After My Fashion has an unusual publishing history. Although it was John Cowper Powys third novel written in 1920, it wasn't published until 1980. It seems that when his US publisher turned it down Powys made no effort to place it elsewhere. Indeed, when Powys had finished a book he tended to be oddly indifferent to its fate.

A "lost" manuscript published long after Powys' death, "After My Fashion" is an interesting if straightforward study of the conflict between fidelity and freedom, with heaping helpings of petty malice thrown in. The biggest problem with the book is its relative lack of Powys' mythological, historical and cosmic concerns, though it is interesting seeing his talents focused on a relatively small and pedestrian group of early 20th century humans. Powys was born in Shirley, Derbyshire, where his father was vicar. His mother was descended from the poet William Cowper, hence his middle name.
