Hilarious! I've read many books by Gerald Durrell, several of which involve his animal-collecting trips all over the world to obtain creatures for his small zoo in the Channel Islands. This book covers a 6-month collecting trip in Cameroon and his tongue-in-cheek descriptions of his adventures and MISadventures with animals is delightful and had me laughing out loud. I had to google several of the animals having never heard of such creatures as water chevrotains and bushbabies.

I read this as a child and was enchanted by the funny animal stories. So, I ordered it for Calum for Christmas. It is still an interesting book, but sadly the 30 years since I last read it have dated it dreadfully. Chris and I visited Cameroon and visited some of the places mentioned in the book, so it was interesting from that point of view. I'd still recommend it, and Calum enjoyed it, but it's not the book I remembered!

This is a poorly written book, and the language has tons of tribal slang so this can be challenging to read out loud. I have had to sensor much from this story while reading it to my children, who are interested to find out what wild animal is found next. I would not recommend this book.

Enough good things can't be said about Gerald Durrell and his amazing (true) animal stories. Touching, clever, interesting, very witty and thoroughly compelling. I have seven of his books already, and my collection is steadily growing.
Highly recommended.

just another animal related travel story from Durrell, not really unique but still carrying his light and humorous, off-the-cuff style that makes all his books a pleasure to read.
