I love baseball…baseball, baseball, baseball…….. I grew up watching and playing the game. I’ve been a fan for years, and so biographies of the players always interest me. Enter one Josh Hamilton.
I wasn’t really all that familiar with Josh’s story until I watched the Home Run Derby at the All Star game this summer. WOW, this guy was jacking them over the fence (and a few nearly out of Yankee Stadium) one by one. But that wasn’t what made this night so special, what made t...more

Inspirational story of a number 1 baseball draft pick who went off into the world of cocaine and crack, but made his way back into major league baseball. (In 2008, he set a record in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game in old Yankee Stadium.) Although it was really "written" by ESPN's Tim Keown, it reads very smoothly as if produced by one hand. An especially good read for anyone trying to break an addiction - of any kind.

Fantastic book! Inspiring story. As a Christian myself, I am inspired by Josh's unashamed stand for Jesus and his willingness to use the platform he's been given to spread the gospel. I am a huge baseball fan, but this is a good read for anyone!

When reading this book, the emotions I felt were disappointing, when he let down his parent by making wrong decisions. I was encouraged when Josh Hamilton finely chose to come clean from drugs. I kept reading this book to find out how and when Josh would get well enough to be able to play baseball again. The part of the book that got my attention the most is when he started to get tattoos to fill his loneliness. Another part of the book that got my attention was when Josh tried many times to...more

A fantastic book! Some parts were very painful to read [and I can only imagine how painful it was to write] but the book brought out all types of emotions and was written from the heart. He is an inspiration for anyone with any type of addictions and gives faith to someone who has a loved one that is addicted. He doesn't seem to have an answer for what caused his downward spiral, but I think [and I am certainly not a psychiatrist] he was too sheltered growing up and his life was all basebal...more

Autobiography of a talented professional baseball player's (seemingly rapid) decent to bottom-of-the-barrel alcohol/cocaine/crack addiction. After attending a Ranger's baseball game, where many fans wore shirts with his name, a friend loaned me this book to learn more about this Raleigh-area native's addiction struggle and apparent ongoing recovery with the help of his faith and family. The story has holes and seems somewhat non-linear, but I assume that is to protect the privacy of some and r...more

This book brought me back to the warmth of summer time and the crack of the bat and sitting in the awesome seats behind third base at the Rangers game this summer. I had heard of Josh Hamilton and his story from an article in Sports Illustrated and from the papers as he racked up RBIs during the 2008 season. His story is an interesting prodigal son story, but most important to that is his relationship with Jesus Christ. The beginning of Chapter 19 is key to understanding how he needed that re...more

I absolutely loved this book. There was so much about it that was inspiring. Anyone who loves baseball really should read this book. Anyone who is struggling with a major obstacle in their life could possibly benefit from reading the book as well. Josh Hamilton is a truly gifted baseball player and after reading all the things that he went through or put himself through, and ultimately overcame despite the long road it took to get there, he is a testament that anyone can rise above their cir...more

This book is AWESOME. I guess because it mirrors my life in every aspect EXCEPT baseball, I never played past litttle league. But the drugs and the pain this guy went through I can TOTALLY relate to. And at the end when he is forced to go back home b/c his wife eont le him in and he has no where else to turn, and there he finds God again, thats some REAL stuff right there.
I have just come out of a 10 year addiction to opiates, I tried tratment more times than I can count, tried cold tur...more

I did not know anything about Josh Hamilton before coming across the top 100 sports books on Amazon.com. I was suprised that one would want to read about this particular person. I looked up Josh Hamilton and his story blew me away. In short, Josh was a player of great caliber and was considered the next great player. Yet, after an injury, Josh went into drugs and alcohol which drained most of his assets. Yet, Josh was able to rebound by believing in his family and by keeping his faith str...more

I expected this book to be mediocre. I thought, when it came out at the end of the 2008 baseball season, that the publisher was just trying to capitalize on baseball's feel-good story of the year.

But even if that's true, it doesn't make the story less powerful.

Even though I like Josh Hamilton, I wasn't all that interested in reading this book. I already knew most of his story, so I figured the rest would just be fluff.

I started reading the book because I nee...more

I love baseball, but I have to admit that baseball autobiographies are often not the greatest, most well-written books. This one is different. The first part of the book was not so good, as Josh talks a lot about how great a player he was as a kid. So much so that I'm thinking, "Oh, no, another boring 'I'm thankful that the Lord made me such a great player' story." But once he gets into the truly harrowing tale of his slide into drug addiction, this become a can't-put-it down story o...more

Josh Hamilton's tell-all book of his addictions and the near loss of his marriage and professional baseball career is heart-wrenching and powerful. It's not the greatest memoir ever written but it doesn't need to be - Josh's story is for everyone to hear not just literary high-brows. The book reads as if Josh is sitting across from you in a coffee house, relaying the story of his poor choices and how they took nearly everything, and everyone that was important to him away. It's personal without ...more

Josh Hamilton's journey from being the most promising young ballplayer since Mickey Mantle to a strung out crack junkie on the verge of losing his family, his livlihood and his life is told with complete honesty. In arriving at the depths Josh was able finally to turn his life over to Christ, and in so doing, realize his life's dream. A very inspiring story and one that should resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with an addiction.

excellent book. A fantastic comeback story. Hamilton really does a credit to non-fiction in general with a fascinating and very real story. The book delves into religion, morals, hope while telling the story of his addiction to drugs
