Sukiennicki’s monumental work purportedly took him 20 years to write, and tragically, he has not lived to see it published. The author’s focus is the geographical region that until the 1772 partitions was included in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (and so it excludes Czech and Slovak areas, although curiously includes a chapter on Finland). He briefly outlines the history of the Commonwealth and of the major ethno-linguistic groups inhabiting it, and dedicates a few chapters to the period ...more
