I am not a vegan. I'm not even a vegetarian. In my younger and food-snobbier days, I once pretentiously told my roommate that I did not believe in veganism. Nothing personal to all you vegans out there (some of my best friends are vegans, I swear!), I just like cheese. A LOT. In any case, Isa Chandra Moskowitz has written a book of vegan recipes that will now, I not ashamed to say, constitute the bulk of my diet. (Hey, I refuse to sacrifice tastiness and start forking over my money to the frozen...more

I love this book with all my heart. There is not one meal that I have made that hasn't been delicious; the fact that my incredibly carnivorous and generally unhealthy food devouring family is duly impressed with each new dish is amazing.
I appreciate the simple yet malleable nature of most of the recipes (well, the ones I've tried!). A vegan due to a variety of food related health issues, I also have to keep my foods gluten free, and do my best to keep them low-fat. It's incredibly easy wit...more

This is a fun book that I'm not reading so much as using in the kitchen. I borrowed it from the library because I wanted to check out the recipes and try some before buying. I think I'll probably end up buying it. I'll update this review when I cook new recipes from it.
Veggie Burgers p. 101
These were really tasty and hearty, but I think I left the mix a little too wet before pan-frying them. The recipe notes say that these burgers "don't fall apart," but mine were a little mushy....more

I've finally tried three recipes from this cookbook. My difficulty wasn't that none of the recipes appealed to me, but that one appealed far too much! I kept making the Brooklyn pad thai over and over again -- that's got to be a good sign.
Beyond the pad thai, I've now made the diner-style pancakes and the pumpkin oatmeal cookies, and I've been pleased with how all three turned out. I did have to modify the pad thai recipe somewhat -- leaving out the onion since it calls for scallions too and...more

So I am not actually a vegan ... or even a vegetarian ... but I bought this book because one of my really good friends is a vegan and I wanted to be able to cook for her when she came over. I really like the fun tone of this book, and it is full of great tid-bits of information - like a whole page of different things that you can substitute for eggs. I also like that the author is really up-front that vegan doesn't necessarily mean healthy and that not everything vegan needs to be whole-grain,...more

I really love this book, and I'm always amazed by how Isa can make really basic foods taste sooo good with such a perfect texture and flavor. This is my favorite cookbook to whip out if I want to make something particularly fancy or special. That said, many of these recipes take hours -- sometimes days -- of prep time. I remember cooking for a potluck and having it take nearly 2 hours (and I was fortunate to have had a fully stocked spice rack and fresh veggies already in my fridge!). Some of th...more

A lot of the issues I had with "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World" are present here. I bought these two books as a novice kitchen vegan and expected more of an introduction to vegan cooking than was given. I have a lot of "specialty" cookbooks, some by the same authors, and although the book may be the 2nd or 3rd in a series, the editor never assumes the reader already knows everything from previous editions. Intro material is always included in each edition, sometimes edite...more

As much as I love the PPK, the main course recipes in this cookbook are not exactly ideal for someone who doesn't have a lot of time or a big budget. The different tofu marinades and crusts alone call for way more ingredients and time than I can afford. The few main courses I have tried are good, though (albeit rich). My favorite is the green curry (although I use curry paste from the store). The highlight of the book are the baked goods. I am not much of a baker, but I have tried a number ...more

Isa's writing helped me work out what I had preceived as dissonance between the counter-cultural idealism of my youth and the responsible adultness necessary to have a family and be married to a pastor. She calls it being "post-punk." I thought I had just gotten boring. But I'm over the hump now. I've been learning over the last few years that it is possible to be radical (okay, I'll say it one more time. . . and idealistic) and discontent with the state of the world in the process...more

Solid and fun. This small treasure trove of ideas for vegan cuisine was the first such cookbook I purchased and it remains close to my heart. There isn't, however, a hell of a lot in here. If you're like me, you like a cookbook to function as a monolithic compendium of all things gastronomical--thankfully she has gone ahead and published the Veganomicon, which I plan to purchase--and this just doesn't cut the Veganrella in terms of comprehensiveness. BUT for someone who is merely dabbling wi...more

I liked this- it wasn't like most vegan cookbooks where it's all about vegetables. Dont' get me wrong, I like vegetables, but I would also like to make a main dish occasionally that's not the standard stir fry or spaghetti. And this was great for that, but it was not exactly reasonable for my lifestyle.
Listen, I have flour and sugar in my pantry- I really can't start buying cornmeal, tabouleh, and bulghur just to make one meal. Let's be reasonable, shall we?

