When the town of Hardscrabble placed an ad for a new firefighter, they never expected a dragon to apply. But Spark wants the job because he has a secret. He’s afraid of fire . . . and that’s not good when you are a fire-breathing dragon! Spark knows the only way to conquer your fear is by facing it. A funfilled tale with plenty of fire safety tips.

Mommy's review from 2/5/09 -

This is a great book for toddlers - Julia loved it. She was amazed and didn't say a word throughout the whole book. It's long enough to be a real nice bedtime story but at the same time not too long that she wakes back up and wants to play.
The story has a great lesson in it about fire safety. It actually has a bunch of smaller lessons in one really. The author managed to include a quick reference to stop, drop and roll, how to not try to extinguish a stove top fire...more

This is a very cute story about Spark the Dragon who wants to become a Volunteer firefighter. The catch is he’s scared of fire which makes being a dragon quite tough. Spark get’s teased by the other dragons for not being able to chase away burglars and knights. Spark takes his job as a firefighter very seriously though and commits himself to the training and getting in shape.

This book is filled with fun illustrations and beautiful colours.

Dragon who is scared of fire joins the volunteer firefighters in a small town. Accurate portrayal of all the things firefighters must do to train, but gets a little more whimsical and unrealistic toward the end. (As if dragons aren't already whimsical? Anyway, you get the picture.) I can see this going over very well for storytime. Also a hit for any little ones with a firefighter fascination.

This book had wonderful illustrations and was a great read. I would use this to introduce fires and how to act appropriately when one occurs around my students. It would be great if I could have a firefighter come in and read the book to my students and at the end have them practice: stop, drop, and roll.

This is a cute story about overcoming fear. Spark is a dragon who is scared of fire. He became a firefighter to get over his fear of fire. This story talks about how anyone can get over their fears and accomplish anything.

More a fire safety and facing your fears theme than dragon. Art is colorful and comic, but a little cluttered for distance like ST groups.

I really liked this book. It could be used to teach children some good concepts such as overcoming weaknesses and turning them into strengths and not giving into fears or giving up. This is a good story about Spark the dragon who is afraid of fire so he decides to face his fear by becoming a firefighter. He is able to turn his weakness into a strength.

This book is a great example of someone overcoming fears and doing something even if people say you cannot.
Beverly
Very enjoyable story which subtly teaches young readers some fire "don'ts." Cute cartooney illustrations.
