Sometimes I really like a light hearted read. Throw in some humor, pretty face-paced storyline and some shapeshifting characters that have some hot chemistry together, and well I am in Heaven!

Emma has always felt like an outcast. She and her best friend Becky partner in a trinket story called "Wallflowers" and both women have always been accused of being somewhat eccentric in the town they live in.

Emma has never felt like a raving beauty. She is considered too short, too overweight (by today's standards) and somewhat bossy. Although, she has dated...no one holds her heart and desire like her childhood crush and local heart throb Max Cannon. He has just returned to town after several years of absence causing a stir of excitment with all of the females. Emma always admires him from afar, no man has ever measured up to him, his loyality, his kindness, his fairness toward others and his definate sex appeal.

Max Cannon is a shapeshifting puma. He has returned to take his rightful leadership as head of his pack. Successful and handsome, he often gets tired of the overwhelming attention that gets sent his way. When he overhears Emma's sultry commanding voice on a phone call with his best friend, he is immediately drawn to her. Although he remembers her as someone who was more of a "wallflower" in high school, he decides to check out the source of her sexy voice first hand.

When Max and Emma meet again, he knows she is his mate. The attraction they have for one another is immediate, and he quickly claims her to be his mate... but, there are others that do not want them to be together and will do anything to stop it.

The rapport between Emma and Max had me laughing out loud at times. She accepts the fact he is a shapeshifter and to be with him, she must be one too, VERY easily. That was kind of refreshing...maybe not realistic, but refreshing.

I really enjoyed this book! It was funny, sexy and had some great characters. A great read for someone who wants a lighthearted, not to serious read.

If you are offended by dirty word and explict sex, this book is not for you.

This is the first book in the Halle Pumas Series. The next book is Sweet Dreams. I am looking forward to reading it!

I really enjoyed this book. It was an impulse buy while I was browsing for something to download to my SDR. I don't usually just buy books without researching the author first but I was feeling impulsive...and I'm glad I gave into impulse! I started and finished it within two hours and my only complaint is that it was entirely too short! :)

I have only read a few of Dana Marie Bell's books, but I have enjoyed the ones I have read. Two things that have been consistent: one, there is humor and two, there is steamy hot sex!!

This one was a very quick read, but I really enjoyed it and felt that the story was totally complete despite the length. I am definitely going to read the rest of the series.

My Thoughts:

Now I'm not one that goes for blondes but Max could definitely change my mind. The best thing about Dana Marie Bell's characters is that they feel "real". Max isn't over the top and Emma feels like someone you probably did know in high school. The supporting characters of Becky and Simon are sure to crop up in future Halle Puma books. I realize that short stories only give the writer so much space to create her world and characters and given the time DMB did a great job. I would love to have seen the town of Halle a bit more and a bit more back ground on the characters and I do hope future novels in this series will fill in all these blanks. This books was good enough to be a full length novel. I enjoyed it as a nice light shifter read with good writing and characters you can really like.

I can never give a shorter story/Novella a 5 star review because 90 or 100 pages is just not enough room to fully build a well rounded world or fully diamensional characters. so for me this is really out of 4 stars.

A solid 3.5 stars and a rush to read book two...can't wait for Simon and Becky's story! (less)

I read Bear Necessities first and loved it so of course I wanted to go back to where it all began so I jumped right into this one. Max and Emma (and Simon and Becky) are secondary characters in Bear Necessities so I wanted to see how they got started.

This was a nice, quick read. Perhaps too quick. I wasn't too thrilled when the story ended at 75% on my Kindle and then jumped into excerpts. I don't read excerpts (ever) so I wasn't too happy about that. Especially considering that the first excerp...more

I did not read this series in order, I started with Bear Necessities, because I had seen a review on it and it looked so cute! After reading it I had to get the rest of the series. So far I am really enjoying it!

It's short (114 pages is generous as there are a boodle of excerpts of other books that add to the page length), spicy, and sets up the next installment in the series nicely.

Emma Carter is a career wallflower, so naturally she and her best friend Becky name their antiques shop precisely that. While's been focused on running her business and making it successful, Emma's grown up into a confident, sassy, beautiful woman, a fact that doesn't go unnoticed by Max Cannon, who moves back to town after an extended absence. Max lays eyes on Emma and immediately decides that he's been a moron when it comes to her; instead of being forgettable, Emma shows Max that his search for a mate is over and all he has to do is convince her that his feelings are genuine.

Because of the length of the story, the relationship develops at a breakneck pace; I about had whiplash during their dinner date and how quickly they went from "nice to see you again, you're looking well" to "ZOMG be with me forever!" There's a cute subplot where we find out that Emma's best friend Becky and Max's beta Simon secretly think each other are just the best thing ever; matchmaking ensues and the stage is set for the next story. The matchmaking served as the vehicle for Max and Emma to really bond as a couple and worked well as a story element. They certainly do a lot of bonding as a couple, too- hence the Scandalous Books note.