I finally got this last week! I LOVE IT! Isa is freakin AMAZING, she writes like how I talk (but not like how I think. How I think is much more Jane Austen.) and this has ot be the most exciting, inspiring cookbook I've ever laid my feasty little eyes and hands on. I would put it straight into my belly but then I couldn't make things like....coconut pancakes with pineapple sauce. Or Butternut squash vindaloo. Or pomegranate tofu and coconut rice and summer rolls and fauxstess cupcakes and and an...more

If I ever find this at Half-Price Books, I’m buying it. If you love me and you ever find it at Half-Price Books, please buy me a copy and I’ll pay you back for it. Of course, it’s a moot point because anyone smart enough to buy this book is too smart to get rid of it. I LOVE this book!!!! It’s got some incredible-looking recipes, so I plan to write down a couple of my favourites before I take the book back to the library. Isa Moskowitz is the founder of the Post Punk Kitchen, and also wr...more

I received this last year for xxx-mas from melissa. (yeah?) Seriously, Isa does a good job about telling a story and making it interesting, but her flavor profiles are off. I KNOW that being a good cook doesn't mean following a recipe, but sometimes when it says "This is really good and yadda yadda" in the book and on the web site I trust too much. So... with a grain of salt (literally TASTE everything you make in a small batch before you commit to ANYTHING in this book) I enjoy this b...more

Like so many farmland expatriates, I'm burdened by a love/hate relationship with dairy. Love the flavor, hate the phlegm. Love the texture, hate the messy cow-ness of it all. So this book's section on dairy replacements (bananas for eggs, peanut butter for butter, etc) is indispensable for adventurous bakers like myself. I'm also a lover of --and by that I mean I'm intimate with--many of the entree recipes in this book, and have thrown several successful soirees with a steaming vat of Isa's ...more

Ok, well, I'm not quite reading this, since it's a cookbook, but I'm currently in the process of testing the recipes. If my previous cookbooks are any indication, the testing will take years... Emily currently owns the fruits of my first vegan cookbook testing adventure.
So far, Vegan with a Vengeance has been a pretty nice experience. The recipes I've tried have gone over brilliantly, and there's a lot of innovation in Isa's cooking. The Fronch toast is out of control. Seriously, it's awesome...more

As a professed hater of vegetables, it's nothing short of amazing that I even picked up a vegan cookbook, let alone gave it 5 stars. I don't consider myself a vegan, in fact, I love meat. But I do hate tortured animals and chemical additives, so I thought I'd give it a try. I've made about 8 of these recipes and each one has turned out divine. What do I mean by divine? Suffice it to say that my fiance is usually considered the best cook in the house, but after cooking those last 8 recipes, he qu...more

VWAV was my first vegan cookbook and will probably stay # 1 forever.
At first, the ingredient lists may seem a bit long, as well as the directions, but it's mainly because the book relies on spices a lot (which is a good thing, in my book!).
I've made about 80% of the recipes and all of them were good and most of them have become dishes I cook frequently.
The only critism I have is that there is bit too much sweet stuff in there, in my opinion. I know that's what a lot of people love th...more

Anyone who loves food.
Though not vegan, I cook that way most of the time. Unfortunately, many run-of-the-mill vegan cookbooks have you using gobs of veg margarine or just don't expect much of your spice rack or fridge. Not so with Vengeance. Isa loves food, loves cooking. While her recipes inevitably lead to good meals, she also doesn't expect that you'll take her word for it when it comes to knowing what you like and how to cook it. She shares and inspires, then insists that you take the spatula in yer own mi...more

Amazing book, lots of tips on how to cook vegetarian, "make your own..." (hummus, fake bacon, veggie burgers, etc.) - basically all the stuff you can buy at Trader Joe's but buy pre-packaged - no dissing TJs either but it's just yummier when you do it yourself! Ingredients such as Braggs, TVP, and NIF (nutritional yeast) take me back to my co-op days. Also me and Giovanni are really getting into cooking together - he likes helping, and I like finding things with vegetables that he'll...more
