Well-researched, thought provoking book on the development of the mawlid overtime in Sunni Islam. Katz also makes interesting points on how the Prophet Muhammad was seen in the pre-modern vs. modern times among his followers.

This book is one of the most comprehensive academic studies of the mawlid, the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. Katz has obviously spent years researching this book - she cites hundreds, if not thousands, of sources since the Fatimid dynasty to document the way Muslims have understood, spoken, and written about the mawlid over the past few hundred years.
