You'll Like This Film Because You're in It: The Be Kind Rewind Protocol
A how-to book from a famed director! This little paperback by Michel Gondry was inspired by his latest film, Be Kind Rewind. The movie stars Jack Black and Mos Def as two friends who enact lo-fi versions of popular Hollywood films such as Ghostbusters or Robocop and offer them for rental. They call this reappropriative and participatory practice "sweding," which is to say, ...more

Michel Gondry and I both experimented with deterministic methods for instant filmmaking with amateurs, and we both wrote about it. But Gondry is a far more talented director that I am, and his book is thicker than mine. He also has an interesting use of English -- he's French, and in person his accent can be indecipherable, but he's really eloquent and interleaves his personal and professional views in a charming and insightful way. He's funny, yet deep. As am I. But his book is thicker than min ...more
As a filmmaker and someone who has participated in several collaborative "fast movie" projects in which amateurs get together and democratically craft a film really quickly, this book was a great confirmation of some basic dreams and desires and experiences that I've had. Michel Gondry is a genius, dreamer, and auteur, as we all know from his videos and films, but surprise-surprise, he's also an anti-corporate, anti-capitalist, utopian collectivist, and he's come up with a great, simple system f ...more
i liked this book a lot. it explores Michel Gondry's development of a utopian communal filmmaking protocol, inspired by his film BE KIND REWIND. Describing the storyline development part of the process he says, "It's a mix between an exquisite corpse and Scrabble*" which is as good an explanation of the entire protocol as any. It's a slight book, only 80 pages, but it does get one thinking about collaboration, working outside commercial restraint and the creative process.

A really fascinating attempt at creating content by the people for the people by Gondy. I would love to see something like his installation set-up find its way into cities across the country, it would be great to see kids get involved in something like this. I also love his rules and how they get rid of inhibitions and help steamroll any hesitation on anyone's part to participate. Really worth checking out.
This book was really sweet and funny. Aside for the fact that Michel Gondry signed the book at the NY Art Book Fair, he also drew a picture of my girlfriend as I described her, plus he drew her naked, plus he then drew me ejaculating all over her. Then he wrote in her name. Don't let that discourage you from reading this book. It is entirely wholesome and if more people would be as creative as Michel Gondry then we would have more funny, sweet books like this one.
