I really enjoyed this book because it combined my love of baseball, mystery, and action into one book. The main boy,Josh, is this "baseball great" and his dad was one too. To reach his full potential, Josh's dad makes him play for an intense traveling team instead of his school team that all of his friends play for. Meanwhile, Josh's dad lost his job playing for a minor league team and needs the job with Rocky;s baseball team that his son is playing for. Josh has trouble making friends with his ne...more

Baseball Great by Tim Green is the book I have currently been reading. Josh is a kid who has tremendous talent to be seen by many. He's a baseball player who seems to have a lot of talent and potential in him. He is playing a his school in which one of his friends Jaden the school news reporter has seen him play and knows that Josh is so good he can really carry his team on his back as many superstars “pros” do. His dad has moved him schools which means he's now playing for a different team and...more

The realistic fiction book Baseball great by Tim Green is all about a boy named Josh who is thirteen years of age. His father plays triple A baseball in the minor leagues. However, one day he finds out that his father got cut from the team. Josh is on his school baseball team, he is a very talented player. His dad then pull him out of that team to play with higher skilled players rather than just the school team, so he gets placed on the Titants, a travel baseball team. This all prepares him for...more

As a sports fan, I always look for fiction involving sports. So when I happened across this book I thought I’d give it a shot.

Well, what can I say? The first thing I suppose I can mention is that I managed to guess certain parts of the plot about three-fourths of the way through. Although I will follow that up by saying that I was right and yet I was wrong. Which I found vastly entertaining and laughed at myself for thinking I was a darn know-it-all! *lol*

This was a great book. Normally I don’t...more

Josh is a pretty normal kid. His mom stays at home, but his dad is a totally different story. He was drafted to play in the M.L.B. That didn't happen so much. An injury stopped him from playing there so he got stuck in the minors. Josh, naturally, is in love with baseball, and he is always getting helpful hints from his wannabe-be-majors dad.

Time rolls around for baseball tryouts and Josh wants to play for his school. He's going to easily make the team when his just-cut dad drives up and takes h...more

“Lets go,” the umpire said to Josh.
Josh nodded and stepped up to the plate. He glanced at the loaded bases then at the two outs up on the scoreboard. The pitcher reared back and jerked sideways. His arm whipped around and came Josh’s way. Most people would see it like they’d see a snake flick its tongue, but Josh saw more. The ball left the pitcher’s hand with a perfect spin, a fastball to the outside edge of the plate.
Josh swung big, and connected with a crack.
The ball took off.”

This book was OK. I did not appreciate that it is an ICCA book. Those books are for 3rd through 6th grade. I still think they need to change that because this book would be OK for a 6th grader to read, but not a 3rd grader! Josh (the main character) gets on a U14 travel team even though he's only 12. Towards the end of the book his teammates offer him gym candy (steroids). He is a smart kid and never takes them, but the way he handles the situation is stupid. He refuses to contact the police and...more

The topic was good, and the plot was well introduced, but I would say it fizzled at the end. Green did such a good job of setting up the conflict that he ran out of steam to solve it at the end.

Overall I recommend this book for all junior high aged students, particularly boys. The characters are likeable and funny. The villain is a sleeze-ball, even the team chant is creepy, "Do it to it." Yuck.

The sports theme makes it likely that a junior high boy will enjoy the story and his problems.

Josh, a 7t grade student, is forced to deal with the pressures of taking steroids to be the baseball great his disheartened father wants him to be. Faced with financial hardship and the loss of his minor league job, Josh's father signs him up with Rocky Valentine's youth championship team, the Titans. Josh is disappointed as he'd really hoped to play for junior high school team. The Youth Championship Team is in a whole other league both skill-wise and strength-wise, but as Josh finds out, it's...more

Baseball Great is a book about Josh who plays baseball at his school. But one day his dad transferred him to a very intense traveling team. This team was a very good team full of big strong members. Unlike the team at the school, this team had extreme workouts on the field and in the gym. Josh wasn't welcomed at first but later he was accepted by some of the team members. Josh went to go meet up with some of the players at the traveling team. One of the guys he met up with gave him a pill. Josh...more

This was a great book about baseball. This book was about a boy named Josh who was put through a few troubles but still managed to play the great game of baseball. One of the problems he faces is that his coach is trying to give him steroids so he can have an extra edge to get a sponsorship by Nike. Josh and his friends help bring "Rocky," his coach to justice, and Josh's Dad gets to coach the team.
My favorite part of this book was when Josh gets to play with the 12 and under team. All his fri...more

The first baseball book I've read by Tim Green and I found it as reliable as his football books. He addresses some important issues(winning at all cost, unemployment, steroid use) in a way that makes them accessible to kids.

3 1/2 stars. I've read all of Tim Green's football books, and I like them very much, so I thought I'd give one of the baseball books a try. I listened to this one. It was read by the author and the audio was pretty good. Full disclosure here--NOT a baseball fan. SO not a baseball fan. But I usually like baseball books. And I really liked this one for the most part. Didn't like Josh's father, but that's okay--I can live with the jerk dad. I really hit a wall with the steroids, though. I just coul...more

My son read this and really liked it- he loves sports books and Tim Green writes the books he loves. I checked of three stars- but really would give it three and half+. It's fairly straightforward, though he plants a few 'unfinished' red-herrings-which keep the reader in suspense. Unless you write mysteries yourself, then you might make some near guesses. :) Baseball Great is suspenseful and raises questions that concern athletes, health and moral choices, and friendship dilemmas, which is why I...more

Personally, I loved this book mainly because I love baseball. Baseball is probably the thing I can relate to most because I train for it everyday, and love it! That is what most of this book is about so when it talked about all the adversity and effort it took I was really able to relate. If I had to choose one thing to change about this book, it would be the Super Stax. This was a "protein" the boy used to give him more endurancy when he lifted weights. Basically, they were steroids and he was...more

This has to be my favorite book. This book had everything like suspense, sports, and action. I am a huge sports fan and Tim Green definitely wrote this book for sports fanatics. My favorite part were the games because he described them so well.
Also there was one part where there was a major cliffhanger. On night I stayed up till 2a.m reading this book. The suspense part was so long and I couldn't put the book down until it was over. If you are want to read a great sports book I highly recommend...more

I would recommend this book to baseball players everywhere that could relate to those heated practices and hard work outs. Even if you don’t play baseball this is a good lesson for readers everywhere about how if you work hard enough you don’t need to use drugs or illegal substances to get better. This book shows how much kids are dedicated to their sports to get better by working every day in rough conditions and long hours. If you are a sports fan you definitely need to read this book about ho...more
