This is not the type of book I would usually pick up, but I read Maureen Johnson's blog and love it so much that I had to read one of her books. My library only had Devilish so I thought I would give it a shot. Well, I started last night and finished before lunch today. It was an excellent light read-- plot was good and captivating, I could relate to the main character (though perhaps not her situation ;)) and the Maureen Johnson humour that I love in her blog shone through. Definitely recommend...more
It took me a little while to get into the meat of this book, but once I did, it had me hooked.
Jane's best friend Allison is acting strangely. Once a meek and geeky girl, Allison has transformed into a sleek, stylish, self-assured senior. And she's dating Jane's ex! Something dark is afoot in Providence and Jane is going to figure it out.
Jane, as the main character, could have been more defined. We only see her surface for most of the story, and while she is depicted a...more

This book's setting is a fictionalized version of my mom's high school (she and the author went to the same school! Tho many, many years apart.) Will definitely have to get around to it some day soon.

I loved this book. I borrowed it from the library but have since purchased it so I can make notes in the margins. I am a writer myself so I like to study great works of literature. In my opinion this is one of them. I was skeptical when I heard people say such things as "I couldn't put it down." because we all know, everyone says that. I'm not a stay-up-late-to-find-out-the-ending type of person but with this book, I just couldn't stop. It has a wonderful plot that keeps you in suspens...more
I have to admit something to all of you. When I first picked this book up from my pile of award nominees I had very low expectations for it. I thought it was going to be terrible. I really did. I'm not sure why I thought this. Perhaps it had to do with the cover, which, while perfectly fitting for the story itself, would never have grabbed my interest in the book store--not in a million years. This has a lot to do with the fact that the story is more aimed, in my opinion, towards teenage girls. ...more
I was introduced to DEVILISH by a certain someone. The day I saw that tweet she made, thunder sounded in the distance and I got shocked by current while baking cookies. I suppose I should have seen the signs then, but what do they say about cookies?
Join the dark side, we have em. ;)
It is charming, funny and what I liked best was that it didn't take itself too seriously. This is due to Jane's outlook. At first glance, she's like one of those scientists that everyone talks abo...more

This was the first book that I have ever read by Maureen Johnson. I have been wanting to get my hands on one for quite a while. I am really glad that I liked it. I have been following Maureen Johnson on Twitter for quite a while, and the kind of fun and quirky person that she is really shows through in her writing. I really enjoyed this book, and I definitely want to read more by her.

This book was totally not what I expected but I really liked it.
When I sat down to read it I was ready for a very different type of book then it actually was. I've read other books by Maureen Johnson and I hadn't read the summary on the back. I thought it would be a girly romance type book without anything paranormal. So, the demon/devil character was a surprise for me.

I follow Maureen Johnson in Twitter & enjoy her posts immensely; I've been meaning to read one of her books for ages but had had trouble tracking them down. (Possibly because I was only looking in Borders, which hadn't at that time restocked since sometime last year - I had a voucher, OK?!).
Initially I was worried she would be one of those authors I think is a brilliant person but who's writing isn't my cup of tea (see also Val McDermid). The start was kind of over the top and didn't m...more

Don't you crave cupcakes just looking at this cover? I know I do. Devilish is a paranormal YA novel that avoids being teeny-bopperish by a dark mood and a rather sophisticated writing style.
The protagonist, Jane, is a bright but troubled student at a parochial school for girls. She's always looking out for her slower-and-less-popular friend Allison, until the day when Allison suddenly doesn't need her help anymore. Jane feels perplexed, then alarmed by all the changes happening in All...more

SO! I know i've been terrible about updating this summer, and for that, i apologise. I've been crazy busy lately, i start college in three weeks and this whole summer has been preparing for it and such.
Anyway, let's get this rolling, shall we?
Maureen Johnson, can i start with her? And talk about how it's my life goal to be like her when i grow up? (except my books will be fantasy books ;) If i turn out a fraction as awesome as her, then i'll be happy. Not only is she a nerdfighter, she...more

This book was GOOD, and I do mean it.
Compared to other books that include teenagers that made bargains with the devil this one stood out by a lot.
Jane is a character most/all girls can relate too, so that's good because she wasn't some kind of alien girl that was completely different from people you might know.
The way Jane's friend threw up on the cupcake and ended up turning the whole story in the direction it was supposed to go rather impressed me. It's not ...more

I felt that this book was much more aimed at teenage girls than many of the "YA" writers that I typically read. In the end I did end up enjoying this book, however party because I felt it was aimed at someone younger than myself, it took me a while to get into this book. (Which isn't actually a bad thing, as it is a YA book.) I am ok with the premise of a book being a bit out there if the story behind it makes it believable. I felt as if this story needed just a bit more to make the pr...more
After too-smart-for-her-own-good Jane’s best friend Allison humiliates herself at their all-girl school’s Big-Little event, the Allison Jane knows disappears. All of a sudden Allison has cute clothes, a new hairstyle, and a trendy cell phone. She’s also hanging out with a new sophomore, Lanalee. With their friendship teetering, Jane finds out, with the help of a freshman boy, that Allison has sold her soul to the devil, who is masquerading as a—you guessed it—sophomore at Saint Teresa’s.

