Let's pretend this is the book I am thinking of, though I'm not sure it is. It was a HUGE, display book that was read to us in primary school, the sort that the teacher has open on a stand at the front of the room because it's too big to hold open and read. I have this weird feeling that Spike Milligan may have been involved.

I still remember the title poem, word for word (at least I think I do):
