Confession: I don't GET the cupcake obsession of the past few years. Cake is far and away my least favorite category of dessert (my favorite desserts? it'd be a tie between fruit crisp w/vanilla ice cream, tapioca pudding, and dark chocolate truffles, probably) and making it smaller and cuter doesn't do much for me. BUT...I liked "Vegan With a Vengeance," I've done lots of vegan baking, and I figured there's something to the hype around this book. I just bought it, and wow, I can't wai...more

sweet lord...I gifted this to myself as an end of school year/ran my first 5k/I'm really awesome present. For days I stared at the lovely, glossy pictures and dreamed, knowing that soon all these cupcakes would be mine. Much like you might stare at a Picasso in a museum before you steal it. Or you might stare at someone really pretty before you kidnap them. (Kidding!)
So I started off with the "Sexy Low-Fat Vanilla Cupcakes" because mama's got got some booty to work off and, besides,...more

This is without a doubt the best cookbook I own (and that's saying a lot). I bought this book when I was assigned the task of baking for my lactose-intolerant friend's birthday. I wanted to make her red velvet cake, her favorite, and needed to find a lactose-free version. I have to admit that even I, a formerly pretty die-hard vegetarian and very open-minded kind of girl, was pretty skeptical about how good vegan cupcakes would be. I expected dry, flavorless, nasty little things. Oh, how wr...more

With a title like that, how could I NOT buy this $10 book? I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I haven't actually tried any of the recipes yet, but that's likely to change in the next, oh, 4 hours or so.
So let's just get this straight: Vegan. Cupcakes. Vegan, meaning uses earth-friendly, unrefined, cholesterol free ingredients that are often very nutritious. Cupcakes, meaning I want to eat them. All the time.

Bakers and wannabes, vegan or not
Every recipe I've tried in this book is great.
Katie has tried more and they are even better.
Vegan Cupcakes can definitely be as good as non-vegan ones. That's not something that seems like it can be said about many other foods.
The pictures are also fabulous, most of the cookbooks I read have line drawings for illustrations, because they generally explain techniques better. But Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World is as much a cheerleader for the vegan lifestyle as it is a cookbo...more

I bought this book last year when my favorite cupcake blog (cupcakeblog.com) mentioned that she had contributed a recipe. Well, at that point, I got it from the library since I rarely purchase cookbooks without testing it first but I loved it so much that I ended up buying it. Now the vanilla cupcakes with chocolate frosting are my favorites and that includes non-vegan cupcakes. I love how moist these are and how creamy the frosting is. I find myself preferring these to cupcakes made with eg...more

This book is amazing and so much fun to read. All the recipes are vegan, but don't tell the eaters; they'll never know. Everyone loves these recipes: omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans. Vegans really appreciate them because most cupcakes call for animal products. Once the recipes in this book are sampled, it will be obvious that animal products are superfluous! A really enjoyable cookbook. I can't wait to make some of these with children/teens as it would make a terrific (and delicious) project!...more

This is one of the most amazing and diverse collections of cupcakes -- vegan or non -- in the world. Isa has really outdone herself, and she's figured out amazing recipes to help mimic the texture and flavor of all those items that tend to get dry and heavy when veganized (e.g. buttercream frosting). I've found this book has been so great in providing quality dessert options for friends -- it helps accommodate for so many different "restrictive" diets (be it religious, gluten-free, veg...more

Everything i have made with this cookbook has been awesome. Furthermore this book is so helpful with troubleshooting and tips for successful baking. It is clear that these ladies have baked many a cupcake.

Brilliant. Isa, I love you. I suppose I should make more of the recipes before writing a five-star review of this delicious little book, but--I'm not. Isa has earned her street cred with me. Case in point: cookies n cream cupcakes which my (non-vegan, mind you) husband loooooved and said tasted like "real cupcakes." Not to mention they were cute. the icing was so good I ate it without a cupcake. The chocolate cupcake is great; the vanilla buttercream icing is to die for.

I have never been able to make a good cupcake, until now! This book is a godsend. For my first vegan baking experience, I made the golden cupcakes with chocolate butter cream frosting. The cupcakes were extremely moist with a light vanilla flavor, and the frosting tasted like chocolate milk. It was a perfect combination!
I cannot wait to try these cupcakes:
Cookie and Cream
Carrot Cake
Gingerbread
Peanut Butter
Pineapple Right-Side-Up

Good book - full of ideas - but whoever edited it dropped the ball on thinking about what possible audiences might need. Like...1) I wish it had a vegan baking basics intro. There's hints and explanations of baking/chemistry as you go through the book but that doesn't really help the novice vegan baker. 2) Some of the recipes are tricky and should be rated as such. 3) Some of the ingredients are hard to find. A list of resources for readers who don't live in NYC where you can find practically an...more

I love this book! It has never failed me!
Three things I love about this book are:
1. That there is a cupcake to go with any type of cuisine -
(I served the rosewater-pistachio cupcakes to cap a Persian meal and the green tea cupcakes to end a sushi dinner).
2. That they take the time to explain everything you need to know about making your cupcakes turn out beautifully (from cooking times, to over-stirring, to the variations you might encounter using different ingredients).

This book consists of absolute aesthetic indulgence. The photos are unbelievable and the cupcake enthusiasm has me convinced that I'll be a connoisseur in no time.
Now it's just a matter of trying some of these recipes out...
Added after January 23rd: Not willing to dive right in, I tried the plain old run of the mill vanilla cupcakes, but with a lemon twist. And lemon icing. They were absolutely fucking incredible and my non-vegan guest was amazed. I topped them with lemon wedges dipped i...more

I, the sole vegan in an office full of vegan-skeptics, have become the designated office baker because of this book. The mexian hot chocolate cupcakes are amazing, as are the plain chocolate, the pumpkin chip (though the icing for those is weird) and the mint-chocolate, and the vegan buttercream is perfect. All of the recipes are fairly easy and I can manage them on just 2 square feet of counter space! You will need an electric mixer of some kind for some of the frostings (not all though), but e...more

OMG.
I had almost forgotten what a light and fluffy cupcake is like. Obviously I've been using the wrong recipes (although a nice dense chocolate chocolate chip cupcake is good now and then).
I've made 4 recipes from this book and they've all been phenomenal.
My favorite cupcake so far is the Cookies-n-Cream cupcake.
Holy chocolate!
Not only are the recipes great, but the book is a sweet little concoction with anecdotes, fun writing, and a smart layout.

This is a wonderful dessert cooking book, even if you eat things with faces! I really enjoyed playing with the ingredients. The recipes are easy to follow, but challenging enough to be interesting. The writing style is fun, relaxed and cute. It's one I checked out from the library and had to go out a buy after I had to return it. For those of you who know my "don't buy what you can borrow" stinginess, you know this means it's good!
ps- the chocolate mint with oreos is sooooo good!

This book is great for proving that being vegan can be totally delicious--every recipe I've tried from it so far has totally impressed the non-vegans I've fed them to! So far my favorites are the carrot, the cookies'n'cream, and the raspberry buttercream frosting (I made it with coconut cupcakes, which was awesome)--the only problem is that these are so good I just want to make them over and over again and thus haven't tried too many more recipes from the book!

Even my friends who hate veganism can't turn their noses at the killer cupcakes in this book. The peanut buttercream is to die for, and the Tiramisu cupcakes got me laid. Twice. The pineapple "right side up" cupcakes are unique and yummy, and the mint chocolate cupcakes reminded me of Girl Scout cookies. The cupcakes are light and fluffy, unlike many recipes for vegan baked goods which come out like balls of clay.
You will not be disappointed. Trust me.
