Raiders Night
The pressure is on.
At Nearmont High School, football stars are treated like royalty, and Matt Rydek has just ascended to the throne. As co-captain of the Raiders, he's got it all, or so it seems: hot girls, all the right friends, plenty of juice to make him strong, and a winning team poised to go all the way. If he can keep his eye on the ball now, his future will be set,...more

I have no problem with sports fiction books; it has absolutely no bearing on my rating.
What's disappointing is that this book presents no point. It uses an extremely intense subject, but goes absolutely no where with it. The boys suffer no consequences, whether it be from their drugs, the rape, or any other heinous thing they did (I'm not trying to suggest that justice is the only acceptable outcome for this book, but at least one that would have served some purpose). The only one who suffers w...more

First off, I am not much for sports fiction books...particularly books about football (although I will read as much baseball non-fiction as I can get my hands on). However, after choosing this book for the YA Lit course I teach at the University of Delaware, I have to say that I was quite impressed with Lipsyte's book, and with his no holds barred critical look at high school football culture, and what that culture can sometimes do to teens, and the institutions that are supposedly there to help...more
In the book “Raiders Night” the author Robert Lipsyte explains how leadership and commitment can take you a long way in life. This story is about a football team striving for glory and facing many challenges on the way. The main character of this book is a boy named Matt who is the captain of the football team. The football team in this book is just like any other high school football team. They all go through the same practicing and weight lifting schedules as we do at our school for football....more
Night raiders- Raiders football is looking to have a great season with the co-captain Matt rydek & his pals who try to be the best and out do themselves everyday...maybe a little to much, but they look to them to lead them to a big championship state win this season ,but there are some faults no one sees coming during this season of the Raiders supposed big title win. Can they win the battle of the hardships they have coming toward them though? Having to deal taking drugs, rape and plenty othe...more
Raiders Night was a tremendous book. Raiders Night is based on a public High school's football team named the Raiders. Matt Rydek the main character in the book is the teams captain, serving his senior year. Matt and a few of his friends thrived every day to be a better player for the team, by doing so most of the guys on the team including Matt took steriods, and Viconin. With most the boys fit, and popular they would always go to parties after games and get all the ladies. During the start of...more
From beginning to end this book kept me turning page after page again and again. Robert Lipstye did an excellent job in bringing to life the kind of things that go on inside the locker room. In this book the main character Matt Rydek, plays on the varsity football team at Nearmont High. There, football players are treated like royalty. Especially Matt, who also happens to be one of the captains. Throughout this book Robert Lipstye throws in twists and turns that you could never see coming. The b...more
Raider's Night is a book that takes place in a town that cares very much about it's high school football program. One of the captains of the team, Matt Rydek, struggles throughout the book as a leader as he must balance what is good for the team and what is the right thing to do. Something shocking happens at the training camp one summer, and turns his life upside down. One thing I learned from this book, is how hard decisionmaking can be. life often seems like the right choice is always easy. B...more

Books for Boys: "Raiders Night" by Robert Lipsyte
At the school where I teach, football reigns supreme among all student activities. I often wander about the locker room culture and other secrets of the gridiron female teachers know little about. Raiders Night by Robert Lipsyte offers a glimpse into the jock culture prevalent in many schools.

Wow. This book was heavy. A novel with swears, steroids, and sodomy. A nice up front warning: there are no redeemable characters and the characters who choose to act only choose too late. Is such a bleak novel worth reading? In this case yes! Lipsyte's work paints a frighteningly realistic depiction of a football focused town that is willing to keep terrible things quite just to keep the team winning. Weighing personal futures against others' presents becomes a serious issue when not all charact...more
Overall, this book is pretty well written. The author presents very interesting topics like the use of steroids, hazing, and adult behaviorn in the situations. The main character is Matt Rydek who is a football star at his school. He is later faced with a problem of whether to tell anyone about a new player, (Chris Marin) being sexually assaulted at a football camp they went to. To most, it would seem like the the decision would be simple. But the problem is, if he tells anyone about the inciden...more

Raiders Night by Robert Lipsyte focuses on a nearmont high school football team. The main characters are Matt, Chris, and Ramp and they are under pressure for what had happen at camp and at home. Some people would say “it’s based on a real story.”
At nearmont High school, there’s a football team name the “Raiders.” The team’s captain is Matt Rydek and Matt is a wide receiver and a part time cornerback on defenses. Matt’s dad Mr. Rydek is a softball coach who wants Matt to play foot...more

Not the topics I would normally want to read about, and it was difficult to read much of the book, but this is one of those books that could be THE one that gets a kid who has never read anything, to read. Full of issues surrounding a high profile high school football team where everyone is vying for an athletic college scholarship, including corrupt adults, steroid use, hazing and more. I actually gasped out loud I was so shocked by one scene in the book, shocked that the character would do wha...more
Raiders Night is an excellent story about a high school football star facing a moral dilemma after a violent hazing incident in the locker room. Conflict and tension build from the first page to the last. Still, I didn’t like the author’s voice, and I doubt I’ll read another of his novels. There was too much telling instead of showing – sometimes page upon page of narrative without any scenes. The dialogue was bland and uninteresting. Characterization was weak (other than the protagonist who was...more

