Yes, there are 400 recipes in here, all vegan, and they're divided into chapters that make sense. There is more than adequate information about vegan food and some about the vegan kitchen. The recipes look delicious and easy to make. And I do like this cookbook. But the negatives are that it isn't very attractive (there are no pictures and the text fonts/colors I find difficult to read easily), and it's very thick: would suggest before making a recipe to photocopy the needed pages because it is ...more
This was one of the first vegan cookbooks I ever bought. It looked big and pretty comprehensive. I thought it would help me to figure out what vegans eat and how to make ordinary meals without common dairy and egg products. What I discovered when I looked through it, was that vegans eat normal foods--veges and beans and grains--and that most of my life I've been pretty close to being vegan already. And I didn't think these recipes were necessarily the best examples I'd ever seen of "chili"...more
I first borrowed this book from a friend and my initial reaction was "oh - where are the pretty pictures?" Then, I actually read the intro (Vegan Basics) and made some of the recipes and I could honestly care less about the full page, full color pics that are usually in cookbooks. This book is so fantastic that you don't even need that! Why it is so great:
* Every recipe I've tried so far is fantastic, and we all know that sometimes vegan dishes can sometimes (I stress sometimes)...more

I bought this book online from some discount reseller and the cover is plastered on backwards and upside down. It messes with my head every time I pull it out. Fortunately, the recipes inside are amazing so I can overlook the cover mix-up. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be a cheapskate.
My hands-down favorite recipes is the Chocolate Pudding Parfaits. It's so simple but so decadent. Whoever thought tofu & soymilk could taste so good? My daughter gobbles this up thinking it's some g...more

This book has in general been a let down. Yes it is thick, but that means it doesn't stay open. Many of the recipes just have simple substitutions that you could make on your own from an omnivore cookbook (ie: egg replacer, vegan butter and soy milk). Really what it turns out to be is a soy cookbook. That is unfortunate as I try to avoid soy, when you are a vegan that is everyone's fall back so you eat a lot of soy making for an un-healthy not balanced diet. Although I am not currently vegan I h...more
Whoa, this is a yummy cookbook! And with so many fantastic recipes to choose from and accessible ingredients (most found in a well stocked grocery store), I think omnivores and vegetarians would like this one too. Here's what I've tried so far --
Artichoke and chickpea stew: This recipe had me at artichoke. Seriously though, it's so good and easy that we're making it again this week. Perfect for cool weather.
Thai-style coconut soup: Perfectly rich and creamy without being to...more

This is the best, most useful cookbook I have ever had. Whether you just want to learn more about eating and cooking vegan food or you've been doing it for years, get a copy of this book. One of the things I have enjoyed about being vegan is all the new kinds of food I have tried since "converting" a year ago. This cookbook shows you how to incorporate all kinds of foods into recipes inspired by international cooking. A good example is one of my favorites, the curried chickenless salad...more

Kind of pretentious, but definitely a good guide to being a healthy, well-fed vegan.
Recipes that I didn't get around to, but which sound delicious:
Asian Pear Tart with Toasted Almond Crust and Orange-Ginger Glaze (toasted almonds, dates, Asian pears, lemon juice, brown sugar, ginger, and orange marmalade...yummy!)
Pesto
(why is all pre-packaged pesto non-vegan?? it's just garlic, basil, pine nuts, and olive oil, really...)
Fresh Peach Crisp with...more

Simple, tasty and filling recipes. I can't cook. seriously, I can't cook at all. This book is so simple and easy to use that even I can use it.
The recipes are so yummy and I love the fact that they're from all over the world. The amount of recipes containing beans are so useful. Incorporating beans into my diet was my biggest hurdle. Now, using some of the stews, burgers or soups in this book, I find it easy to get my daily dose of beans.

I must be picking the wrong recipes out of this cookbook.
I have to say that I have given up on this behemoth because recipe after recipe is just...bland. The only exception is recipes that are spicy which will be insanely, almost unappetizingly, spicy (that or my chili powders are much, much hotter than the author's).
I would rather have a tightly edited book with a few truly delicious recipes than this.

