Mary-Margaret yearned to dedicate her life to the Lord. Jesus had another idea.

When Mary-Margaret Fischer met Jude Keller, the lighthouse keeper's son, she was studying at a convent school on a small island off Chesapeake Bay. Destined for a life as a religious sister, she nevertheless felt a pull toward Jude--gorgeous, rebellious, promiscuous Jude. But Jude, driven by dem...more

Even though a product of rape, Mary-Margaret Fischer always felt the presence of God. Being raised with the Sisters of Abbeyville MD- just off the Chesapeake Bay- she determined at a young age to devote her life to God. Lamentable Jude Keller tempted her sorely though. The handsome Jude is a tortured soul and Mary-Margaret has no idea the source of his pain, but when he leaves the island for the red-light district of Baltimore she moves on too, helping to start a school for the orphaned children...more

This is not an easy read due to heavy subject matter. Theologically I am not sure I agree with some of the things Mary-Margaret believed either. But I felt the passion of the character to love and that is what kept me reading. Lisa Samson has penned a very deep, provocative, and though-provoking novel that will make you think about many, many things you may not have considered before. Also, there are so many layers to things that we never see. Most of us only see the surface, but don't take the...more

I found this book by chance at Barnes and Noble one night when after having a bad day (well, June was just an awful month, really), I escaped to the book store looking for Maggie, the sequel to Charles Martin's The Dead Don't Dance. I had just finished the book and just had to read the sequel (amazon prime couldn't deliver it fast enough). :)

Of course, B and N didn't have the Martin book...so I was perusing the Christian fiction area and saw the book Bella. Now, I have seen the movie (loved it)...more

I'll be honest, I was skeptical about this book right from the start. While it hooked me--intrigued me enough to keep reading--I wasn't sure I was liking what I was reading. It had this other-ness to it. This off-putting (to me) flavor where I wasn't quite sure what to think of it, what to make of it. It is a roughly told story that is all-a-scramble. Within a chapter, the narrator might have touched upon four different years with little or no transition. She might be seven, fifteen, forty-two,...more

I adored this book.

Why?

* It reminded me of Marilynn Robinson's Gilead.
* The voicing of Mary-Margaret and each character was completely distinct and beautiful.
* Though not necessarily a suspenseful book, I couldn't wait to turn the page.
* The language was stunning. Sometimes I would read a sentence, then put the book down, wondering how Lisa could conjure up such beauty. Her words took my breath away.
* The story was redemptive, surprising, and invitational.
* The way Lisa wove the story stunned me...more

In her book, The Passion of Mary-Margaret, author Lisa Samson tells an entertaining, uplifting, and encouraging story where the gifts of the Spirit are manifested by the main characters as they lead us to a better understanding of Jesus' Divine Mercy.

The book cover shows a picture of a lighthouse in the background and a religious sister holding a wooden rosary in her left hand, dressed on a white jacket and skirt set. The sky is blue, the sun is shining, and the grass is bright green. These sym...more

The saving grace about this book are the characters -- they are compelling, they are unique, and they have a history that seems incredibly real and tangible. The ideas the story is built around are great as well, especially the theme that what God actually asks us to do is sometimes not what we think God should be asking a nice, neat Catholic girl to do. The characters in the book all interact with their faith in very different ways, and it makes for a great tapestry in that. All that, and the s...more

If I had not recently met the most interesting ex-nun, I would never have read this book, and that would have been a shame. Normally, I never would have picked up a book advertised as "Christian," mostly because the ones I've tried have been tedioius in the extreme, not to mention smarmily, brainlessly "God is blameless, and so is anyone who claims to work for God!"

The Passion of Mary-Margaret isn't like that at all. It's set up as a memoir, of sorts, with the premise that one of the Catholic s...more

I've long been a fan of Lisa's writing--her quirky characters, everyday situations that capture the imagination with stellar writing that takes you off ordinary paths into lesser explored territories of the holy and the righteous.