From the beginning, I have shied away from the YA shelves, mostly based on Twilight (which I enjoyed but didn’t love) and one failed attempt at reading a Sarah Dessen book. I don’t like vampires, I don’t like demons and I am really quite a few years past angst. Also, for the most part, I don’t really like love stories. In books, they’re too easy (or too hard due to aforementioned demons). In YA stories, the young women are painted as girls as opposed to strong people and I just don’t think that ...more

Summary: Seniors Jane and Allison aren’t popular, but they have each other. When Allison makes a dangerous deal to gain a little popularity, can Jane save her?
Review: This was the first book I read after my month-long Harry Potter revival, so I sort of expected to be let down. But this is Maureen Johnson, so I should have known better.

It all started with a cupcake...
Well, not really. It started at prom night, when Alison's date never came. Stood up by a guy off the internet, the shame! And then Jane's boyfriend of just over seven months broke up with her and started ignoring her even as a friend. And then the cupcake. And Ally's puke all over the freshman. And then Ally's new haircut. And then Jane found out that her best-and-only friend was dating her ex, but also had sold her soul to the devil.

Again, this was a book I just pulled off the library shelves because I needed a book to read. I'm beginning to think I should do it more often. I'm finding some great books that way. Anyway, I'd seen this one a number of times, and Maureen Johnson's a good writer. I couldn't really turn it down (when I didn't have any other books in my hands).

Oh, it was a while ago when I read this book. I'm talking years ago, but I do remember what happened and why I didn't like it as much as MJ's other books. I'm pretty sure that it's because it lacked the overall MJ-ness of it all. That special spark that's in all of her books, and I think it was missing because it's written in first-person. I mean, I loved her story in Let It Snow, but I just didn't like this narration that well. Jane is a likable character (all of them are actually), but when it...more

Johnson’s section of Let It Snow made me want to check out more of her work; this particular book may not have been the right choice as, though it’s well-written, it suffers from a rather weak plot. Smart, rebellious Catholic schoolgirl Jane is (naturally) shocked to discover that her best friend, socially awkward Ally, has sold her soul to a demon. Sub-par Scoobying ensues. Johnson’s—I feel pretentious using this word, but okay, her mythology seems very poorly thought out. The rules of her univ...more
Devilish tells the story of Jane Jarvis, a short, spunky, peternaturally smart teenage girl trapped in a stifling all-girls Catholic school where nothing is quite what it seems. Jane's best friend is Allison Concord, earnest, average and moderately spastic. One day Allison shows up to class completely changed in appearance and behavior. Gone is Jane's charmingly odd, frizzy-haired best friend; in her place is a composed, beautiful young woman. But there is something sinister behind Allison's...more

Like Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, this was a VERY QUICK read. It is the story of Jane and Allison, two seniors in high school, who although not particularly popular, have always been best friends. Then Allison changes and much to Jane's incredulity at first, Jane finally realizes that Allison has sold her soul to a high school demon who loves to make cupcakes. Allison trades her soul for some cute new clothes and ...more

12/1/08--In the book Devilish, by Maureen Johnson, Jane has to save her best friend Ally from a demon who is pretending to be Ally's best friend. Lanalee, the demon, comes to the private, allgirl, Catholic school that Jane and Ally go to and becomes Ally's "little". Everything seems to be great untill Ally comes to school looking completely different; she has cut her hair into a short, firey red bob. Her wardrobe is completely different and she seems to have more confidence than Jan...more
Okay, before I start this review, I want to make something clear: I am in no way against Young Adult fiction. In fact, some of my favourite novels fall into that category. But I can’t exactly say that this one is the crème de la crème. It’s not that it was incredibly bad, it just wasn’t incredibly good, either.
First off, I’m all for the demon-possessing-someone’s-soul sort of novel. I used to be – and still am, to an extent – a huge fantasy fan, but a cupcake-eating demon known as eith...more

This book was very interesting, and had some very weird twists at the end (at the point when Owen kills himself, i was like, "WTF?") and was hard to follow sometimes. Also weird how the main character has spikes. Did like Brother Frank. Catholic schools, none that I know of, have to weard saddle shoes or long sleeves. This is a stereotype. Plaid, yes, obviously you have to wear. But no to the shoes and sleeves and vest, etc. And of the school is taht strict about their uniform, they'd ...more