Funny that I should finish this book this week. It was as riveting as promised. The razing scene was horrific, and the language and casual sex were off-putting. Had this been any other author, I wouldn't have finished it, but I'm glad I did. This was more than about the inaction of Matt, the protagonist. It was about the complicity of adults in covering a crime where a child was sodomized. The extras at the end of the book provide readers with insight into Lipsyte's intentions, research, and par...more
This book was a good take on a high school football team. The main character Matt struggles doing whats right for the good of the team and what is right in general. In the book their is a graphic event were someone of the team is sexually assaulted by another teammate and Matt sees it happen. He doesn`t know what to do and struggles with who his friends and enemies are. Throughout the book Matt and many other players on the team experiment with "juice" or steroids with goal of becoming big. This...more

The captains are trying to find a way to keep it from the coaches and the press, because they don’t want to ruin there football program and chances of players getting scholarship. So far i think this book is very good because it relates to me a lot. This book is about a high school football team and i just got done playing my senior year of football. This book is very interesting and really fun to read because all of the stuff that is involved in it. In this book they talk about the players taking pain pills and using steriods. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes football and likes reading about it. They always talk about all the players partying all the time...more
I picked up this little book yesterday when I felt that I needed to relax a bit at school. It's been on my to-read list since before it was published. I'm a big fan of the author's The Contender and his newest title Yellow Flag. Lipsyte pushes the edge in this one, making it for older high school students.[return][return]Matt Rydek is co-captain of the Nearmont Raiders football team, one of the studs of the school, and treated well. Cops, teachers, students, and especially girls, love him. But M...more

Matt Rydek has just about everything going for him, as he gets ready for his senior year. He s co-captain of the Raiders, Nearmont High s football team. Well actually Matt would rather be playing baseball, but Matt s dad says there are more scholarships for football players, and what his dad says goes. Matt s got a tight group of friends from the team, the Back Pack, hot girls and the possibility of a scholarship to a Division One school that will get him away from his father. He also has pl...more
This book, I think, was very interesting. I am currently in high school and could relate to the steroids part of this book in a powerful way. One of the questions you come with before you read this book is what are steroids and why do people really do them? After reading this book you can come out with the answers and more. The story goes deep into the minds of young adults and shows what they are capable of doing. Showing the readers that a simple and mean action can lead to something enormous.
My, my, my. There are football coaches who do not want this book in the library!! A football team participates in a hazing of a new player at summer camp and then, tries to cover up. Not all that far from the truth....check your news. One team member decides to 'fess up and all heck breaks loose. This book touches bullying, lying, athletes getting preferential treatment, etc. Lypsyte pulls no punches and there is some realistic violence involved. Much to think about here.

after reading this book i thought that the begining of it was very slow and booring it didnt have much storyline. It seemed like you were just reading about a highschool football players taking steroids. until about halfway through the story Lipsyte started creating problems that the main charactor Matt had to try and solve. Matt had the choice of doing whats right for the team or what the right thing to do is. the conflicts that the author creats gives the story meaning.
This book was suggested to me by a high school teacher, despite the fact that it is no where near one of my favored genres. However, the SPORTS aspect of this book has almost nothing to do with what I disliked about this book. It was outrageous and graphic, not to mention I felt as if it was all that for nothing. I learned nothing, and the only emotion I felt through out the whole book was disgust and pity. Not sure what the Author was getting at with this book..
Matt Rydek is co-captain of the Nearmont Raiders, a hard-driving wide receiver whose father has him targeted for the NFL via steroids, workouts, and endless promotion. At the end of training camp on Raider Pride Night the captains rule the freshmen and the new player is targeted by Matt's co-captain in an event so intense it threatens to ruin the Raiders' anticipated championship series and maybe even the Raiders themselves.
Interesting story, took me back to high school in some ways. Unfortunately for me, it was written in far too much of the jock's point of view. What I mean is that a jock would probably love and relate to the main character, but to me, it was frustrating listening to such a meathead the whole time, even if he maybe was ultimately redeemed at the end.
A rather daring YA novel about football pride gone too far. This book would definitely appeal to boys, yet the sexual content (some of the boys rape one of their teammates during a "pride night") and subsequent cover up, might be too much for many boys to handle. I have mixed feelings about this book.
For me this book was a struggle. It's just not a story I enjoyed and often times I was annoyed with characters. It's filled with ego driven male characters and very flat, one dimensional females. I do see how the book could appeal to someone who enjoys a drama filled sports book but it's just not the book for me.
It is the first sports fiction book that I have read. I thought I was gonna get all bored with it. It was pretty okay for me. I actually don't watch a lot of football but I love watching movies that involves it. The story is, I can say, pretty typical. Yes, everything is manly too. Though I don't think I had problems with this book. Its something that was just okay to read.