This isn't a perfect story- it suffers a little bit from an abundance of telling and less showing than I would have liked. For example, Max tells Emma all about how he became Alpha and how this was a huge ordeal and how he and Simon completed it while they were still human which was unusual, and how people are changed from human to puma changeling and all that, and I felt like those were elements that were important and deserved more attention than a pre-nookie info dump could give them. The other characters didn't really get a lot of attention, either, although that may be because of the length and the fact that many of them get entire stories to themselves eventually. This isn't a big deal, just a heads up to people who want a lot of details about secondary characters or a lot of world building.

Overall, though, this was a great start to a series that definitely made me want to read the rest. Emma and Max are hilarious together (Emma especially is snarky and flip and a girl after my own heart.) Lucky for me, there are a bunch of titles already available!

Overall Grade: B+

The plot, from what little of it I actually read, was a typical smut/romance/happy-ever-after plot. Two people find each other and discover they're soul mates... Or just mates in this case given the shifter nature of the main character/s. Which I knew when I picked up the book, that I was expecting.
What I wasn't expecting was to find a male shifter, Dr. Max Cannon, so completely besotted with a human, Emma Carter, that...more This book really rather annoyed me. To the point that I couldn't finish it.

Or just mates in this case given the shifter nature of the main character/s. Which I knew when I picked up the book, that I was expecting.
What I wasn't expecting was to find a male shifter, Dr. Max Cannon, so completely besotted with a human, Emma Carter, that he would be willing to practically shag her brains out in a restaurant car park and change her without her permission on the second day of getting to know her. Admittedly they used to be at school together, as is quite often the stereotype of these types of books, and I am familiar with the love-at-first-sight or love-at-first-reunion-after-eight-years, but for Max to become so possessive of her that he can't think of anything besides "She is mine, I must take her, I must make her mine, right now, in the car-park" was a little much to take in.
But what really turned me off this book was Emma's reaction to the forced change. I understand that her character isn't the "woe-is-me cry-my-eyes-out-at-my-misfortune" type, as she tells us in the book, but to accept the fact that there are shifters, that one of them had just changed her without her knowing about i,t is just ridiculous. There's calm and unperturbed and then there's her.
But what I really couldn't wrap my head around was that fact that Max had done his cave-man thing - beat his chest, bitched (or should I say growled) at the fact that she'd mentioned in passing the other men in her past, changed her because he'd claimed her as his on the first date, told her he was a shifter and had already changed her back in the car park when they'd been this short of having sex - and then Emma just jumps into bed with him. As simple as that. A man that had changed her life so catastrophically that her essence, who she was, had been taken from her and replaced with something up that, until an hour ago, she hadn't known existed. And she just decides that now is a good time to lose her virginity to him (oh, did I mention she was a virgin up until this point.)
I'm sorry but no matter how well adjusted you are, if someone does something that life changing to you, you don't just hop into his bed without first screaming at him. Maybe add in a slap or stomping off, maybe key up his car or turn all of his friends against him (I am of course over exaggerating but the point still stands, she should have done something beside stood there and though "Okay then, whatever you say".) After punishing him a little, by all means shag his brains out, but having sex with him before that and you just look like a opinion-less, mindless pushover who will do anything to lay your high school crush. Not an attractive look on any woman.
So yes, by this point in the story I must say I gave up on the book. I couldn't even push myself to get to the next meeting of Livy and Emma, which surely would have been fun. And hopefully Emma gets to show her backbone a bit at this point. But, as I said, I couldn't force myself to read any more.
And unfortunately I highly doubt i'll give Bell's other books a go.(less)

With all of the shapeshifter and vamp books out there, it's surprising to me that this is my first feline shifter story. I loved all of the cat references throughout, it was a neat change of pace from the growling wolves. Okay, first of all, they weren't kidding about the explicit sex. I decided to give this book a go despite the fact that I tend to like my heat rating closer to warm than so-hot-I'm-blushing. After all, it's been on more shifter book lists than I can count. But it was also (no surprise) on the list of books for wallflower heroines. It doesn't really apply, in my opinion, as the heroine was formerly a wallflower but is no longer at the start of the book.
The Wallflower moves at a mad pace. It's not a long read. I was disappointed to find that the last 30% of the book was excerpts from other Samhain Publishing books. Actually, the first excerpt was from The Wallflower. Which is one of my biggest pet peeves ever. I wish publishers would take a little time to think that one through. I'm really curious to know how much extra work it would take to leave out an excerpt of a book at the back of the book itself. Or is it just laziness. Somehow, I think it's the latter.
Okay, right: The Wallflower moves at a mad pace. Events happen in a slam-bam thank you ma'am sort of way. And yes, I meant that double entendre. Max no sooner hears Emma's voice over the phone than he's meeting her in person than he's realizing she's his mate, turning her into a puma, taking her to bed and teaching her to be a wanton woman. There's hardly time for anyone to take a breath and, in all the mad rushing, important elements are left behind. Like plot and characterization. Max and Emma end the story where they began it. The only difference is that, by the last page, they're together.
Bell rushes Max and Emma into the bedroom pretty fast, but then it's revealed that Emma's a virgin. So, she's waited 25 years to have sex only to give it up without a second thought? That's...unusual. Why did Emma have to be a virgin in the first place? I don't mind virgin heroines, when they work for a story, but they mystify me when they don't. Especially novels with a great deal of erotic content. It's unlikely that a woman who has waited so long to go all the way will, after her first sexual encounter, suddenly be an expert in the bedroom.
The other thing that happens ultra-fast is the Emma's discovery of Max's werecat (Puma) nature. She accepts it with a minimum of disbelief. Also, we don't ever learn much about what it means to become a Puma, but all it seems to involve is eyes turning gold occasionally, the ability to shapeshift and an adherence to pack hierarchy. That's very much in evidence. Max also decides to make Emma a Puma without even telling her what he is. I didn't like that. At all.
My main feeling when I finished this book was that there wasn't enough substance to make it work. This is partly due to the length, but not entirely. Other authors have put a wealth of meaning into fewer words. I don't think I'll be buying the rest of the Halle Puma books, but I'd put free copies on TBR list. And, yes, that was a hint(less)

