This is another one that I read as a teen and although it's not frightening it does have a certain creepiness to it that's kept me coming back to my tattered paperback cope over and over again.

The basic rundown is this: Young brother and sister duo are children of a family practitioner who happens to own an extremely realistic rubber man which he uses in his office to use as an educational aid with his patients.

The doctor has passably good ventriloquist skills and talks to the children about bod...more

Though there have been several films made from Andrew Neiderman novels, I had never before been interested in reading any of his stuff. Until I randomly stumbled upon what should have been an 80's classic, but is sadly little known--Pin, starring Terry O'Quinn of Lost fame. After watching that movie in the middle of a sleepless night, and falling absolutely in love with it because it was so fucking weird, I decided that I must read the novel it originated from. It was of course quite different f...more

I watched the film adaptation of this when I was in my early teens but it was so creepy that it always stayed with me - perhaps also because Brad Dourif played the role of Leon and since One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest I'd always found his acting quite compelling. I was surprised to discover, only recently, that the film had actually been based on a novel so was keen to read it. One couldn't really put it in the horror genre and it's not at all gruesome but, like the film, there is something und...more

Probably the most effective genre page-turner I've ever read. While not exactly horror, it's creepier elements induce plenty of squirming. After reading, I looked up author, Neiderman, and found that he became V.C. Andrews' ghost writer after she died. They had been friends. This makes sense after reading "Pin," whose trashy trappings -- incest, family secrets, insanity, perversion, etc. -- all make the book read like the best V.C. Andrews novel she never wrote. Slightly stilted dialogue actuall...more

Pulpy pleasure reminiscent of those incestuous gothics by V.C. Andrews. This dime-store paperback (complete with creepy cover) mixes the Freudian perversity of Robert Bloch's original "Psycho" with the depraved ventriloquism of William Goldman's "Magic," making for a Hansel-and-Gretal-gone-bad story. Out of print and practically impossible to find, you'd have better luck watching the early 90's film adaptation streaming on Netlfix right now.

Young Leon and Ursula had little except each other. Mother was driven by a psychotic need to clean—constantly—everything in sight. Father was consumed by his medical practice and an analytical approach to life. But he understood the sensual hunger growing inside his children’s young bodies. He knew they could help each other answer, “The Need.” Father had Science. Father had Reason. And he had Pin. Pin who answered all the children’s questions in a voice not unlike the doctor’s. Father’s clever...more

I read this because there was an ad for it in one of those silly V.C. Andrews books. They were friends, and when she knew she was dying she asked him to ghost-write her further publications, so this guy is the one producing her new books today. ANyway, this book is a nasty bit of fun. I read it at 14 and it took me a while to realize the depth of Leon's madness. I think the best part is where he blames his beloved plastic replacement for a father for all his misdeeds. I think this author, like m...more

I love the 1989 cult-classic film based on this book (starring David Hewlett, Cynthia Preston and Terry O'Quinn). I haven't actually read the book itself, but it holds a proud spot on my shelves based on its connection to the film alone.

Have you seen Leon lately? I miss him a great deal. :D

Black humor, suspense, madness, and a "talking" mannequin. This is definitely one the strangest books I've ever read!!
This book is out of print and the movie never made it to DVD. Luckily I found the paperback at a garage sale for a quarter and I'm still hunting for the VHS.

This is the weirdest book I've read in a while. I loved every single page of it! Great writing style, good storyline, true creepiness! I cannot be sure that the events of the book apply to the "rules" of psychology but I don't really care about that. It is a very interesting book as it is. The story evolves around a sick family. A mother that cares about nothing but cleaning. A father so cold he never even speaks to his children. At least not in person. Not directly. He has Pin for that. The chi...more

While I don't really consider Neiderman to be a particularly stylistic writer, his mind creeps me out. PIN is likely his most creepy and disturbing work that I've come across yet..

Dis. Turb. Ing. A coworker gave this to me, I think to "test" my interest in ... offbeat ... squirm-inducing ... quasi-horror. Though it had far less traditional terror than I expected, the brother-sister-lifesize dummy relationship at the heart of the book ... well, my first three words summed that up.

the cover of this book made the story seem cheesy until i read it. pretty good, very easy read. soon to be made into a movie with terry o'quinn so read the book first!

...have seen the movie countless times...have yet to run across the book though...

And now I'll have to watch the movie adaptation because I'm hoping it's just as bizarre and twisty.

This book wasn't all that great, but it was better than the movie. It's long out of print, but when I got a copy from Amazon Sellers, I remembered seeing the cover and looking at this book in a store at least once. It was a fun read anyway.

This has nothing to do with anything, but the book had that kind of musty used bookstore, garage sale sort of smell. Which sounds icky but isn;t. :-D

Odd psychological book. Read it as a young teen, and in hindsight, not sure what captured my interest in it. The main characters are two young teens as well, so I think that had something to do with it, but as I think back, some of the story was messed up....
Tanya
This one is really creepy. It's told from the son's perception, but I kept imagining how his sister saw it.
Anna
Did Ursula actually destroy Leon, or was it really and truly Pin?
Chris
Creepy and quirky, just the way I like 'em.
