David Weisner retells this lesser known traditional English tale about a widowed king who lives with his daughter, princess Margaret. His son, prince Richard has set off to see the world. One day the king meets an enchantress and and is instanly bewitched and they are married. The new queen is jealous of the king's pride and love for his daughter and uses an evil spell to turn her into a "loathsome dragon." Only far away prince Richard can break the s...more

The Loathsome Dragon
By:David Wiesner

When the royal princess dies, the King, his daughter, and his son are left. Soon after, the son sets out on a long journey. While the King was out hunting, he fell in love and brought home a new Queen who turned the princess she despised into a dragon. The princess was forced to live this way until the prince returned and kissed her three times.

I wasn't sure if either of us would get into this one but I figured with dragons and princesses and a handsome strong prince it *should* be okay. I especially liked the familial twist - the prince isn't saving his love, well, not in the usual manner. He's saving his sister. That meant a lot to me and it would have been an easy way to ruin the story IMO.
Wiesner handles it perfectly IMO. I'd definitely bring this title up to any friends looking for a picture book for their child about Julia...more

David Wiesner does it again with this retelling of the story of the wicked stepmother who enchants her stepdaughter out of jealousy. The illustrations are gorgeous. I particularly like the spooky wraith-like spirits the stepmother conjures up, the picture of the dragon sleeping in the four-poster bed (are those elephants carved into the bedposts significant?), the village scene where people are fleeing or hiding while the shadow of the dragon's head is visible on the side of a nearby house, an...more

I read this book as part of my illustrator project. I enjoyed it--the color palate and some of the images and ideas reminded me a lot of free fall, but the rhymes and the story are not as sophisticated as some of wiesner's later stuff. Yet, the book was still good and there was enough stuff going on with the illustrations that I can ignore the silly poem towards the end and would recommend the book for younger children (4 and up). This is a story you could read to kids, but remember, it is Wiesn...more

The king meets a lovely woman and she becomes his new wife. The new queen places a spell on the kind princess, Margaret, to become a loathsome dragon. The wizard in the area knows that Prince Richard is the only one in the position to save the princess. After the Princess returns, the queen is exposed as a toad and the enchantment spell is lifted from the king.

This book was pretty good. It was an interesting story, one that I hadn't heard before, and so that was nice. The drawings were cool, I especially liked the way the dragon was done, I loved the scales. I would probably recommend this books to kids who were especially fond of fairy tales involving princesses and dragons.

A nice story about a princess whose stepmother (who is really a witch) turns her into a big green dragon. Her brother has to save her and does in the end. Not too scary, beautiful watercolors, and an easy intro into the age-old tradition of witches putting curses on others that can only be solved one way.

An interesting tale with gorgeous illustration. We enjoyed it now and will enjoy it again when Michael is old enough to really understand it.

Picture Book. Not quite the typical fairy tale. A girl is turned into a dragon by her evil stepmother and rescued by her brother.

I love this story of a beautiful young princess and her brave and handsome brother and the wicked witch who is out to get them. It's a picture book and the illustrations are great. I love about anything by this author. Highly recommended.

Wicked stepmother casts a spell on the fair princess, turning her into a dragon. The spell will only be broken when her brother the prince kisses her three times.
Jen
An exciting lesser-known fairy tale. The illustrations do a wonderful job using the eyes to show the connection between the dragon and Princess Margaret. (Choice)

During David Wiesner's formative years, the last images he saw before closing his eyes at night were the books, rockets, elephant heads, clocks, and magnifying glasses that decorated the wallpaper of his room. Perhaps it was this decor which awakened his creativity and gave it the dreamlike, imaginative quality so often found in his work.

As a child growing up in suburban New Jersey, Wi...more
