). But I didn't expect to like Agatha Christie's writing so much. This first exposure to her work is due to my Crime Fiction class, which now I'm really excited about, and I'm probably going to look out for more.

I had to read this book as part of my Detective Fiction university English course. It was the first Agatha Christie book I've read. I thought the plot was fascinating but found Christie's writing boring without atmosphere. I knew I had to read this book by a certain date but boy did I have problems even getting past ten pages. On the last night I read 230 pages because I knew I had to finish it for my course. The writing is really dull and boring. I understand why the lecturer included a Christi

This is my favorite Agatha Christie novel. Don't ask why - I can't say without spoiling it. Just read it.
Sad to say, I think I've read almost every novel Dame Agatha wrote. Most when I was in high school. They are trashy, full of stereotypes, irritatingly formulaic, and ... damn her if she doesn't surprise me every time!
I've even been surprised upon rereading her books, having forgotten whodunnit, and getting sucked into her tissue of lies again. But some you never forge More...

I started reading Agatha Christie in the 7th grade. It was the first time I sought out books based on the author rather than based on the title. She is the only author I collect and have most of her books that have been reprinted at all. I re-read them as an adult still with perfect enjoyment. I know she's not perfect--you can find flawed reasoning and she even writes things that are downright silly. But somehow she weaves a tale so cleverly that you still care about the characters and belie

Roger Ackroyd was an extremely wealthy old man, who's always been a bit tight with his money. But since his friend Mrs Ferrars died at the weekend[return](poisoning - committed suicide) he's been very edgy, as if someone was out to get him. The next day he was dead, and the police are convinced they know[return]who did it, Mr Ackroyd's stepson who disappeared that same night. But fiance of the suspected stepson is convinced he didn't do it, and enlists the aid of Hercule Poirot, who has come to

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was a book that I really enjoyed. Although I have read other mystery books, Agatha Christie used great analytical stimulation and really captured my attention. The one thing that I loved about this story was how King Abbot the town where most single ladies and retired military men lived became a town known as the town of Gossip. I felt like with a town full of ladies and single at that there must have not have been much to do but gossip. I mean with a town so small ev

I shall remember this book as the one that finally put me off the Hercule Poirot mysteries. Oh, how i hate that snobbish, proud ba*****! Well, it's only because i turn out to be even more proud than he is, because this is the first and the only Christie novel where i was able to catch the murderer before even Poirot did! Ha Ha Ha (laughing proudly).. Now i need not put up with his "no one escape Hercule Poirot" kinda Bollywood dialogues.

In a book club we are reading the entire Christie mystery library. This is the 7th novel and the 3rd featuring Hercule Poirot (it will take well over a decade for the club to complete its goal). And in my opinion this is the best so far. Yes, her formula remains rather predictable, but on first read predicting who-dunnit before the final chapters is pretty difficult. So, formulaic, yes, but still fun late-night reads. There is no need to read Christie’s works in chronological order, so this is a

I'm so disappointed with the ending- so very, very disappointed! Honestly, isn't there a law against such endings?
I had no idea it was them. I was strung along, fed little red herrings here and there, and just when I thought I had figured it all out, Christie slaps me across the face with the real murderer. But the clues had been there all along- only I had failed to pick them up because of technicalities! Christie/Poirot has outsmarted me once again.

Of all the Agatha Christie books I've read--of all the mystery books I've read, there are three with such jaw-dropping resolutions that you want to scream, "I don't believe she did that!" One is And Then There Were None, another is Murder on the Orient Express and the third is The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Of the three, this is the one I was tempted to read again immediately upon finishing to make sure Christie played fair--she did. One thing that struck me on reread was not only how sm

Ahhh, the infamous Roger Ackroyd! Christie got ENORMOUS press for her plotting in this one, and a lot of it was NOT good - loads of her regular fans were really PO'd at her for using a twist that "nice" mystery writers of the day (mid-1920s) didn't use. There was even a list of the "Don't" things for a writer including her particular hook in this book, and her flouting that convention angered many other writers (and readers) who felt she didn't "play fair". But the

There's nothing like a classic -- they are classics for a reason. Kobo books is offering Agatha Christie novels at under $5 from Harper Collins which is as good an excuse as any to dip into The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, the second of Hercule Poirot's appearances. (The first is The Mysterious Affair at Styles which is in public domain.) This is one of the charms of growing older and the mind -- shall we be generous and say its ability to be selectively forgetful? -- providing the opportunity to re

I haven't read an Agatha Christie since high school, not counting one lazy day at work two years ago when I hastily read through The Mysterious Affair at Styles. In any case, I haven't read as many of her books as I could have, given her popularity with those around me. I was looking for a light read and the much talked about twist in this book piqued my curiosity, as did its apparent position as one of the most influential crime novels.

I read the novel slowly and carefully, noting all the clues, determined to work out whodunnit and how. I had my eye on the culprit from very early on but, despite some early clues, was unable to pick out the clincher.
