Not for the faint of heart, I found this collection of essays to be at times gripping and at others mind-numbingly dull. I'd hoped to find more here on gender variance and deviation from gender norms in ancient Greece and Rome. Instead I found a wholly conventional approach to the subject of gender, with the lion's share of attention given to the problem of the absence of women's voices in the first person among the remaining cultural artifacts.
