For a review of TLOR in general read my review of The Silmarillion. These are some additional thoughts on issues taht come up on the books.
On page 277 Tolkien recounts the reforging of Narsil, Aragorn’s sword, which he renames Andruil, Flame of the West. The sword is made by elvish smiths who alone have the skill to remake the sword and pour into it the magic that it needs to accomplish its mission. Elvish swords are mentioned throughout the book as being imbued with special ...more

I consider the Lord of the Rings trilogy the best fantasy, and perhaps the best fiction, ever written. Middle Earth is a beautiful, rich, complete land to which Narnia pales by comparison (don't get me wrong, I very much like Narnia, too).

The continuation of the quest, with the Fellowship dissolved in betrayal, begins to show just how important the destruction of the One Ring is to all of Middle Earth. The infinite sorrow embedded in the land over the ages of conflict and fading beauty is ...more

"Gimli! Get me more arrows!!!" Thus continues the second book of the Lord of The Ring Trilogy. Like the first one this book is filled with high adventure, deception, and suspense.

The Fellowship has been scattered and three new journeys begin for our band of merry folk. Sam and Frodo begin a quasi-homo erotic jaunt through the land of Mordor with their tricksy companion Gollum. Pippin and Merry help 60 foot talking trees shatter the power of the White Wizard Saruman. And Arago...more

Everyone always talks about sophomore albums having a ton to live up to. I feel that way about most Book 2's in trilogies. Reading TTT yet again reminded me what a subtle, textured, wonderfully paced novel it is in and of itself. This is something I think we forget because the movie version of TTT was by far the least successful - mainly because Jackson et al took too many liberties and changed the original storyline to make the film flow better.

TTT develops some of the most wonderful, co...more

I like "Fellowship" much better than this. Where "Fellowship" was lyrical and mysterious, I find "Two Towers" to be cumbersome and boring in much of its detail. But I know there's something here that many people love. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh brought so much out of this part of "The Lord of the Rings", so I know there's something here and I'm left wondering whether I'm missing something, whether I'm not in the right mind when I'm reading it, or if I...more

In this sequel, Frodo and Sam seperates from the main party of the fellowship in order to avoid conflict the ring cast and to continue their quest. After Boromir dies, the remaining members of the party Aragon, Legolas and Gimli set out on a journey to find the two remaining hobbits that were captured by orcs. There is a two part storyline in which the the hobbits try to find a way to Mordor in addition to taming Smergol a creature that was once a hobbit, but corrupted by the powers of the ...more

Coming hot on the heels of the fantastic first book, Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers ups the ante with all the critical 'in between' drama that is required of that center section of all good tales.

We meet new and important characters, we see conflict increase and lots and lots of fighting and action! The vocabulary and descriptions were unlike any I'd encountered especially in the areas of battle.

We learn more to stand up and endure against evil in this book and are pleased to se...more

When I started this, the second book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I expected the story to lag, as so often happens in the middle of trilogies. (I had read it before, back when I was young and couldn't appreciate quality when I read it. I had forgotten most of the book.) The tale contained the further adventures of the Fellowship of the Ring--the comrades of Frodo Baggins who are helping him in his mission. In this book the Fellowship has had to split up and each group faces their own...more

The sage gets better and better! This one (like the Fellowship) was divided into two books. But Book 3 (the first book of Two Towers) focused only on the remaining fellowship: Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf and their adventures with the king of Rohan, the battle for Helm's Deep, etc. (which by the way was an awesome chapter!) Then Book 4 (second book of Two Towers) focused only on Frodo and Sam and their journey with Gollum. Gollum is pretty funny in and pathetic way. (The movie depicted him v...more

The Fellowship of the Ring has been fragmented. Both Gandalf and Boromir have been killed, Orcs have taken Merry and Pippen prisoner with Aragon, Legolas, and Gimli in hot pursuit while Frodo and Sam continue their journey to Mordor to destroy the One Ring. Not only does this book see the biggest battle yet against Saruman's army in Helm's Deep, but Frodo and Sam find themselves allied with the very creature who has been trying to take the ring from them... Gollum. The action in this second nove...more

After How to Eat Fried Worms and a few select Roald Dahl stories the Trilogy was my introduction into reading to get away.

In retrospect I don't know what I wanted to get away from when I was 10 but to date I have nostalgic and realistic childhood memories that are mish mashed between things that happend to me and things that happened in these novels.

I loved the movies, as I think most fans of the books did, but it is somewhat unfortunate that our children and childrens children won't g...more

This is the second in the Lord of the Rings series, and I just finished reading it. Quite a good book with an excellent plot and a great character set. I really think that the juxtoposition of Gollum and Samwise was a great idea. (If that was confusing, I'm sorry, but Google exists for a reason.) The reason that i only gave this book three stars is because J.R.R. Tolkien uses a lot of ink describing the scenes in more detail than you think possible. Eventually it gets boring and you want to ...more

It's difficult now to separate the books from the movies now sometimes - at least in terms of what part of the story is in the book and what part is in the movie, since PJ, Fran & Phillipa moved some things around a bit. However, as in most middle sequels this one drags the most for me. In fact, when I tried reading the trilogy back in my teens this is the book where I got hung up and couldn't finish because the battles bored me. I'm a little more patient now and understand the necessity ...more

I was talked into reading The Lord of the Rings by my husband. I'm not a die-hard fantasy person and these seemed more geared towards the die-hard.

Yes, as pointed out by my husband and my sister-in-law, Tolkien created many of the fantasy archetypes.

So now I have an understanding of where certain fantasy archetypes came from and had a chance to read the books before the movies came out, but I'm still not a die-hard Tolkien head.

I think I could pick the books up and read them again...more

This is the second part of the Lord of the Rings. In this book, the Company of the Ring is divided into 2 and 3 groups throughout the whole time. This allows them to have various different experiences and adventures. It is also in this book that Tolkien's 'higher' writing style comes to be used more. Much of the first and last part of the books, 'narrated' by hobbits, is more comic and rustic, whereas in other sections, particularly those concerning Aragorn, Tolkien has a higher, archaic, al...more

It may be in my best-books-ever shelf but it is probably the most boring one on the BBES. So . . .

Now that that's out of the way, I can get to business. I didn't mean to put J.R.R. Tolkien down when I said that, he is without a doubt a genius in terms of writing. But some things seem to stretch on and on. Especially the part when they get to the tower after it's been destroyed. I read it once when I was young but I had just kind of plowed through without absorbing half of it. So when I we...more
