The world ended six years ago. London is a flooded mess. What happened? I'm not sure yet, but it has something to do with the FreakAngels, their powers, and their strange connection. There's superhumans, a dystopian setting, great dialog, stunning art, and enough suspense left at the end of the volume that I'm eager to keep going. And it's available free online, which is a huge plus.

Warren Ellis has been actually on my to-read list for the last year or so with his novel Crooked Little Vein. I've been given books and purchasing books at a rapid rate so his novel has been pushed to the back burner constantly. However, when Alaina recommended this graphic novel to me and I had noticed his name pasted on the cover, I was pretty excited that I could squeeze it in.

Twenty-three years ago, twelve children were born in England with strange abilities. 6 years ago, the world ended. Wh...more

This beautifully drawn online comic is set in a post-Apocalyptic London.
It is free, which is nice, although I would be willing to pay to not have the downloading lag time between Every. Friggin'. Page. And they are short pages, only 4 panels each.

12 babies were born at the same time 23 years ago. The world ended 6 years ago. This is the story of what happened next.

Warren Ellis is a writer able to write one great series after another and despite having read his work for years, for whatever reason "Freakangels" never occurred to me to be a series worth checking out. Having read the first book though, I only wish I'd read it earlier.

The 12 Freakangels (the name of their gang) are 12 weird psychic 23 year olds each with own strange personali...more

Hmmmm, I love me my post-apocalypse. Especially in London. I see people have been meh-ing about the concept, and I will admit that it isn't entirely new, but I do like the idea that even though we have this group of super-empowered ninja telepaths looking after the "normal" people, they're actually quite believable people. Their extreme sense of responsibility doesn't start making sense until it's hinted that they were in some way responsible for the current state of the world, but once it does,...more

Warren Ellis has written something of a minor steampunk(-ish) masterpiece here.

This particular volume concentrates on introducing the characters, twelve 23-year-old UK psychics who destroyed the world, "six years ago," by simply concentrating on it hard enough. Now they've set up fort in the London district of Whitechapel, providing shelter from bloodthirsty gangs to refugees from the English countryside. Each has pale skin and violet eyes, and a sardonic, temperamental disposition seems to be c...more

"The best non-zombie post-apocalyptic coming-of-age-story I've read all year."

This is why I suck at blurbs. It's also the reason I'm entering a hyphen-addiction program.

Simply said, I loved this series.

Why?

1. It started quickly and managed to do the near-impossible: namely, introduce twelve main characters pretty much all together while still making each of them distinct and interesting.

2. It was well-balanced. Fun yet still serious. Not everyone was a goody-goody, but the story wasn't oppr...more

"23 years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment.
6 years ago, the world ended.
This is the story of what happened next."

So begins the story of the FreakAngels, a group of dysfunctional young adults who, in the wake of an unnamed catastrophe, guard the drowned ruins of Whitechapel against invasion and looting by would-be attackers from other "territories." But the fragile life they've built starts to crumble when word of an old friend-turned-enemy arrives via...more

Found this one on Kelly's Top 5 list and enjoyed the pants off it!!! Am waiting for vols 2 and 3 to turn up from the North Shore libraries. Great art, excellent ensemble cast piece, and an interesting set-up. The characters really make this one for me, and their snarky, feuding-family dialogue.

Post-apocalyptic England. Group of people who are psychic. Lovely art-work. Cool sense of humor. One character who says fooking WAY too much. This series is a good read, I got hooked right away. I like Ellis' style, its crude and witty at the same time.

Edit: I forgot to mention, this whole series is completely FREE online at www(dot)freakangels(dot)com

I've read the whole volume online, after discovering the site through a pdf version of The Steampunk Guide to the Apocalypse. I guess I hardly need to add that I was simply blown away.
I just couldn't get enough of it... The setting is fantastic, Ellis is great as usual and Duffield's work is terrific (where's he been hiding this long?). I guess I'll end up buying the paper edition!
At present I'm taking a break before beginning volume 2: I know too well that once I start it I won't be able to sto...more

It finally happened. Years after I found three of my all-time favourite stories - Y the Last Man, The Red Star and Runaways vol 1 -, I found a comic which I absolutely love. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed a lot of comics in the last few years, but there's always been something missing. Figures I'd find another good series only after it's over.

The setting in post-apocalyptic London, the steampunk-y details (I want KK's helicopter bike), the character design, the art, and everything else about t...more

Bisher ziemlich interessant!

