James Grippando (Goodreads Author)
In the latest novel from the bestselling author whom critics have called "the thriller writer to watch," lawyer Jack Swyteck tackles a case in which the life of his best friend hangs in the balance--and in which nothing is as it seems. Miami criminal defense attorney Jack Swyteck isn't looking for a new client, at least not one who is homeless and in jail for threatening t...more

Since I had just finished and liked my first Grippando book, a stand-alone thriller, I snapped this up when I found a free Kindle version. It's the sixth installment in Grippando's series featuring criminal defense attorney, Jack Swyteck. It didn't hurt that I hadn't read the previous five Swyteck books. Although Grippando gives a crash course in Jack and his friend, Theo Knight, their backgrounds don't affect the action much in this book. It begins with a newly-blind hostage negotiator from the...more
The concepts I found most interesting in the book, was how Grippando based the circumstances of the plot and it's characters in part on the story of the "Disappeared's" from Argentina's Civil War as well as the idea to have a blind negotiator who's blindness was influenced by his own father's blindness due to macular degeneration. The race to discover the truth behind homeless man Falcon's past and his reasons for holing up in a hotel with four hostages while $200,000 is being kept in a Bahamian...more
This was the first Grippando book that I have read, so Swyteck was a new character for me. This was a free read in three parts from the kindle store, but I waited for all three parts to be available before I started reading. I did not want to risk being left hanging.
From the book description, I though that this book would have a more legal or sleuthing edge to it, but it was more of a thriller suspense read. However, there were not enough nuggets given to uncover the mystery during the first tw...more

I am not normally fond of the Lawyer and Cop books. However this one was fantastic! Not only did it keep me reading even when i should be doing other things but it also had just enough new stuff I know nothing about to be informative without making me feel like i was being educated. I read this in the kindle 3 part format and even enjoyed the little post scripts from the author. It was interesting to me to see how he choose parts of his own life to slide into the story without making it sound li...more
Like many others I got this as a free 3 part download from amazon and read it on my kindle app for the android over 4 nights. The first book I have read from James Grippando and it probably won't be my past. I liked the links into the history of the disappeared in Argentina - something I wasn't aware had been going on (although initially I thought I was familiar with this but then realised I knew about this sort of thing happening in Brazil)
Although I had an idea of the ending, there were a few...more

I've read the previous books in this series and was looking forward to continuing the Jack Swytek saga. The plot starts out simple as Jack prepares to defend a homeless man arrested for attempting to jump off a bridge and it just takes off from there. Jack & Theo get mixed up in some trouble once again. We also meet some new characters in a blind police officer named Vince, as well as his love interest Alicia. Not sure if we'll see either one again, but they definitely added to the plot. If...more

Miami lawyer Jack Swyteck defends a homeless man named Falcon who takes hostages at a hotel after being released from jail. Falcon has among his hostages, Theo Knight, a man who Swyteck once pulled off death row and who became his best friend. He also wants to talk to Alicia Mendoza, a police officer who's dating the blind hostage negotiatior and happens to be the mayor's daughter. What Jack doesn't know is that Falcon has a deeper agenda and is panicked enough to do anything to clear his name....more
I received this book as a free download - and as such I was pleasantly surprised that it was as good as it was. As a pure work of fiction it was interesting, a bit suspenseful and a decent read. I enjoyed some of the characters and as such I would read this author again to see if there is more character development in later novels, as well as to see the turn of events. Disappointing, however, was the lack of information or further development of a main component of the plot - Argentina's Disappe...more

When a homeless man is threatening to jump off a bridge unless he can talk to the only daughter of Miami's Mayor, Vince Paulo, a blind hostage negotiator, is brought in to talk him down.
Once Falcon, the homeless man, is down, Jack Swyteck is called in to defend Falcon with his legal proceedings stemming from the bridge incident. But the bridge incident turns out to be the least of Falcon's legal issues. The Mayor is dead set against his daughter going anywhere near Falcon, even though she is a...more

This isn't your typical James Grippando book. This is more of a suspense thriller than his normal mystery books. I liked it because I love his main character of Jack Swytek, but found it harder to stay interested in than his other books. In this one, you know who is doing all the bad things, but you don't know why. That's the primary plot of the book. Why is all this happening and how does all of it fit together. Mr. Grippando takes and introducing you to the political mayor and his daugther. He...more
This came to me as a free ebook from Barnes and Noble - I hadn't read any of his stuff before but I really enjoyed it. It's part of a series set in Miami with a criminal defense lawyer as the main character. That said, it wasn't a courtroom drama, dealing instead with a hostage crisis and the dark history of Argentina's disappeared. It was very suspenseful, poignant, with some humor, many interesting characters, good dialogue - I really liked it and I will read more of his books.
This was the first book that I read from this author. It was a three-part freebie from Amazon for the Kindle. I enjoyed the fast pace and the historical background. I would definitely be interested in reading more from Mr. Grippando and will look into the other 5 Jack Syteck books. I especially like that you didn't need to have read all the previous books to enjoy this one, it stood out on it's own and was a faced-paced read.
It is a good thing that this is part of the Jack Swyteck series, or it would have been harder to get it located on Goodreads. This thriller takes place mainly in Florida, and includes some rather strange characters. The most memorable scene--hey--this screen almost disappeared--better wind this up--took place when our hero Jack drove into a thankfully empty motel room. Good amount of fun.
A fun quick read! This was a free e-book from B&N that was released in 3 installments to promote the author's latest book. Part of a series of books with the main character of Jack Sweytek, a Miami lawyer. I enjoyed this enough to want to check out the other books in the series.
A typical suspense mystery with some interesting history/back story about the Argentine Dirty War.

Jack was doing some pro bono work for a homeless man who lived in a old junk car. When he went to see him they found a body in the trunk. They thought it was the client until the ME told them it was a woman. That evening the client hi-jacked him and his partner and held his partner hostage. What he wanted was to speak to the mayors daughter.
I never read any James Grippando books before. In fact, I never heard of him. I got this book as a free nook download from Barnes and Noble so I figured I would give it a read.
I'm so glad I did. I'm a sucker for mysteries and this book was great. It's the 6th book in a series about Miami Defense Lawyer Jack Swyteck. I have to add the other books to my read list!

I don't know why this ebook was published in three parts, but it was definitely a page turner. Admittedly, by mid-two I caught on to the plot and inevitable ending but the twists and turns kept my interest. I look forward to reading more by James Grippando and hail a great big, "Thank you," for the freebie!
I downloaded this as the 3 e-book format but read it straight through. I have not read any of Mr Grippando's books before so I did not know there were earlier stories about the main character, Jack Swyteck. Indeed one of the small gripes I had was that I did not realise who was the main character straight away. It seems harsh to complain as it also means that each character is strong and well drawn but only up to a point. I was left wanting to know more about all of them. Sergeant Paulo, especia...more