2.5 stars: Cute, fun, entertaining sexy shapeshifter romance. I liked the characters and the relationship, however the storyline could have been beefed up a bit more. I would have liked a more development of Max/Emma's relationship before he claimed her and more development around the pack, its structure, etc.

Short... erotic. If you love soft porn then this book is for you, along with the other stories in the series. However on the other hand great characterization, and story development. The character's are well rounded and developed that as the reader you feel that you know them personal and also fell what they are feeling, e.g love, lust etc.

The Wallflower is an excellent read. I was continuously smiling throughout and some times was even laughing out loud. Emma has some brilliant lines in the book and Max's reactions to her quips are classic.

Emma and Becky are best friends who run The Wallflower store in Halle. Absolutely charming and funny. I just wished it was a full story, it only took me an hour to read it and it was well worth the $2.62 kindle price I paid for it. Well, that was a fun read. Emma and Max were totally badass as Alpha and Queen of their pride. Emma was irreverent and beyond amusing with her various kitty-isms as I call them. The overall conflict was light in this tale, but I was too busy grinning my way through the story to care too much.

It was really good. Though short, it was funny and made me want to read all the other books. Especially the one for Simon. I liked him from the moment he appeared!
As for the main characters, I liked them. Especially Emma. I found her so funny and smart! I also liked Max but I can't elaborate since it was only 100 pages and we didn't get a good glimpse of their characters.

This was super cute! Emma is a feisty little human who's had a crush on Max, the Alpha to the Halle Pride of Pumas, for like ever! (Although she doesn't know he's a cat!) Max returns home after years away for school and such and is looking for his mate. Sparks fly... clothes fly... you get the picture! :) I liked Emma for her spunkiness and how she didn't take crap from anyone! Max is a hot guy who takes what he wants - literally - , namely Emma!

Dear lord, this book.
It was pretty funny, I'll give it that. But other then those witty little lines it wasn't something to write home about.
The sex was okay, it wasn't written badly so that's a plus.
Everything just happened way to fast for me. There was no climax in the story except for Emma's and when she found out about what Max was she just shrugged it off.
I would have been screaming but nope, she was totally fine with it.

I liked the mythology behind this one. It was set in a pretty straightforward shifter universe where humans didn't know about shifters, etc. It laid out the boundaries of the world clearly and everything made sense. Emma's been in love with Max since high school but Max barely knows she exists. When he rolls back into town to take his place as the Alpha of the Pumas, he's smitten at first sight. ROFLOL - Emma sure does know how to get under Max's skin :)

Loved her quick witty humor when trying to figure out things that happening all around her :)

Emma and her BFF Becky have their own Knick Knack Shop. They sell everything from picture frames to cook-o-clocks, and everything in-between. It was perfect for them.

When Emma had announced that Max Cannon was back in town, Emma wasn't surprised. She had already heard. Emma had a crush on Max since grade school, and Livia know it.
But Emma had inside information from Simon, Max's Best Friend who also worked at Emma's shop at times.

So when Emma had called over to Simon's shop wondering where the stain glass window for the church was, because it was late, Max had overheard their conversation.
He couldn't believe that "little Emma" from high school had it in her to be so demanding, that she was able to put his Bata in motion with a simple command. So he went with Simon to the Wallflower Shop where Emma worked and helped him bring the Stain Glass window.

One look at Emma, and he knew right away she was perfect for him. He had come back to town to take over the Alpha status once the old Alpha stepped down. And he could see right away that she would make a perfect Curana - Queen of the Pumas.

When she came out of the shop that night, she was startled to see Max waiting for her. He pretty much dragged her over to his car and threw her in (caveman style) and brought her to dinner. Over dinner they discussed how they were going to get their Best friends together. Simon knew without a doubt that Becky was his mate. But Becky was too shy to even stay in the same room with him. Yes she was attracted to him, but he also scared her to submission.

And so they Plotted ...

Cute story. The only thing that confused me a little was how qickly Emma excepted the Puma theory.. She's suppose to be the strong and witty one.. I would have expected a little more of a fight or questions ...

BUT it was a cute story, anyways :)