Do not read when hungry.
Best recipe so far: vegan mayonnaise. Cheaper than real mayonnaise and definitely cheaper than the veganaise. And probably way better for you too. I like that it is filled with little tricks like that to make vegan life great. Like banana spread for bagels.

A favorite comprehensive vegan cookbook. I have made several recipes from this one--Three-Seed Lemon Tea Bread, Linguine and Oyster Mushrooms with Gremolata and Cumin-Scented Sesame Flatbread, to name a few. All were great--especially the pasta dish. Robertson writes easy and tasty vegan recipes.
There are a few recipes in this book that I come back to again and again - like the East Coast Chili, for one. Overall however, I found many of the recipes requiring ingredients I seldom have on hand. Not my favorite, but still a good one. And 400 is a lot of recipes.
Definitely a big book (400 recipes is quite a lot!) with lots of different options. In fact, it's almost overwhelming. My big complaint is that the book has no photos, but it really overcomes this with tantalizing descriptions and super yummy (sounding) meals.
This book contains a staggering amount of recipes from all over the world. They're split into handy sections to keep everything manageable, and most of the recipes call for easy to obtain ingredients, which makes this a wonderful basic cookbook.
Easy recipes. Some of the ingredients are not so healthy (white flour products, corn oil, peanut oil). However, this can easily be altered. The writing is smoth and easy to follow...which is nice for a cookbook. Good book for the working cook.
This cookbook is my vegan bible. My favorite thing about this book is that it brings a lot of multicultural food to the table. The Sweet Potato and Green Pea Samosas are to die for (when I'm in a hurry, I skip the dough and use a tortilla for the wrapper); the Asian Noodle Salad with Spicy Peanut Sauce is hearty and savory;and the Thai Papaya Salad is so good that it almost converts carnivores to veganism after one bite! I have only come across a couple of non-fabulous dishes (i.e. Cheesy Potato...more
This is an excelled vegan cookbook with an array of recipes from all over the globe. A few recipes that look particularily appetizing-"Thai-Style Leaf-Wrapped Appetizer Bites", "Jerk-Spiced Portobello Steaks","Layered Polenta Chili Casserole","Rustic Peasant Loaf with Black Olives and Sun-dried Tomatoes"...I could go on and on, and that is because there are 400 recipes to choose from! One of the greatest features of these recipes is that they are arrange...more
How can you say you've "read" a cookbook? I'm constantly in the process of "reading" them. I really like this cookbook as I grow increasingly intrigued by vegan cuisine. It has taught me how to have fun with meat substitutes!
I have no intention of going Vegetarian, much less Vegan. But this is my favorite book for vegetable recipes. The baba ganoush recipe alone is worth the price. You, too, can learn to love eggplant.
This is a fabulous cookbook. Everything I ever make from it turns out wonderfully and I am not even that good a cook. Robin Robertson is the only cookbook author I have ever written a fan letter to.

Loved this cookbook. Delicious, easy recipes. Fancy enough to serve at a dinner party, but easy enough to make for a weeknight meal. Exactly what I was looking for in a vegan cookbook.
Ok, this cookbook ended up surprising me. I was skeptical because of its bulkiness, odd chapter ordering and bizarre font (in my opinion) used for part of the book. However, the recipes in here are a home run. I have found the easiest way to get acquainted with it is to have a particular ingredient in mind and look in the glossary to see what recipes feature that ingredient. I have by no stretch of the imagination tried the majority of the recipes in here, but I feel confident giving it five...more
This is the cookbook I use most often. It offers a huge variety of possible recipes. Most other vegan cookbooks on my shelf call for too many substitutes or hard-to-find ingredients. This is definitely a do-able cookbook. My favorite recipes are the Whole-Grain Herb Bread, the Flax-Berry Pancakes, the Spiced Banana Pancakes, and the Pumpkin Pie Pancakes (I guess I have a thing for pancakes. Also, I'm just dying to try the Peach Crisp with Almond Butter Cream. Yum!
Great cookbook- manageable recipes that taste good... love the black bean & sweet potato enchiladas!
Many of the recipes in here are just incredibly bland. I like food that's more daring.
Every recipe I've tried from this book has been really good!
You can't go wrong with Robin Robertson...
my favorite cookbook!
My first vegan cookbook. <3
