I loved this book as a child, and was so happy to rediscover it now I've committed myself to doing a program on Poland! It's a good story, and gorgeous illustrations, and I hope the Polish Embassy won't protest at having it be part of our workshop!

This clever story about a magician who tries to bargain with and outwit the devil interested me because of my Polish heritage. The author's colorful and detailed illustrations made the story come alive. The spider at the end of the story reminded me of the legend of the spiders that decorated the Christmas tree. What is it with eastern Europe and spiders? I was surprised to learn at the end of the book that it's based upon a real person, Pan Twardowski, a 16th-century astronomer and alchemist. I...more
