Of course, I read The Ultimates a while ago, shortly after it came out in trade paperback. I believe I have Volume 2 in single issues, stored away in a dusty box. Anyhow, after seeing the Captain America movie and remembering the upcoming Avengers movie, I thought I'd break them out and work my way through them again. A few quick thoughts:

I first encountered The Ultimates on the advice of Geoff Klock, who mentioned them at a conference in Albuquerque back when we were both graduat More...

Following the devastation wreaked by the Hulk in the first book, Bruce Banner is locked up for his irresponsibility. Nick Fury reveals a secret that could destroy Earth. And alien Nazis are running rampant! This could only be a job for - the Ultimates!

Mark Millar follows up his popular first book on the Ultimates with another strong volume. Homeland Security is in a way the ultimate distinction between good and evil - evil aliens intent on destroying Earth who are inhabiting the bodie More...

I’ve never been one to fear change, but reading The Ultimates: Homeland Security makes me wonder if that creeping illness of aging is starting to catch up with me because I don’t like what Mark Millar’s done to my favourite comic book hero and my favourite super team.

Now, I get that the Ultimates aren’t the Avengers and that the Ultimates universe is some sort of weird parallel land or something, but no matter how we dress it up, The Ultimates is an attempt to “reboot” the Avengers in More...

The good: very nice art. Everything looks like a big screen comic book movie.

The bad: everything else. The entire cast is either jerks, seriously messed up or unable to speak unless they have something clever or snotty to say.
The only stable characters are Sam Jackson... I mean Nick Fury and Captain America, and they spend most of their time playing babysitter to the other 'heroes'.
Millar basically took the original heroes, found their most negative trait and made that th More...

Picking up exactly where volume one left off, the Ultimates face their greatest threat yet – and it ain’t someone within their own ranks this time. The Chitauri – also known as “the Skrulls” (a clever nod to us Marvel fans) – have been revealed to have infiltrated many high levels of power in the U.S. and world governments. And we also learn that Captain America’s greatest nemesis right before his apparent “death” in the waning days of WWII is not only a Chitauri in disguise, but is also very mu More...

The Ultimates is one of the best Avengers books I've ever had the pleasure of reading if only because the Ultimate U is so strange while remaining so familiar. Watching the team congeal over these few issues is incredible, and the whole Skrull invasion is like a mini-Secret Invasion (likely a pretty good influence on that arc, as well). It's interesting seeing Cap use the Hulk as a weapon, and while I'm still bothered by Cap's anti-French sentiment (in the original MU, Cap has a great respect fo More...

Wow.

I picked this one back up, less than halfway through and had planned just to read a couple of issues worth. That didn't happen. I read the rest of it. I couldn't help it!

Millar's re-imagining of the Avengers really amps up in this volume. While the first volume of The Ultimates was pretty good but left me wanting for something, this one MORE than made up for it. From the continued references to (then) current events to nearly all of the characters practicing thei More...

Very solid storytelling here. This was the best time period for the first run of the Ultimates line... when the characters, while cast in new and grittier roles, still held true to the base nature of being heroes. Not too long after this book, the stories began to spiral out of control, and the entire line became an exercise in seeing how far the characters could be taken before the peasants (the reading class) rightfully rose up to overthrow the pompous aristocracy of the Writing class.

Just as good as volume 1. The writing and planning is perfect. There are no repeated plot elements, no formulaic approach to the plot and it really keeps you guessing. They spend some more time with Thor and really get you questioning his sanity. Great work. Many plots are resolved and it leaves you wanting more. Unfortunately Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch did not continue with a third volume. I began reading 'Ultimates 3' but stopped because it is really quite terrible. Be sure to check out 'Ulti More...

Though not as good as volume one (the villains sort of came out of the left field on this one), it was still a thoroughly enjoyable read. I've never been a huge Captain America fan, but this series is definitely changing my opinion on that. Hulk still gets some good lines in, but the laugh out loud trophy on this installment goes to Thor.

Superb series. I need to pace myself before tackling Ultimates 2, or I won't have anything left to read! (except, you know, ALL of Ultimate X-Men)

With the team looking to fall apart before it can come together, Bruce Banner makes a choice. Downing his serum, Banner become a raging, angry, and horny grey-skinned Hulk out to trash Manhatten. As the Ultimates finally come together - adding deadly marksman Hawkeye and Soviet spy Black Widow - the team must not only take out the Hulk, but battle their own dysfunctional demons. The opening arc concludes, setting up for the next big run!

This is the amazing conclusion to The Ultimates Vol. 1 Super-Human. Wow! This was so much fun to read! If you haven't checked out The Ultimates, I highly recommend that you go out right now and find a copy. You won't be disappointed.

I should really give this only 2.5 stars cuz the only thing memorable is the whole family massacre and "fingernail" slaughter scenes of ultra-real violence. The rest is pretty much connect-the-dots with a potentially great super-villain wasted pretty quick. Good comic candy if you are browsing shelves or hitting a library.

The problem with The Ultimate Universe in Marvel comics is that the people who will get the most out of the stories are the ones who know the originals. If you don't know that Hank Pym notoriously battered his wife Janet in a famous 70's Avenger's story, then you won't understand why they bother to include that in the Ultimate Universe, and will probably think it's just to be "edgy". That major downfall of not being new-reader-friendly is the reason why I wouldn't recommend the Ultim More...

Now that the team is meshing, a threat from beyond earth tests their talents. Captain America is pretty awesome, can't believe it took me this long to "discover" him.

Filled with a lot more political goings on than I usually like but still a very good read. The buttkicking that goes on at the end is always fun.

I have one word to express my love for volume two, and that word is: Hawkeye.

If I could have two words, the second would be: Thor.

The Hulk is still stupid as is the plot device of a secret race of aliens living on Earth and working with the Nazis.

More of the same, which in this case is a good thing. Very good character development and jarring twists. Here's hoping the Avengers movie is this good.

Thoroughly enjoyable. The Ultimates has a more serious tone than some of the other Ultimate titles (like Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 1: Power and Responsibility), but it's executed so well that it's still a lot of fun. The art is excellent--lots of full page splashes that look like movie posters.

Reprints Ultimates #7-13. The Ultimates deal with Pym's beating of Wasp and Hulk's rampage while trying to fend off an alien invasion. When this book is good, it is good, but once the fighting starts it often gets average. It isn't that the fights are hard to follow, and it isn't that their unnecessary, but it feels like the book loses some momentum that is driven by its dialogue once the fight against the invasion begins.

This is soooo awesome!!!! The best part is when Captain America is bashing this alien into goo with his shield, after the alien tries to strangle Cap to get him to surrender. Cap points to the "A" on his forehead and yells, "Surrender? You think this A on my forehead stands for France?!?"

Take that Jacques!
