This talks about girl's relationships with guys. In the first chapter, it talks about a boy Raheem. The narrator describes how she wanted to fit in and not be like the other girls, who are to referred to as, "girls with no boyfriends". Raheem treated her like junk, and yet the girl still pretend she doesnt see anything. Even when he flirts with other girls, she sees it, but she asks herself, "What am i without him"? I think that in that situation, the narrator feels like she ...more

Presented in a series of short stories, Who Am I Without Him? is a collection of musings on the role of men in women’s life. Some stories are sweet, like the letter a father writes to his daughter, while others are scary and sad. We see women who let men walk all over them, women who are strong and require their men treat them well, men who are good to their girlfriends and men who aren’t. Each chapter takes a slightly different view of the male-female relationship, and some are presented...more

This book contains a series of short stories about the relationship between boys and girls, relation with friends or family. These stories are all talking about how these teenagers are in a certain situation and their way of treating and solving the issues.
- One of the stories that I remember the most is this girl who tries to lie to herself to stay with her boyfriend, even though she knows that her boyfriend still has other girlfriends. She is acting very silly. She should have broken up...more

I just finished reading the book Who am I without him? A Short Story Collection about Girls and Boys in Their Lives by Sharon G Flake and I think this book was really interesting. It is a bunch of short stories that explain the relationships between boys and girls.
What surprised me about this book was the way the book was structured. It involves some short stories that create a whole story through journal entries. I found it to be very interesting and it really grabbed my attention. What I l...more

This collection of short stories addresses issues teenagers face in a very real way. I looked over the Table of Contents before I began to read and wondered which story I'd like the most. After reading "Jacobs' Rules", which teaches a very important lesson about relationships, I thought I found it. But "A Letter to My Daughter" turned out to be my favorite. It took a lot of courage for Alicia's absentee father to write this letter; teaching her about boys, and, more important...more

A fantastic collection of stories, each with a distinctive and authentic voice, about the life, times, and loves of inner city teens. The stories are about the big issues of urban life, but the joys in the stories reside in the small details. There's hope here, but there's also heartbreak as Flake shows young men and women coming of age. The three best stories ("So I Ain't No Good Girl", "I Like White Boy" and "Hunting for Boys") focus on girls trying to figure out ...more

Honestly, every time I see someone who says they loved this book I get a little pissed off. This is not a a great work of literature, this is not something that accurately portrays African-American teens to the world, this isn't even a book you can enjoy for the authors great style of writing. This book has done so well because so many black girls have read it and said, "Oh yeah I can relate to this!" when they don't know that there are better things to read and relate to then a drama...more

A collection of short stories about teenagers trying to figure out how love works. There were a few characters that I'd be tempted to beat with my shoe if I ever met them on the street, but overall, the voices were realistic and this will appeal to teens, especially girls. Several of the stories made me laugh and others left me feeling depressed. My favorite story was "A Letter to My Daughter," a letter from an absent father to the daughter he's never met.

this book is really nice for teenagers. it will give you understanding about relationships and experience people went through. this is a short story book. so there are many different stories but in all they are good. the themes they deal with are love, respect, trust, and peer pressure. i recommend this book to anyone who lacks experiences in these themes of modern day life.

this book contains short stories of relationships between boys and girls. sometimes reading short stories can be relaxing because you get to finish a story quickly and move on to the next one. Some stories had lessons that we can learn from, and to get to know what others would feel in that particular situation.
