The prompter, as noted from our point of view, bore a chief part in the drama (as indeed the prompter always does in the Italian theatre), and the scene-shifters appeared as prominent characters. This is Venice in 1866 as observed by a young American diplomat - and later acclaimed author W.D. Howells. I'm so happy I found this.. and I 'found' it on the bookshelves of my host as we spent the Christmas of 2010 in Venice!!
