This is a sharp and insightful Weberian inspired historical sociology of the Australian family, which despite its antipodean focus has usefulness elsewhere: as scholars such as Patricia Vertinsky (in her discussion of medical infuences of womens physical activity The Eternally Wounded Woman) have shown us there is a widespread common historical experience and ideology of gender at least in the English-speaking world.
