A co-worker loaned this book to me - the logic being, I make quilts, I will enjoy a book about quiltmakers.
In this instance the logic was flawed. Yes I make quilts, but I don't live to make quilts and I don't want to read badly written books about people who are passionate about quilts. I'm not passionate about them, and I can't waste my time on bad writing.
The book basically reads like a romance novel with much internal dialog and angst over fairly trivial problems.

Novel 1: Quilters Apprentice: I wish I had read this book first! I started w/ the New Years Quilt and got a good idea of the history of the family and how the camp started however- this book explained the details better. I love the part where Sarah arranged a meeting for Ms. Compton and Ms. Embry in the gazebo. You will have to read it to find out why!!!!! ;)

This volume contains the first three novels in the series: The Quilter's Apprentice, Round Robin, and The Cross-Country Quilters. For anyone who enjoys quilts, quilting, and cozy fiction this will make for a peaceful afternoon. As someone who has read a lot about quilting, I found Chiaverini's desciptions of the process really well done.

this is three novels in a popular series. I can see why it's popular, quilting aside. It's about people and how they cope with a wide variety of problems. A quilting summer camp brings them together and fast friendships develop and it's over years. I was disappointed that the first novel was a slow much less interesting read than the following two. However, it sets the stage and is very important once you get beyond it. I plan to check out Jennifer Chiaverini other quilt novels. Since I don't pr...more
I really enjoyed all three of these books. They are about real women, not just the trials and tribulations of falling in love, but about the real problems of every day life. However, I must caution anyone interested in these books that if you are not interested in quilting, then you may not enjoy these books. Not only are the stories centered around quilting, but they are also laced with descriptions of quilt blocks and the sewing methods, so anyone without a knowledge of quilting may become ...more
As a quilter, and a wanna-be preoffessional quilter, I love theses stories. The very first one had me hooked iwth the story-line and characters and even was a great motivator to get me going on a new or an existing project. I love these human interest stories that have roots in hobbies that I love

This book contains the first 3 books in the series. I thought it was pretty good as the common denominator that brought all the woman 2gether was their quilting. From this hobby they slowly became acquainted and then emerged to friendship. As each woman went through difficulites of daily life they supported each other.
I am continuing to read this book, although it is very long (3 books in one). So far it is enjoyable and what I would consider "light reading". I find it difficult to read the previous reviews which bash this author. I am not a fan of "literary snobs" although I think I am married to one. I like to read a wide variety of works depending on my mood, what people recommend, etc. I don't consider myself experienced enough to be a critic. I can find things that I enjoy in almost ...more
I did not get past page 97 of the first novel. Then I went to the library and saw that this author is very prolific. I can't for the life of me see why, but she is obviously very popular - and wealthy, I would assume, by now.
I really enjoyed the first three books of this series. It was like adding drama and intrigue to sewing. It actually made me want to take up quilting! Loved the descriptions of the fabrics.
Great series!!
#1 introduces great characters & tells you Sylvias story.
#2 starts the business of Elm Creek Quilts & you get to know the ladies involved through their own stories.
#3 takes you through the stories of a group of campers & how they resolve some of thir own problems with the help oftheir new quilting friends.

What a great history lesson about Elm Creek Manor. I am looking forward to reading the rest to continue on finding more treasures. Sure did expand my interest in learning to quilt.
Well, this is a bit difficult to rate because it is actually three separate novels in one. I would rate the second book, "Round Robin," two stars, because each chapter was about a different character's life crisis. It got old. The third book, "Cross-Country Quilters," was much more of a page turner and would probably get four stars from me. However, these books ooze cheese, which is difficult to read sometimes.
A nice sampler of novels by this author. It has insipred me to read more of her work.
i've read almost all of these elm creek quilters books, and i love them

Excellent book with a great story and great quilting tips
Good book. Well done
Very heartwarming tale.
I've started the first book in this volume and again it's an easy read and being a quilter it's very visual and easy to follow.
Finished the first novel in this series and was very please with how it read and feeling very involved with the story line. I even got teary at the end of the story. I finished it in 5 days--very fast for me.
Starting the second novel, which picks up 2 years later after the first one. I'm tickled to see the main characters are the same.

These books found a place in my heart a few years ago, and I passed them on to my mom and sister. They celebrate the work and artistry of women and quilting--they are not grand or important novels, but they are of good and simple and meaningful things. If you are enmeshed in the woman's world of home and family and want encouragement that there is beauty and meaning in that, then these may speak to you, too.
Here are my ratings: 4.75 for book 1, 4.75 for book 2 and 4 stars for book 3. I really enjoyed all of them so much. The first two in the series I could not get enough of. I had a harder time getting into the 3rd book, "Cross Country Quilters" only because I missed the characters so much from the first two. I did end up getting sucked into that one too! A very enjoyable series, a perfect summer read.
Being a fiber artist I totally enjoyed the stories of the quilters lives with the quilts they were working on woven into the story.
The Quilter's Apprentice was a very enjoyable read. The characters are very likable and although I don't know much about quilting I did enjoy the quilting details and the overall spirit of women crafting together. It was a great read considering all the distractions and stress at this time of year, a nice break for my brain.
If you quilt, you will love these books. There are even actual quilt patterns that go along with these books. They are very well written. One feels like they know Sylvia Bergstrom Compson and her quilting family at Elm Creek Manor. Generations of family history and stories are told throughout these novels.
I really enjoyed this book - and I could read all three of the first books in this series one after the other without having to wait for the sequel to come to the library! I can really get attached to the women; they've become my friends. Now, if only I had time to quilt!
I love these books. Jennifer is a very very talented writer. I want to learn how to quilt because of these books. I feel like I am part of the Elm creek quilters as I read these. I also have read all of her books and would recommend them to anyone.

I just finished the second novel, Round Robin. It had more serious content like like marital affairs, trouble with your teenagers, long lost relations from adoption, etc...I found it nice. Actually, I missed more quilting references though.
This whole series of books is really great even if you don't quilt. It shows people helping each other and the growth they achieve in their lives because of good friends. I recommend you read them in order because they build on each other.
Absoluely loved this book, the beginning 3 books in the Elm Creek Quilts series. Can't wait to get to book number 4!!
Though I am a "piecer" and not actually a quilter, I love these stories! The lives of these women and the friendship and bonds they form are what I think most women have or strive to have in their lives.
