This book is an essential history of the final stages of aviation development that immediately preceded the Wright Brothers historic flights of December 1903. Coupled with another of Crouch's books - The Bishop's Boys: A Life of Wilbur and Orville Wright - you have a comprehensive history of aviation's early days in the United States.

The book discusses Octave Chanute, Samuel Pierpont Langley, Otto Lilienthal, Augustus Herring, and the Wright Brothers - their individual accomplishments and their
Covers many who tried and failed, the glider experiments, etc. - all those the Wright's learned from. Also details the role of Octave Chanute and his correspondence with the Wrights. Very interesting.
