McCourt has a compelling style of writing, an extraordinarily masculine style (I don't know what this means exactly, but if I were ever to try to pin down what I thought made for "masculine" writing, I'd definitely look at McCourt's book, if only to avoid the traditional recourse to Hemingway). One thing that was nice about it was that it was a memoir that happened to be about a period in his life when he was a teacher -- i.e. that happened to be about teaching. It clearly wasn't a &q...more

This book is difficult to review. While I appreciated McCourt's attempt to recognize teachers (especially English teachers) and the work (often underappreciated) that we do, I felt that his theory of if we all "think outside the box" and try to be friendly with our students, than we will have a successful teaching career, a bit unrealistic, overly idealistic, and in many ways, condescending. While I do admire some of his methods, and enjoy his writing style, I found that the times ...more

Frank McCourt: The Irish-American Larry McMurtry?

I ended up with mixed feelings about this book. I loved -- no, adored -- the first section of this wry, honest memoir. The second section was solid, also, but felt a little out of place. (My reaction: What? McCourt's in Dublin drinking, cheating on his wife, and not getting the doctorate he's supposed to be working on? What does this have to do with his high school teaching career?) The third section returns to and wraps up his teaching caree...more

Though one could argue that this book pales in comparison to the mastery that is Angela's Ashes, one thing it does live up to is the stark honesty as well as the willingness to look at the whole of the world with a good natured humor. And though, McCourt is uproaringly funny, he knows when to step back and give the reader a moment to be silently moved.

At times, I felt that his students were being outlined as overexaggerated charicatures of what high school students really are. However, I'm...more

Teacher Man by Frank McCourt is his follow-up to Angela's Ashes and 'Tis. He says in the prologue that he wrote 'Tis about his life in America and how he became a teacher, but after it was published he had the nagging feeling that he'd given teaching short shrift. So he wrote Teacher Man about teaching English and creative writing in NYC schools.

McCourt is such an easy writer to read (as long as you don't try to read it with an Irish brogue, which will slow you down a bit). This selection f...more

As someone who, like McCourt, taught for many years in high schools, vocational schools, and a community college, I found it amusing to observe the degree to which schools and students are the same everywhere. On both coasts and everywhere in between, apparently, it's customary to greet a substitute teacher with the question, "Who are you today?" (I'll never say that again--every sub must hear it a hundred times a week.)

In Teacher Man, it was also fun to be reminded how, in...more

Should be a must read for all considering a career in teaching - would be much more helpful than the sterility and overly-theoretical blabber perpetuated by Schools of Education everywhere. Often sarcastic and very witty, McCourt describes his adventures in teaching. An imperceptive reader may come to the conclusion that McCourt doesn't/didn't care about his teaching because of his tone, but anyone with a sense of passion will find the same in McCourt's writing (which must have existed in his te...more

I wanted to abandon this book three times, but I would put it down and something would call me back to it. After the third attempt, I couldn't put it down. I made many, many personal connections to this text.
"I don't see a class as one unit sitting and listening to me. There are faces showing degrees of interest and indifference. It's the indifference that challenges me..." Why?

I was told by a colleague after I read this book that Frank McCourt is "a giant ass," but I really liked it. McCourt's ruminations on what it's like to be a first-year English teacher felt spot-on to me, especially his lengthy descriptions of how one's idealist fantasies about what teaching literature to high schoolers will be like dissolve into the reality of each day in the classroom.

The book made me laugh, and I loved McCourt's characterization of his students and coworkers. ...more

I do not like this book. I thought, "He's a teacher, I'm a teacher. I should read it," and "He wrote 'Angela's Ashes' which people seem to like, so I'll read it." I wish I'd left it alone. I actually bought the book for someone else, but then I decided to read it myself and give her something else. I'm glad I didn't give it as a gift.

The lightest of McCourt's three memoirs, "Teacher Man" picks up where "'Tis" left off, as the author embarks on his teaching career in the public high schools of New York City.

McCourt pulls no punches in his recollections, taking on the school adminstration, B-class writers he bumps into on the outskirts of the City's literary circles, blue-collar parents of his students, and himself. We respect his criticisms of others because he turns the same pink-rimmed eye to his ow...more

I'm in love all over again with Frank McCourt and his storytelling! Honestly I was left with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth after the downer that was 'Tis, and I expected this to follow on as the third piece in an autobiographical trilogy. But this is something else entirely. It's hardly memoir, let alone anything belonging to the "inspirational teacher" genre. It reads more like oral history than anything else as his students are really the ones telling the story. Damn, does he hav...more

This book is not Seminary G rated due to language and a bit of sexual content. I am moved, however, by McCourt’s writings (Angel's Ashes, 'Tis and now Teacher Man).

Having only listened to the author read these books on tape, I am uncertain if I would be similarly moved by the written prose.

Teacher Man is a powerful memoir about a passionate English/creative writing high school teacher. A teacher who became sufficiently skilled to make a difference in the lives of the students fortu...more

Frank McCourt returns to form in this book, after a disappointing turn in 'Tis.

Give copies of this book as gifts to the teachers in your life. Teacher Man is a great reminiscence on a career that was so much more than a career. In McCourt's case, it was a calling, a way to indulge his love of books, and a way to redeem his own lost childhood by interacting daily (and with a remarkable lack of bitterness) with kids both privileged and not.

For every student who thinks that teachers c...more

I was fully expecting to dislike Teacher Man, after reading various reviews of the book and being bored by the first chapter (which I've heard McCourt himself pretty much recite verbatim over the last few years). However, his moments in the classroom were wonderful, and I wish there were more of them. I agree that his meanderings into his own life and lack of education were disruptive to the "story" I was expecting (given that half of the title is "Teacher"), but I was engros...more

The style of writing makes me feel like I'm having an Irish coffee with McCourt at his house. I can relate to a lot of what McCourt writes about, being a teacher and all, even if he was a teacher for 30 years and I'm approaching a tenth of that. In a lot of places he talks about American society's lip service towards teaching in very concrete terms, and he's especially biting about people who just become teachers in order to become administrators who never have to deal with students.

Let's be honest, most who read this are probably teachers, like myself. I could relate to Frank as I believe that teaching is more about personal relationships about all else. By investing some class time in my students, learning about their lives and how they FEEL, my students know I care and they work for me every day. It's the MAGIC that many teachers don't experience because they feel teaching is about lesson plans and homework. Frank GETS IT. Any school was lucky to have such a great teache...more

I like Frank McCourt, I like his writing style, I think he's super charming and when he writes forwards or articles or reviews of other books I love his writing.

His best book is Angela's Ashes. This one was okay but I didn't feel like the story he was telling was a story that was dying to be told. In this story he discusses his young adult years and his time as a teacher. Sounds good? So the Christmas it came out three women in my family got this book (including me) and we all read most or a...more

McCourt's brain must be literally near exploding from the sheer number of poignant little stories and anecdotes bumping around up there. He's a very laid-back, inviting storyteller, and although the book started slowly for me, I was hooked by the end. As a teacher I mostly read it for the classroom stuff, and I would have liked to have seen more of that. It's called "Teacher Man," but it's mostly a list of stories from his life, most of which do not involve him as a teacher but are giv...more

I found Teacher Man a very interesting read; as a teacher, the book certainly told it like it was, and still is, for teaching in the trenches of high school, and the impact teachers hope and sometimes can make upon their students.

On the downside, the book can be a little ranty and long-winded--and especially over the top with the self-effacing attitude. McCourt devotes a little too much to his own education and adolescent troubles in Ireland. Also, I didn't find his dating and/or mar...more