The Passion of Mary-Margaret is no exception. As a matter of fact, this may be her best novel so far. Written in a stream-of-consciousness style, the present day account of Sister Mary-Margaret mingles seamlessly with her childhood, her journey of faith, and dedication...more

Sister Mary-Margaret Fischer is writing down her life story for the benefit of those who follow. She’s doing it unwillingly, because, as she says, “I think anonymity in serving God is crucial to the devout life.” Plus, she isn’t eager to make the more intimate details of her past known. And no wonder, since she has seen some extremely harsh things from a very personal vantage point, and has survived some experiences that are completely foreign to her beloved Sisters.

As with her novel, Embrace M...more

I really, really enjoyed this story of a religious sister (not a nun, but most of the people she meets are confused about the distinction, so don't let it bother you). She is persuaded to write her life's story, and it is sometimes rambling and jumps from past to present to farther past. Since she is supposedly 70 years old when she is writing this, it's not really surprising. It made it feel more authentic to me. I loved the main character, who is neither pious nor hypocritically self-righteous...more

OK, I literally just grabbed this book because it was next to the check-out at the library. I didn't know what it was about, but the cover intrigued me. I almost stopped reading it a couple of times just because of the jumping around from present to past to something else in the past, etc... I had a hard time keeping up with the retrospective journalistic style, which is a real shame, because the middle to end of the book was exceptional. This is Christian fiction, and I am sure most people (chr...more

I read this book for a work genre study. I don't normally pick up Christian Fiction on my own so this was a nice way to expose me to a book outside my comfort zone.

The characters are what made this book interesting for me. I didn't find the subject matter compelling but the characters came alive in their descriptions and their faith. Mary-Margaret was spunky and likeable and Jude, while tortured, was easy to be drawn to.

The one major gripe I had with this book was the timeline. I realize that it...more

Like all of Lisa Samson's other books, I really enjoyed it. It took me a little while to get into the beginning. Not sure if it was the book or me. By the time I was halfway though, I was hooked. One thing that I really appreciate in her writing is her character development. She is not at all afraid to write about characters that have a far from perfect life. There are some sensitive topics within this book (sexual abuse, promiscuity, drugs, and even talking about sex within the context of marri...more

I really loved this book. And I think that were Sister Mary-Margaret real we would have been friends. Or I would have wanted to be friends with her! I'm finding it hard to put into words why I loved this book. I loved the way Samson wrote it, I loved the story, I loved the way grace was weaved throughout, I loved MM's relationship with Jesus, I loved how Jesus came to MM, I loved the redemption, I loved the love of God so clearly seen and felt, I loved it. It made me wish that MM was a real pers...more

This book shook me UP! I don't generally read this genre, and I settled in one evening to enjoy a pleasant little book, only to get sucked into an entrancing, sometimes harsh story of redemption, obedience and love.

I must say that I'm not sure if Lisa Samson is brilliant or off her rocker, but either way, this book is not one you will soon forget! It's also one you won't want to read by yourself...buy two copies and give one to your girlfriend. You will be glad you have someone to call in the m...more

My first thought was to give this book less than 5 stars, but I finished the book a week ago, and I just can't get it out of mind. There are so many things going on in it. Mary Margaret is a complicated person with a deep and abiding faith. She has many issues to work through in the book, as do many other characters. But the main message to me is the passionate love Jesus has for His people. He will go to any lengths to reach the lost and identifies deeply with those who suffer. I hope I don't e...more

Pleasantly surprised! A profound story of redemptive love. Written in the first person narrative, the reader learns of the life of Mary-Margaret as she reflects on the present and the past. Lisa Samson's writing style is appropriately meanders (as would the mind of the 70 year old woman, Mary Margaret). She writes with humor and depths of spiritual thought. Very Catholic, but not offensively.

