If you look up a definition of cliché writing, this book would be one of the prime examples of it. It is as average as average gets.

First of all, I don’t read many crime novels but I have read enough to know what is original and what have been overused over time or beaten to death. Second, I have also watched a tons of movies that focus on crimes such as kidnapping (just as this book does) and I also know what is considered a good story and what passes as a weak attempt at story telling.

My father surprised me by picking up Speaking in Tongues when he was visiting me. I think he was attracted to the back cover copy about two men of words, one seeking peace and other seeking violence. Actually, considering the climax of the book, that cover copy is an oversimplification. Both men were seeking peace in their own way, but neither could agree with the other’s methodology. One character is a former psychiatrist and the other is a former prosecuting attorney, sometimes known as the “d ...more

Jeffrey Deaver certainly knows how to write suspenseful novels. I've enjoyed severslmof them, but this one was a bit too gruesome and the characters too weird for me. I didn't realize I was listening to an abridged version of the audio book, but I'm glad it was. Not my favorite of Deavers books to say the least!

Psychological thrillers is one of my favorite genres. This book is a classic example of why I love them so!
This was a great book about a seventeen year old girl who is kidnapped for reasons unknown, then the story unfolds. The pieces come together beautifully true to Jeffery Deaver style.

If you want a book full of cliches, stereotypes, and a storyline that can be seen for a mile away, then this is the book for you!

Originally published on my blog here in February 2007.

This is an early thriller from Jeffrey Deaver, revised four years after the original publication. Like most of his thrillers, it is fairly conventional in its plotting and background. Megan is the daughter of a moderately successful lawyer and his estranged wife; following an incident which suggests a suicide attempt to law enforcement, she is undergoing therapy when she is abducted by a psychopath looking for revenge. Her parents, intended t
Poco emozionante, troppo lungo e banale. Situazioni risolte inverosimilmente.

Thus book is what is getting me into thrillers, I loved everything about it, it wasnt to detailed, it was a page turner, it made me hold my breath, it left me speechless, it made me gasp and it is unforgettable. I definitely recommend this, if you want a psychological thriller.

Another quick read. First book I've read by this author. It's a really weird psycho thriller! A bit creepy, but I will read other books by him. Apparently he's a psychologist himself! I think one would have to be, to write something like this.

Deaver's skill at weaving a crafty and intriguing suspense story is sound. He has the bare bones of the work down to a science, and when it comes to most of his tales, the bones themselves are strong, hearty, and glistening white.

In this case, however, those bones have virtually no muscle.

This tale is about Tate Collier, his ex, Bett, and their kidnapped child, Megan. The villian for this tale, a slick-tongued psychiatrist named Aaron Matthews, is a man of such skill that he can talk virtually a

Speaking in Tongues. Jeffery Deaver. 1995. Simon & Schuster. 333 pages. ISBN 0684871262.

Speaking in Tongues is a stand-alone thriller by Jeffery Deaver, best known for his Lincoln Rhyme series. The novel is extremely fast-paced and I'll bet fans of Deaver and suspense alike will finish this book within a few hours of picking it up.

Megan McCall is a troubled teenager who visits a therapist on a regular basis. Estranged from both parents, Megan is still damaged by the divorce between her free-

The other two reviews of this book summarise it pretty well; an enjoyable and easy read, quick - very much a page turner - perhaps not quite as good as other Deaver works i've enjoyed. I truly wish I hadn't read The Cold Moon so recently, a lot of the character traits to our villain are reflected in The Watchmaker (Cold Moon). Having said that, it is after reading more and more Deaver I notice patterns in his writing - at least one of the peripheral detectives must be strongly linked to their Eu ...more

I've read quite a few of Deaver's thrillers - most of the Lincoln Rhyme and Kathryn Dances series, and several of the standalones. This is one of his earlier books, and while it has some of the trademarks - scary manipulation of innocents by the evil genius, twists in the action so you can never be sure who's really dead, the race for our hero to rescue the victim before it's too late as you realise you're running out of pages to wrap it all up... but this one didn't have much of the science of ...more

This novel (pub. 2000) is one of Deaver's non-series "thrillers", about a teenager Megan who is abducted, leading her divorced parents Tate and Bett to re-unite in a book-long effort to find her. The villain appears to be Megan's psychiatrist: although the relationships between all the principals remain cloudy until near the very end of the tale, the author manages to maintain only a modicum of suspense throughout.

We generally enjoy Deaver's work, and while this book was intriguing in parts, it

I remember Deaver from the Bone Collector. His writing skills is one of a talented writer. Although reading thrillers weren't really on my reading radar or so called booklist as you will, because I prefer to watch them than rather having to go through the bore of reading them lol...actually this book I picked up when I was cleaning out my old closet, full with dust and what not, and I was totally bored so I decided to give it a try. Bukunya om deaver yg pertama kali gw,mungkin thriller kali ya,yg bakal sangat epik kalo divisualisasikan.

Fast paced and wide-eyed edge of your seat scary as the bad guy is smart, manipulative and has a way with words.
Megan, daughter of Tate and Bett, is seventeen years old and in therapy after a drunken incident that looked like a potential suicide. Her parents are divorced and neither spends much time with her or seems particularly interested. On the day in which the book begins, Megan is seeing a substitute therapist. When she disappears after that appointment the police think she must be a runaw

Seventeen-year-old Megan McColl became a pivotal element in a plot to exact revenge on lawyer Tate Collier, her father. Calculating psychotherapist, Dr. Aaron Matthews cultivated his relationship with Megan, tweaking her mind, positioning her for a kidnapping –his first step to inflict unbearable pain on his true target.

Thirty-two short chapters, “Speaking in Tongues” opened with a gripping chapter, the suspense was heavy. Fast paced, actively intense, sadistic and violent, this thriller hit al

Exceptional storytelling; perfect psychological thriller. The story built up with so much anticipation and suspense that I thoroughly enjoyed every page. This was the first time I'd read a book by this author and no doubt I will be looking into several more.
My only small complaint was that I believe some of the character dynamic/ narrative were a bit hard to believe. The character of Megan left a little bit to be wondered- she has two personalities, but one is "Crazy Megan"? How long did "Crazy

Jeffery Deaver wrote the book, "Speaking in Tongues." This book was about a teenage girl named Megan McCall that went to a psychologist everyday to stay out of juvy. She was drinking one night and walked up a water tower and almost killed herself. The cops caught her but she plead insane so she had to see a psychologist. Her regular psychologist was gone because his mom had an accident. The one that filled in for him was Aaron Mathews. Megan told him everything about her then he drugged her. He ...more
I love Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series, but this is the first novel of his outside of the series that I've read. He is a compelling writer, with great pacing, and you really want to know what happens which keeps you rocketing through the book. However...there were some weird things in this that just didn't quite jive. Like how easily the main character was able to plant evidence and fool the police. I allowed it for the sake of the story, but it's the thing that bugs me while I'm thinking about it ...more