The art is fucking gorgeous. Like I'm watching a film. And Warren Ellis, well... does anything really need to be said?

I think I want to be KK.

I REALLY enjoyed this comic. It may be that I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic steampunk settings, and London didn't hurt either, but the excellent art and characterization really drew me in. It seems to me that Mr. Ellis did not begin to write before carefully planning each character, their relationships to one another, and their role in the story. My main gripe is that I have a hang-up with authors writing accented speech, so Alice's 'fooking' this and 'fooking' that did get on my nerves a bit....more

meh. 11 post-apocalypitc telepaths/best friends fight and argue with each other for an entire graphic novel.

i didn't hate this but didn't really like it. the dialogue was really getting to me after a while. if i had the read that girl say 'fooking' this or 'fooking' that one more time... i get it. she has an accent and swears a lot. COOL!

the art was nice sometimes, and ugly at others. duffield's stuff is like a mix between josh middleton and the luna bros.

the softcover is out by the way. if yer...more

Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield do an online comic called Freak Angels. This volume collects the first however many issues. The characters are interesting but cliched. The art’s alright, a clumsy sort of anime. The story goes nowhere very quickly. Of course, it’s an ongoing series so I imaging more will be revealed in ensuing issues. I enjoyed reading this but it doesn’t have a lot of depth. It’s like a soap opera whose feature characters are post apocalyptic mutants. The end is utterly anticlima...more

FreakAngels is a webcomic written by well known comic book author Warren Ellis. It is dark and graphic at times - as posted on the site, recommended for mature audiences. It is a complete, overarching story spanning six 144 page print trade paperbacks worth of comics and really must be read from the beginning.

FreakAngels Volume 1 opens with the following quote:

"23 years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment.
6 years ago, the world ended.

"Imagine: it took the end of the world to create the conditions for the human race to move forward into time on their own terms."

What always amazes and entertains me to the point of glee when reading works by Ellis is the fully-formed and usually a little dysfunctional relationships that inhabit these worlds he creates. The Freakangels "family" is a bunch of twenty-something narcissists and anti-heroes all looking for ways to enjoy or fix the world that they apparently "broke" a few years ago. T...more

Started reading the archives for this online after reading Patrick Rothfuss's comment that the author may unseat Joss Whedon for the Witty Dialogue Throne. I do love the individuality of the characters and the interesting post-apocalyptic slant. The language is a bit rough for my taste, but it seems quite true to life. I've heard plenty of folks in their 20's talking like that in the UK.

I'm intrigued. I'll be reading more.

this started out slow for me, actually re read the first couple of "issues" of the graphic novel...however it then picked up and I really enjoyed it (if the series continues at this level/picks up might have to revisit this ranking), there is just something about ellis' writing, way he develops characters, etc that is just awesome...the build up is just so subtle with a cool payoff, really curious to see where this series goes...

I had read this online and it was interesting to compare the experience with reading the book. It's an interesting storyline with a group of psychic young people having been born at the same time with the same eyes and skin no matter where they came from. Six years ago the world ended. London is semi-submerged and they keep trouble away. Part of the problem is that they have too much power, one of them wants all the power and there are other factions that want to stop them.

Interesting and convol...more

good read, nice visuals. the plot is filled with possibilities, no back story yet, really. very much a youthful dystopia with a handful of talented younguns at the top of the hierarchy. water, water everywhere and I'm guessing the boards are shrinking...definite fun...and a bonus: picked it up at the library, at no direct cost to me...thanks to government subsidizing my intertwinement hahah, entertainment!

The art, concept, world and characters are all intriguing in this first volume of FreakAngels. This series shows a lot of potential, but with so many characters, and living in such a mystery of a world, I felt like the first volume couldn't get enough out to really hook a person. However, it does create interest, and I do think it could get really good. I would like to read more.

I have found this comic it the Recommendation page and I liked it a lot. It is a post apocalyptic London and the main characters are twelve people born the same instant with pale skin and violet eyes. They are telepathic and they probably have some other powers that have not been shown yet.

One of the twelve was expelled from the group, and why it will be explained before the end of the volume. The remaining eleven are taking care of the community, the reason they feel responsible has been hinted...more

This is a good example of how moving a story very slowly can actually be a good thing. Ellis pulls off the introduction of his new strange world and (probably even stranger) characters in a very leisured way that actually manages to make you more intrigued about the size of the mystery behind them, instead of just getting bored. Or it does for me, anyway. Want. More.