Not only did I enjoy the story, but more importantly is caused me to ponder forgiveness, love, risk, purp...more

Loved this book! The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was it did take me a few chapters to get into the story and the flipping back and forth to tell the different periods of her life story got me a little dizzy until I adjusted. Once I made the adjustment I loved the portrayal of God's grace and the depiction of her love for Jesus containing being so natural. The fact that Mary-Margaret's friendship with Jesus didn't come from following rules but a two-way relationship between MM and Him...more

I do enjoy Lisa Samson's writing and mostly her characters. This one was no exception. I loved the way the story is told - a link between past and present, the memoir of a nun, whose story is not quite what you might think upon start. There are so many surprises along the way. Really, it's not what you expect.

It's like a mystery in a way. Except you really don't know that there's anything that you should be looking for until she drops it in your lap. Then you want to know more and more. Surprise...more

The low rating isn't because of the writing (which is excellent) or even the story line (which is well told and wistful). The low rating is due to the fact that author tries to excuse the accusations of abuse on children by the hands of Catholic priests as something that, while regrettable, isn't a big deal. A few bad apples.

I was appalled.

A 15 year study and report released in Canada on the history of residential schools run by the Catholic church up until 1996 reveled the level of abuse commi...more

I have loved most of Lisa Samson's books. I enjoyed this one a lot - deals with tough issues - but it's a beautiful story of redemption. Written from the viewpoint of a 70 + yearold women.. so narrative wanders a bit - but it's perfect. Favorite quote was on pg 183. "Oh, but I wanted the good stuff from God. Not the second best or the mercy despite the disobedience. I wanted fresh picked grace from the top of the heap, ripe, and burgeoning with refreshment...

Loved this book. Great story of devotion and forgiveness. Loved Mary Margaret's faith and her talks with Jesus. What a wonderful way to describe our relationship with Jesus. Mary Margaret's relationship was just the way our relationship with Jesus should be.

The story was so true to life, funny how we plan our life and then God steps in and our life goes in an entirely different direction.

it was a different experience, this read was.
i wasn't really into reading anything religious, but the book was an absolute surprise.
it was very entertaining, uplifting and somehow, i got in touch with my spirituality.
i was ambivalent though about the whole mary-margaret talking to Jesus and seeing him thing.
but it was a different read,
romantic, full of twists yet heartbreaking in some parts.
i love this book :)

Well, well, well. This isn't your average christian fiction. It has some pretty serious themes inside. It's quite honest. It isn't preachy. It's real and quirky and even Catholic (although you won't be indoctronated). Humerous too, I'd say this book is best read if you imagine an east coast accent. M-M meanders through her life, little bit present day, little bit past, and weaves an unusual tale of second chances, not judging and the power of faith and love. I really quite enjoyed it and will de...more

This one has to go back to the library today, and I'm glad! It was just..... so long-winded. I think there was a story in there, but I don't know where. Basically, I think the framework for this book - a story within a story - only made it a muddled mess. And I'm sorry for that because, as I read, I kept thinking that Samson had something very interesting to say. But now I don't have to finish it and, frankly, that's a relief.

I admit: this book was hard to get REALLY into and was confusing until about page 60. But when it got my attention, it kept it and now I simply can't forget about it. Best book I ever read-seriously.
Mary-Margret tells you about her life from conception to...well, until someone has to finish it for her.
I loved how it showed God is sorveign (yes, I spelled that wrong).
I loved the characters-I loved how Lisa Samson didn't try to sugarcoat her characters
lives or excuse the bad people. No, she went...more

I really enjoyed this book and it has kept me thinking about it even after I completed it. It took me a while to get into the beginning -- the jumping from the past to the present confused me at first. Lisa Samson writes about characters that have far from perfect lives and she writes about touchy subjects (sexual abuse, promiscuity, drugs, etc), but in a very "clean" and uplifting way.

The thing I love about Lisa Samson's books is that they are unexpected. She doesn't recycle the same plot with different characters. I can't even really explain what she does, but every time I read one of her books there is a reality about it. I had a hard time getting into this, but I really, really enjoyed it.

What an amazing story! If you're not Catholic you might not enjoy, however, the story was truly wonderful. It wasn't typical or expected. I stayed up WAY too late just to finish it!I think I will be searching out other books by Lisa Samson--it was just a random pick from the new books at the library.
