This book of poetry is written for Nursery/Primary readers.
Jack Prelutsky's book has dozens and dozens of fun, silly poems and includes outline drawing artwork by James Stevenson. The length of the poems makes for an easy read.
I liked the lighthearted nature of the poems and the silliness can be an asset, especially for children who don't like to sit and read. I think every child will recognize a little bit of themselves in at least one poem! The subjects vary, but there are lessons to be learn...more

Summary: This book is a collection of over 100 silly poems. With titles like "My Brother's Head Should Be Replaced" and "Baloney Belly Billy" these poems are short, easy to read, and funny.
Evaluation: I gave this book two out of five stars. I believe I was biased, having been a huge fan of Shel Silverstein as a child. To me, this book seemed like a cheap knockoff.

The New Kid on the Block by Jack Prelutsky is a book filled with poems that you would not imagine of. The book is filled with poems about jellyfish stew, a bouncing mouse, a boneless chicken, and a ridiculous dog. You’ll learn you shouldn’t argue with a shark, why you shouldn’t eat a dinosaur. Most importantly, we learn why you shouldn’t have an alligator as a pet. I thought the book could have had a lot more picture and definitely should have used color. The pictures were only sketches with bla...more
I read The New Kid on the Block by Jack Prelutsky.
SUMMARY: These poems are very outrageous and had subjects that would usually be impossible to come across. Some poems are as normal as "I Have an Itch" and others are as outrageous have characters like grumpp the garbage dump.
CRITIQUE: The images were very unique and fresh. There was an image to go along with each poem to build a child imagination on the humor the author was trying to portray. It also had a positive stretch. These poem focus on...more

I liked this book because it is a collection of various children's poems that are fun and silly. Some of the poems are entertaining and silly and some of them children could relate too. My two favorite poems in this book were Homework! Oh, Homework! and Bleezer's Ice Cream.
Homework! Oh, Homework! is my favorite poem in this book I like it because it is a silly poem listing all the things this kid would rather do than do their homework. For example; take a bath with a man eating shark.

The New Kid on the Block combines poems of one theme: a neighborhood, and delves so thoroughly into the theme that Prelutsky includes Bleezer’s Ice Cream Shop’s flavor list (all of which were hilariously disgusting to me as a child, especially when my mother would get her toungue tied by the alliterative rhymes- Checkerberry Cheddar Chew/ Chicken Cherry Honeydew (p.48)) My Mother Says I’m Sickening and An Alleycat with One Life Left. But that doesn’t keep Prelutsky from adding real character to...more

Another great poetry book from Prelutsky. His poems are cheeky and funny, ideally suited for the child reader. Whether the students are reading them or having them be read to them, there is a lot of enjoyment in his style of writing and poetry.
Using a book like this in lesson plans allows the student to really explore and dissect their world and put into a funny context. Students can write poems based on some of his poems, except using their own information about things to...more

The New Kid on the Block by Jack Prelutsky is another really great poetry book for children. I remember reading this book when I was a child and loving it. This book is a compilation of many poems in varying lengths. What is so wonderful about Jack Prelutsky’s poetry is that the poems really speak to young children. They are fun to read out loud, they flow really well, and they are also about really funny topics. I think that a lot of children would really enjoy reading his poems in this book. T...more

So…I don’t know. I remember thinking that to get through college I was going to suck it up and figure out how to enjoy poetry. And all of a sudden I loved it, I could see what the teachers finally were talking about. Sonnets, etc, amazing. And then there was this book. It’s not normally what I would ever pick up, and I had a hard time sloughing through some of these poems. Luckily these poems are simple, and even though they’re nonsense, t...more

"The New Kid on the Block" features more than 100 poems. Prelutsky really uses his imagination writing about things we've thought about and things we'd never even imagined. The poems open readers up to the world and minds of children. Poems about greedy grannies, exploding Bloders, and hypothetical situations such as having your nose unfortunately situated between your toes are guaranteed to have you chuckling. It's full of surprises and the sketches are quick and easy, but still shows the true...more
This book of poems were full of creative ideas that really did not have a theme except creativity and different! The book was fun to read, for example, there is a poem that all the lines look like you are reading them through a mirror. The title is I Am Your Mirror Image. It was hard to read but I think this book would appeal to children. I think that it would give the children motivation to write their own poems and realize that they can write about anything that they want to. This book reminde...more
Jack Prelutsky always knows how to write fun and exciting poetry that always grabs kids attention. I picked The New Kid on the Block because not only do I remember loving it as a kid, but children today who are in school love it as well! From poems about turning your face into an adventure, to multiple silly animal poems, he always knows just what to write about! I do think that this book could use a lot more illustrations, and they definitely should remake it in color. If you have a vivid imagi...more
The New Kid on the Block is a book of Prelutsky’s poems that introduce something new (things that you may have never thought about before). Two of Prelutsky’s best poems are in this book; "Today is Very Boring" about a child who wakes up and thinks everything about the day is boring and "The New Kid on the Block" a poem about a new kid who moves the city. This book of poems is great for all ages, but children ages 5-12 will enjoy the poems the most. Teachers could read the poems to their class w...more
Jack Prelutsky shines in his collection of humorous and imaginative poems in this book. Prelutsky introduces the craziest ideas and concepts like a boneless chicken, going to a dragon's birthday party, eating crazy ice cream flavors such as Tapioca Smoked Bologna. Kids will love the humor and laugh out-loud. Teachers can use this for all ages as a fun read-aloud, introducing styles of poetry, fluency practice, reading with expression, and performance practice. This book will help children fall i...more
I had to buy this for my niece after I found myself starting a poem from the book and not remembering how to finish it. Imagine that - it's been at least 16 years since I had this book, yet I could still recite stanzas at will. How frustrating it was not to have all of them!

When I opened this book up, The New Kid on the Block I had only read an I Can Read! It's Christmas! book with poems by Jack Prelutsky before. I knew that I enjoyed his poetry so I was curious what I would find in this book. After reading the first poem I had a smile on my face and I just had to call my dad to read it to him out loud. This is exactly the kind of thing he would have quoted to me during my childhood. The poems within these books are silly and really quite amusing. I did not realize...more

I grew up reading Shel Silverstein's books like Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic. I never tired of these amusing poems, and I would reread the books often. I've introduced our girls to these books, too, and we've all come to love the whimsical poems and the humorous illustrations. Our oldest received this book of poems as a present from her third-grade teacher and she loves them just as much.

Have you ever considered the advantages to having your nose on your face? Or what life is like for a boneless chicken? Or lamented a night of homework? Then this book is for you! Jack Prelutsky’s collection 107 poems are silly, catchy, and classic. Readers bounce from poem to poem, carried along by James Stevenson’s squiggly illustrations. Though this is a fast read, Prelutsky’s odd characters, like the Underwater Wibblies and Drumpp the Grump, will keep you giggling.

I bought this for my children and quickly realized, since I was so protective of it, that it was MY book! The first poem of the book is great and a hint of the fun to come! "Homework, oh homework, I hate you, you stink...." and my all-time favorite on page 149 (yes, I even have the page number memborized) "I am falling off a mountain, I am plummeting through space, you can see this does not please me by the frown upon my face..." Pure, unadulterated fun, highly recommended for all ages!
I wrote a review for this on Wednesday, but I don't see it on here. I'm not for sure what I did wrong. Hopefully this review shows up.
