An elderly friend of mine lent me this - not a book I would normally have selected to read. And I haven't read anything by Stirling before. For my friend's sake I got down to reading it quickly and to my surprise I found it an enjoyable tale. Somewhat in the style of Georgette Heyer meets Lewis Grassic Gibbon. Lots of Scottish detail - especially about old Edinburgh - make it evocative of a bygone era. Light, entertaining and easily finished.
